Pink Floyd "Us and Them" redux

http://patdollard.com/2008/09/pink-f...-with-jihadis/

And the lyrics for you young'ns:

Us and Them
And after all we're only ordinary men
Me, and you
God only knows it's not what we would choose to do
Forward he cried from the rear
And the front rank died
And the General sat, as the lines on the map
Moved from side to side
Black and Blue
And who knows which is which and who is who
Up and Down
And in the end it's only round and round and round
Haven't you heard it's a battle of words
The poster bearer cried
Listen son, said the man with the gun
There's room for you inside

They showed the making of Dark Side of The Moon last night. Those Guys are and were amazing Musicians. I always put Musicians in a totally different category then pop performers and Singers.

"Another Brick in the Wall" is brilliant. It is one of my inspirations as a teacher. Wright was 65. When did I get SO old???

If you've never seen "Live at Pompeii", I highly recommend it. Pink Floyd was so ahead of their time it's not even funny. Just incredible musicians that changed the face of rock music.

An old friend played "echoes" for me back in 1998, and I adopted it as my handle after hearing the lyrics.
The last stanza, in particular, always brings tears to my eyes.

"echoes"
------Pink Floyd

Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves
In labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant time
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine.

And no-one called us to the land
And no-one knows the wheres or whys
But something stirs and something tries
And starts to climb towards the light

Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can

And no-one calls us to move on
And no-one forces down our eyes
And no-one speaks and no-one tries
And no-one flies around the sun

Cloudless everyday you fall upon my waking eyes
inciting and inviting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Come streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning

And no-one sings me lullabies
And no-one makes me close my eyes
And so I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky

"And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear
You shout and no one seems to hear
And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon"

- Pink Floyd, "Brain Damage", Dark Side of the Moon

I could (and have) listened to the Floyd for months on end. My wife and I danced to every part of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" when we first started dating. Didn't care what the lyrics were. Just dug the music.

I agree with kgoerz. There are musicians like the guys in Pink Floyd, and then there are entertainment acts and hype machines. Sadly, we are losing a whole lot of the former, with no one to really replace them.

Imagine what the headlines 40 years from now could look like. "Sean Combs aka Puff Daddy aka Diddy died today. He was the writer of...well, nothing really. But he sampled a whole lot of stuff and passed it off as music."

Trust me...the musicians you speak of are still out there...just a little quieter.

Holly

You're right, Holly. They just get covered up by the "machine" I suppose.

"The band is just fantastic, that's really what I think.
Oh, by the way, which one's Pink?"

(Pink Floyd, "Have a Cigar", Wish You Were Here)

Seems kind of prophetic now, doesn't it?

Take heart though Bandy...we musicians are still around, and fight "the machine" on Our terms.

Back about 20-30 years ago "Pink Floyd" was interviewed in Cleveland by radio station 105.7 WWWM the day before their concert at Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls. They were asked to name the most influential band to them and their music. Anybody want to take a guess at what group it was?

Pink Floyd is OK...I miss Jimi, Janice, and Arlo...and the only thing I'd ever test positive for would be for high levels of cafeine.

I saw Jimi in April 1970 at CalExpo and Janice with Big Brother in Jan 1968 at Sac State.
