Aug 31, 1973

I know it's a day early but some of the younger folks might need some extra time.

What happened on this day, August 31, 1973?

You FOGs please give the younger people a chance to answer. I know all of you know it.

How the hell did you know that I was sitting on a MAC flight at Anderson AFB awaiting a taifun to blow by so we could continue on to Clark enroute to Ton Son Nhut and Don Muang.

Or were you asking about something else?

Richard

Are you speaking as a witness to this fact.

The first thing that came to mind was the end of the Vietnam War, but when I looked it up, the information given was August 29, 1973. But then I came to my senses and realized it was where the Confederates defeated the Union at the Second Manasses/Bull Run.

From The Archives

From The Achives of the Fayetteville Observer

Aug 31, 1973: All airborne-qualified personnel on jump status and assigned to airborne units on Fort Bragg are required to wear a maroon airborne beret.

And a little tid-bit for you freefall guys.

Aug 30, 1973: After 1,785 freefalls over a period of 11 years, Fort Bragg Command Sergeant Major Henry T Belton becomes the 60th person in the United States to record 12 hours of freefall time. Belton receives the United States Parachute Association Gold Freefall Badge for achieving this goal.

And going way back - a bit on our brothers in AF Blue.

Aug 31, 1958: Master Sgt. Thomas E Hicks becomes the first Pope Air Force Base NCO to attain the new grade of Senior Master Sergeant. He is one of 2,000 Master Sergeants throughout the Air Force selected for the newly-created garde.
