Command History office is requesting assistance

RELEASE NUMBER: 071205-01
DATE POSTED: DECEMBER 5, 2007

PRESS RELEASE: Historians embark on Camp Mackall project

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (USASOC News Service, Dec. 5, 2007) -- As U.S. Army Special Operations Command closes in on its 18th anniversary, the Command History office is aggressively working on a comprehensive history of Camp Mackall.

The Command History office is requesting assistance from veterans, retirees, military members and their families, and the general public with any information concerning Army Special Operations Forces, airborne units and their relationship with Camp Mackall.

“We are preparing a history of Camp Mackall beginning with the establishment of Camp Hoffman in 1943 and continuing through Camp Mackall’s use in supporting both airborne and Army Special Operations Forces,” according to Eugene G. Piasecki of USASOC’s History Office and the lead historian for the project. “The intent of this history is to show Camp Mackall’s importance in the formation and training of the 11th, 13th, 17th, 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions during World War II and today’s Special Forces, Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations units.

“We are especially interested in photos, maps, rosters or any other documents or publications concerning events at Camp Mackall from 1943 through 2005. Any information or artifacts provided will be copied and/or photographed and returned to the lender as quickly as practicable,” Piasecki said.

The Command History office will also conduct oral history interviews in addition to collecting physical artifacts.

“Any assistance in accomplishing this worthwhile effort would be greatly appreciated,” he said.

Individuals with artifacts or personal knowledge of this period of Army and SOF history are encouraged to contact Mr. Piasecki. His contact information is: e-mail eugene.g.piasecki@soc.mil; telephone is (910) 432-4320 and fax to (910) 432-9328; mailing address is Commander, U.S. Army Special Operations Command, Attn: AOHS, 2929 Desert Storm Drive Stop A, Fort Bragg, N.C. 28310.
