I Agree. My initial impression was that this is propaganda.
Perhaps Harry Reid will find it of use...

Just checking around a little this is what I found...

Quote:
According to Army statistics, the incidence of U.S. Army soldiers attempting suicide or inflicting injuries on themselves has skyrocketed in the nearly five years since the start of the Iraq war.

Last year's 2,100 attempted suicides -- an average of more than 5 per day -- compares with about 350 suicide attempts in 2002, the year before the war in Iraq began, according to the Army.

The Army lists 89 soldier deaths in 2007 as suicides and is investigating 32 more as possible suicides. Suicide rates already were up in 2006 with 102 deaths, compared with 87 in 2005.

Pentagon says there have been 172 suicides by troops in the war zones. That's not the entire picture, however, because that count does not include those who returned home and committed suicide while still in the military.

As of January, the Army said at least 89 soldiers had taken their own lives in 2007, and the deaths of 32 others were being investigated as possible suicides.

This isn't specifically about the incident mentioned but is just general information. Adding some of the numbers though, the 600 mentioned with only half being successful might not be so far off. As far as the "mummies," I'm still skeptical...

Tanto;

You are new here. We've talked about suicide a number of times, including the military vs civilian rates and the age / sex rates. Take care or you'll get the search-more post less warning.

I'm a little bitter that I clicked on that link. That is not a web site that I want on my browser history.

Pete, I mean no disrespect, I wasn't intending to repeat anything already stated in another thread or change the main point of the subject here. I know that it is difficult to find truthful, accurate information in the news and I found the information relevant to providing at least some credibility to the Press TV article as the thread is titled "Is this BS or a screw-up?" (The quote about the military suicide rate being lower than the general population was to help keep things in perspective...)

Again, I meant no disrespect and will watch what I post.

Tanto;

You are new here and if you want to help with the credibility of an Iranian news souce talking about US troop killing civilians - go ahead. I think your stay here will be short.

Search SA while you are pondering my post. We will be keeping an eye on you.
