savage 22 hp
Looking for some help. Got a Savage model 99 in 22 HP caliber for my son to possibly use this year for deer season. Having one heck of a time finding ammo for it. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Doc

Be careful!! Some States do not allow the use of .22 cal for Deer Hunting!!
Take care.

Natchez is GTG.
I use them regularly.

FMF Doc,
I used a .22 Savage HP out of a Brno ZH205 combo gun (5.6x52R over 12 ga) to take a nice spikehorn this past fall. I shot him at 72 yards from the right rear, the bullet entered behind the ear and came out under the eye on the left and no tracking was involved.
I use RCBS dies and Hornady .227 dia 70 gr SP at around 2600 fps. The bullets are actually made with a fairly heavy jacket so they hold together pretty well.
Ensure that you have that Savage check for headspace as they tend to stretch bass pretty bad and eventually suffer case head separation...

Blake, did you ever make an intro post?
You've been around here a while.

Actually I don't remember - and you're right it's been awhile. I do tend to read more than post, but I'll throw one up ASAP...

Here's an Idea.
Trap a deer, put it stocks, then have your son shoot it in the temple a few times. Blitz being a Smart ass(I said it first this time.)
Not that a22 would not kill a deer, but you need to on stand buy with a substancially larger caliber and be able to hit a rapidly moving target.

LOL, You'd be amazed of the exit hole the 22hp puts in a whitetail, serious knockdown power I think comes from the velocity. My son didn't get the oppurtunity to get a deer this year with it but has taken some woodchucks at over 200yds out. Thanks for all the help from everyone and I now have plenty of ammo.
