Man jumps with no parachute

Man jumps with no parachute and dies.

Wonder what he was thinking when he reached for his rip cord or deployment chute? Something like "Boy, was that ever stupid!"

He was not the first and will not be the last.

Perhaps his motto was: Live fast, die young, and leave a messy corpse?

If I'm not mistaken, his descent would have taken a little more than 30 seconds. I suspect those were a very long 30 seconds.

...or caught up in the moment. Would not be the first time. Not a very good day for anyone I would suspect.

While customers seeking to jump are required to fill out paperwork and show identification, Carafello was not asked for his ID.

"Why would I ask for his ID?" asked Rawlins. "He wasn't sky diving. I'm not sure he put his real name on the paperwork when he signed in."

Rawlins noted the man listed "General Schwarzenegger" as his emergency contact.
First off, I cannot see how they allow anyone on any kind of plane today without a positive ID. That in itself is NUTS and irresponsible.

Second, the guy lisetd Gen. Schwarzenneger as an emergency contact. No one thinks this is odd??? Holy crap!!

It wasn't the jump; it was that abrupt stop at the end that got him.

The guy knew he was going to die. Whether he thought dying that way would look cool on film, who knows? My sympathies are with the pilot and others he deceived into helping him do it.

I guess if I were looking to kill myself I might as well get the best thrill ride of my life on the way out the door. I wonder if he had second thoughts on the way down.

I read an article about the Golden Gate Bridge as a suicide magnet. IIRC, in interviews with the few who survived, they ALL had a change of heart between launching and landing.

On a personal note, I hate pain, I would rather go to sleep and never wake up, so I am fighting death all the way to the end. Last thing I would do was watch my death rushing up at me.

I think about that when I see the photos and video clips of all those poor souls who chose to leap to their deaths from the top floors of the WTC towers. When faced with certain death, either by burning or by high-speed concrete, I'm not sure I wouldn't have done the same thing. Hopefully I'll never have to make that decision.

Back in the '86 or '87 timeframe a video photog leaped from a Twin Beech at Louisburg, just northeast of Raleigh; he was filming a tandem jump. He too, made the jump sans gear. I remember the local news showing the footage recovered from his camera, until just prior to treetop level, where they cut it.

It's hard to imagine what goes thru a man's mind when that happens.. (I know, I know.. you don't have to say it...).

yep, caught up in the moment becoming the worst moment of your soon-to-be-over corporeal life.
