This is confusing.... While I was there I heard Obama after the 2nd day declare KY as a federal disaster area and the Governor is the one that asked and then stated on Local news that Obama had acted quickly.

This article does not make sense but I may have been in a Bourbon induced stupor trying to keep warm. Needs more research to verify and I was thinking that was pretty fast for the Feds to do when they did not know what was the true extent.

I am not Defending the King but this does not ring correct form what I was listening to in Louisville.

Comparing the ice storms in KY to hurricane Katrina is a joke. The Commonwealth of Kentucky should be prepared to handle situations like this without help from Washington. The primary job is restoring the power and that is done the local power companies with assistance from power companies from other areas/states not the Guberment.

President Obama late Wednesday evening declared Arkansas and Kentucky as federal disaster zones following severe storms, the first time he has issued such a declaration.

The White House announced after 11 p.m. that Mr. Obama spoke with Gov. Mike Beebe of Arkansas and Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear to get updates on the recent winter storms and to learn the status of their emergency response efforts.

Mr. Obama told the governors he would approve their requests for federal aid, and signed the two declarations following the phone calls.

The White House did not say how much aid was authorized.

It is the first time the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency has been mobilized since Mr. Obama became president and the first actions for new Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

The White House said citizens seeking more information should call FEMA at (202) 646-4600.

You are so right. The only thing that was needed was really funding to cover the NG and handle some extra resources to get things back up and running.
5 states sent hundreds of Power and Light crews as far as FL to Kentucky and they worked 18+ hrs a day to get things back to normal. I applaud their work.

Not to claim our's have been as bad as Katrina but every now and again NC gets a good smack from a Hurricane.

The Gov, whoever he may be, gets on the local TV and warns everybody that if they try and stick it out that they are on their own for a few days. Seems to work well enough for the majority of folks here.

I assume the new Female Gov will say much the same when the next one comes ashore.

The small Black town on the east side of the Tar River from Tarboro.

The whole town was underwater to the ceilings. Homes way out into the country were flooded.

Made the local news and that was about it.

Thousands and Thousands of homes and towns along the rivers of NC east of I-95 were flooded. Whites, Blacks, Indians, Mexicans and who knows what else - all flooded out but they got by. Plain country folks doing what they had to to get by.

This was not your average ice storm here. 2/3 of the state lost power and 157k still do not inculding me.

FEMA showed up with generators too small and salmonella tainted mres. Thanks alot.

The gov has still not asked FEMA for individual assistance yet. Steve needs to get off his ass on that or he will not get a warm welcome when he comes home.

With FEMA comes FEMA stupidity. Hell there are enough trailers there and we do not need any more, especially ones that are toxic. KY only needs the funds and they can fix their selfs.......
