Sometime between Sept 7 and 8, an individual or a group, defaced multiple panels on the Wall with an oily substance.

A video has been uploaded to youtube. The write-up says the damage appears permanent.

No doubt done to coincide with General Petraeus' testimony this week.

Do they have any cameras at the Memorial to be able to find who did this?

Vandalism at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial?

WASHINGTON - U.S. Park Police are investigating a possible case of vandalism at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the National Mall.

National Park Service rangers noticed what they call a light, oily substance on the memorial's wall panels and paving stones on Saturday. The substance was spread over an area of 50 to 60 feet.

U.S. Park Police are still investigating what the substance is, and if it was left on purpose.

"We have not reached a conclusion as it whether this was intentional or whether it is accidental. It is simply too premature to say," National Park Service spokesman Bill Line says.

Preservation staff are working to remove the substance and say they believe they can do so without causing any permanent damage.

Patriots and Comrades All:

After several attempts, I was able to contact SGT xxxxxxxx
of the National Park Service (NPS), to check on the facts
about the defacement of the Vietnam Wall last weekend. He
explained it was a cleaning accident by a Park Ranger and
NOT a defacement as was originally reported by the Vietnam
Veterans of American (VVA). The NPS is regarding this as
an accident instead of an act of vandalism or terrorism.

Our National Commander Pat xxxxxxxx has the
direct phone numbers for SGT xxxxxx of the NPS, and can
verify these facts with him directly. A copy of this
correction is also being sent the VVA for their follow up
and verification. My apology for the error, as sometimes
it is not always possible to reach the NPS immediately.

Any future report of attempted or actual vandalism will
be verified with the NPS in advance, even if that means a
significant delay in reporting the incident.

So it appears the park rangers don't talk to the park police, the cleaning crew didn't own up for a few days and nobody still knows what the fluid was.

That fluid trail sure looked funny the way it followed the wall and then "walked" out around something and then back to the wall.

And it took the Park Police over 2 days to figure all this out?

WASHINGTON — An oily substance found splashed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial this month was the result of vandalism, U.S. Park Police determined.

Sgt. Robert Lachance, a Park Police spokesman, said Monday that a detective made the conclusion, but he declined to provide further details because of the investigation is ongoing.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, which built the structure, has offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.

The oily substance on the black granite wall — which bears the names of more than 58,000 men and women killed or missing in the Vietnam War — was first reported Sept. 7. National Park Service officials said they did not know what the substance was, and at first said it was unclear whether it was the result of vandalism or some kind of accident.

On Monday, dark blotches remained along a stone curb at the base of the wall for much of its length. At least 14 of its 140 inscribed panels appeared to be stained.

Park Service spokesman Bill Line said maintenance and preservation crews were working to remove the stains and marks but were proceeding cautiously to avoid further damage. He said officials are confident they can remove all the stains, but it could take a week or more.

"It's deplorable that someone would vandalize what's really a national shrine," said Jan C. Scruggs, founder and president of the Memorial Fund. "It's an outrage. It's sad."

Hummmm.....why the 2 stories?

First it was reported as "vandalism", then it was retracted and labeled as an "accident", now IT IS an act of "vandalism".

Either way, it's horse shit. If it is nothing more than a n accident, that cleaning crew has got some serious clean up to do, and right quick. If it is an act of vandalism, then there's got be be some serious monkey stomping to do.

But mostly, someone's got some 'spalin' to do.
