COL Anthony J. Carbone (RET)

Anthony J. Carbone, of Lynnfield and Northfield, VT, a retired U.S. Army Colonel and former Commandant of Cadets and Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Norwich University, died Sunday night after a long illness. He was 72.

At the dedication of the Sullivan Museum and History Center, U. S. Army Chief of Staff, General Gordon R. Sullivan called Colonel Carbone the “face of Norwich.” Raised in Medford, the son of the late Anthony and Margaret Carbone, Anthony graduated from Norwich University in 1958 and embarked on a long and distinguished career as an officer in the United States Army, bringing with him the principals and integrity he honed at Norwich and which guided him in all of his assignments in the Army and as a father and academic. He served through the height of the cold war in the armored cavalry both at home and in seven overseas tours of duty, including two combat assignments in Vietnam, one with the Special Forces. His overseas duty also brought him to serve in Germany and in Korea. Throughout his years of service, his dedication and loyalty to Norwich University never wavered. During the Vietnam War he returned to Norwich University to teach military science. He also fulfilled an assignment as an instructor at the Command and General Staff College, Ft. Leavenworth. In 1980, Col. Carbone earned a Masters Degree in Public Administration at Penn State. In 1985 he returned to teaching and as Commandant at Norwich. He retired from the military in 1988 and for 10 years afterwards served as Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Norwich, during which time he presided over three capital campaigns, securing the University’s ability to prepare students for the 21st century.

He was the beloved husband of Edda (Pietrantoni) Carbone. He was a devoted father to Lynne Brown and her husband Christopher of Winchester, Diana Welch of Northborough, Anthony J. Carbone, Jr. MD and his wife Inna of Winchester, Cynthia Fagan and her husband James of Lynnfield, Pamela Meany and her husband William of Glastonbury, CT. He was a loving grandfather to Allison, Stephanie, Victoria, Laura, Julia, Jessica, James, Caroline, Anthony, William and Stephanie. He was a dear brother to Theresa MacDonald of Titusville, FL the late Rosemarie Antonelli and Lucy Bonasera.

His funeral will be from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford, Friday at 9 AM, followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Joseph Church, 118 High Street, Medford, at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend and may visit with the family Thursday from 4 thru 8. Services will conclude with burial at Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester.
