Flash-lack of literacy causes cancer

I thought the following excerpt from in the most recent Phi Kappa Phi magazine would be of the utmost interest to all you medical types. I am sure that after you read this that you will want to include some basic reading texts in you medical kits as part of your tools of the trade.

"Those who lack basic literacy skills are more likely than others to suffer from heart disease, diabetes, and prostate cancer, and as people gain literacy skills, they are more likely to understand their health problems and to follow treatment regimens properly."

Now you know that you all can prevent many of the problems that we thought might have been caused by pesticides, genetics, bad diets, and poor choices.

Jack:

My wife Nancy has concluded a study, which indicates the greater your education, the lesser you chance of declining mental accuity in your later years...Basically, the brain is the most complex organ in the human body, and it is as simple as use it or lose it. Nancy has graphs which show that we males decline mentally at a faster rate than females, more CSF, and less grey matter as we age.

Pts whos families are involved with their plan of care have better outcomes as do pts who are informed, assertive, and aggressive about there care.

It amazes me how much complaining and accusation I hear from pts and their families yet rarely do I hear requests for information or teaching.

I think that EMT-B and some sort of healthcare navigation course (ie medical terminology, A&P, insurance structure , benifits, and billing, ethics) should be mandatory for graduation from highschool much like drivers ed-
