Why I carry a gun

Why I carry a gun.....

My old great grandpa said to me son,' there comes a time in every mans life when he stops bustin' knuckles and starts bustin' caps and usually it's when he becomes too old to take an ass whoopin'.

I don't carry a gun to kill people.
I carry a gun to keep from being killed.

I don't carry a gun to scare people.
I carry a gun because sometimes this world can be a scary place.

I don't carry a gun because I'm paranoid.
I carry a gun because there are real threats in the world.

I don't carry a gun because I'm evil.
I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the world.

I don't carry a gun because I hate the government.
I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of government.

I don't carry a gun because I'm angry.
I carry a gun so that I don't have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be prepared.

I don't carry a gun because I want to shoot someone.
I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed, and not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.

I don't carry a gun because I'm a cowboy.
I carry a gun because, when I die and go to heaven, I want to be a cowboy.

I don't carry a gun to make me feel like a man.
I carry a gun because men know how to take care of themselves and the ones they love.

I don't carry a gun because I feel inadequate.
I carry a gun because unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am inadequate.

I don't carry a gun because I love it.
I carry a gun because I love life and the people who make it meaningful to me.

Police Protection is an oxymoron. Free citizens must protect themselves. Police do not protect you from crime, they usually just investigate the crime after it happens and then call someone in to clean up the mess.

Personally, I carry a gun because I'm too young to die and too old to take an ass whoopin'.

OUTSTANDING POST, above is my #1

I've said it before but it bears repeating, when I went through the Criminal Justice Academy to become a LEO they told a story of a Georgia LEO who carried most times, but he went to church one Sunday thinking no need to carry in church, unfortunately a gunman came in shooting that specific Sunday, the LEO survived but members of his family did not and he had to live with knowing he likely could have stopped it and protected/saved his family had he simply had his sidearm.

While a kid growing up in Brooklyn, NY, during the crack cocaine epidemic of the late 80's to early 90's I saw an undercover police officer walk his last three or four steps before he fell, face down, due to a gunshot wound to the torso. It was not uncommon to see the occassional chalk marks on the street corners on my way to take the subway to school. Just driving into Fort Bragg, almost every day, I hear about a shooting, or other act of violence occur right in this area.

If I ever loose a loved one due to an act of violence and I was present and all six of my guns were safely locked in my gun safe at home, I'll never be able to live with myself.

Great read and I remember the crack cocaine epidemic back in the 80's. I love it when women stand up for the right to bear arms!

Here's a related tidbit.

How do you tell the difference between Liberals, Conservatives and Southerners?

You're walking down a deserted street with your wife and two small children. Suddenly, a dangerous looking man with a huge knife comes around the corner, locks eyes with you, screams obscenities, raises the knife, and charges.

You are carrying a Glock .40, and you are an expert shot. You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family.

What do you do?

Liberal Answer:

Well, that's not enough information to answer the question!

Does the man look poor or oppressed? Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire him to attack?

Could we run away? What does my wife think? What about the kids? Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand? What does the law say about this situation? Does the Glock have an appropriate safety built into it?

Why am I carrying a loaded gun anyway, and what kind of message does this send to society and to my children? Is it possible he'd be happy with killing just me?

Does he definitely want to kill me, or would he be content just to wound me? If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while he was stabbing me? Should I call 9-1-1?

Why is this street so deserted? We need to raise taxes, have a paint and weed day, and make this a happier, healthier street that would discourage such behavior.

This is all so confusing! I need to debate this with some friends for a few days and try to come to a consensus.

Conservative Answer:

BANG!

Southerner's Answer:

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! rackety-click...(sounds of reloading).

Wife: "Hun, he looks like he's still moving, whadda y'all kids think?"

Son: "Mama's right Daddy, I saw it, too."

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! click.

Daughter: "Nice group, Daddy! Were those the Winchester Silver Tips?"

My ass!!! I was packing at both my Mother's and my Aunt's, they were on consecutive days. Another of my Aunts gave be a big hug, in the Episcopal Cathedral in downtown Houston, and felt the weapon in a shoulder holster!! The look on her face was PRICELESS!!! Not a very good part of town and on a weekend, not a lot of people around, other than the homeless/wineos.

In case it hasn't made the rounds yet....

appropriate addendum some of you might relate to:

1. Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you.

2. If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

3. I carry a gun cause a cop is too heavy.

4. When seconds count, the cops are just minutes away.

5. A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him 'Why do you carry a 45?' The Ranger responded, 'Because they don't make a 46.'

6. The old sheriff was attending an awards dinner when a lady commented on his wearing his sidearm. 'Sheriff, I see you have your pistol. Are you expecting trouble?' 'No Ma'am. If I were expecting trouble, I would have brought my shotgun.'

7. Beware the man who only has one gun. HE PROBABLY KNOWS HOW TO USE IT!!!

But wait, there's more!

I was once asked by a lady visiting if I had a gun in the house. I said I did. She said 'Well I certainly hope it isn't loaded!' To which I said, of course it is loaded, can't work without bullets!' She then asked, 'Are you that afraid of someone evil coming into your house?' My reply was, 'No not at all. I am not afraid of the house catching fire either, but I have fire extinguishers around, and they are all loaded too.' To which I'll add, having a gun in the house that isn't loaded is like having a car in the garage without gas in the tank.

I am 24, pretty well kept, and my father is 67 with one metal knee. I am still afraid to fight him. I've seen him close-hand bench press the transmission to an International M off of him, then hold it in place with one hand while the other locked it into the chassis. If he didn't knock me out, there's always the Keltech he keeps his wallet wrapped around.

There is another part, as long as a person is not intent of violating a law, why does it matter why they are carrying a firearm.

I like what was posted and it is a excellent way to discuss this issue with those who are "gun-ignorant". For me any lawful carry, does not need to be explained. Sadly for the anti-gun crowd and even members of the pro-gun group, they is a belief that a valid reason in their opinion is the only reason to carry, have or shoot a firearm.

Example, " I am a avid hunter, I do not see why and agree that military firearms should not be used for hunting, they are not hunting rifles". Sadly I forgot the guys name who was a outdoor writer who fell for that trap. The easiest anti-fire arm position to get suckered on, is the "reasonableness" or valid usage opinion.

I carry a gun because I still enjoy the freedom to do so, provided by many soldiers, before my time, who also carried guns. I also swore to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. How can I do that without a firearm? Pointing my finger? No one listens to a pointed finger.

Carrying a firearm honors the spirit of freedom, and our ancestors who fought, and died for it. Also, in a firefight, I would much rather have a firearm, than a butter knife.

Finally, I believe that punishing lawful gun owners by creating new, more onerous laws, and restricting Constitutionally guaranteed rights, when we already don't enforce the tens of thousands of gun laws we have on the books, is like beating your dog because the neighbor's dog shit in your yard.
