Excellant read and I'll make sure my kids read this. I spent a week in Malta a few yrs back, it's a spectatcular place but I wish I would have known more of it's history.

Thanks

Interesting Read

Thanks for the post. The article pointed out an interesting piece of history while outlining what could be considered a lack of historical awareness in modern American society.

One could attribute some of the current choices made by the American public as suggestive of a lack of awareness of our own history and culture. In today's mainstream culture it is not difficult to find examples indicative of a lack of understanding of our own past as a country. The example used by the author of Jay Leno's skit "Jaywalking" is but one of many all too common instances of a generation not simply uneducated on its own past but also disinterested in it. It is unfortunate that so many know so little of where we've been. I would personally like to see more emphasis but on our history and common identity as a nation.

This was an exceptional post. Thank you Pete.
It is disgusting how little people know about history, or even about the "war on terror". I wonder how many people even realize how far back America's involvement in it goes. It is much further back than 9/11.
I don't know, I think that one of the military branches has something about it in a song.

Great Siege of Malta

Great Post!
I happen to live here on the beautiful island of Malta (for the past 5 years) and my wife is Maltese. They are a great people of unshakeable Christian faith. Every summer there are numerous feasts called Festas in each village to celebrate their villages' respective saints. Each village tries to outdo each other with fireworks diplays throughout the day and night supposedly in honor of the Great Siege of 1565. The island, although only about the size of a large county has a deep history. Another piece of Maltese history most people are unaware of is that supposedly more bombs were dropped on this tiny island during WWII than any other country involved in the war including Britain & Germany!
