AD Ware

I picked up some AD ware I cant get rid of. Every time I hit a link in Google I get sent to another search engine page. One advertising cars, music, porn or some other crap. I scanned with several different spy ware programs and Mcafee virus scan. Didn't find anything. Still getting sent to these pages when clicking on a google link.
I have been banning these web pages as they pop up and that has helped some. However, there seems to be a never ending supply of them. I just increased my Fire Wall settings and seeing if that will work. Pretty annoying when you have a slow connection.
Any other suggestions, anyone have this happen to them before?

SpyBot Search and Destroy

The best single program I have found for malware is called Spybot Search and Destroy. It checks for Home Page Hijackers, Search Redirectors (that's what you apparently have) as well as trojans, dialers, etc. It is free, they ask for a donation but there is no difference in functionality whether or not you make a donation. There are two modes, regular and advanced. Use the advanced mode, TOOLS, and run STARTUP, where you will discover every program set to run itself automatically when you first starrt your computer. You can disable them, or erase them. And also on TOOLS, you can search out BHO (Browser Helper Objects) that work their way into your internet browser and intercept commands, sometimes favorably, but sometimes unfavorably.
There are some additional useful tools, for example, you can "set" internet explorer so the home page cannot be changed without your express consent. And you can set privacy settings.
Almost as good, equally free, is Windows Defender, by Microsoft. It is a fast free download and looks for highjackers, and so on.

I agree with CSB that Spybot Search & Destroy is a great program to use. I also use LavaSoft's Ad-Aware SE Personal in conjunction with Spybot S&D. Ad-Aware does the same thing as Spybot...sometimes one program will find something that the other doesn't. You can find Ad-Aware SE at this link http://www.lavasoftusa.com/. Be sure to download the free version (see the green box on the far right of the screen when you click on the above link).

If that doesn't work, you can go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/
. This site has a forum section that may discuss the problem you're having. One thing that the forum techies may ask you to do is to download a program called HiJack This. This is ok, because this is a program that allows you to see what processes are being run in your registry and other computer processes. It also lets them see in the forum where the problem is so they can help you get rid of the files that are causing your redirects.

While thinking through this, I ran a search on bleepingcomputer.com of "google redirect" and came up with the following thread. After reading the thread, it looks like they were successful in getting rid of the Google redirect. Here is the link for that thread; but, I warn you in advance, it will take some time in going through the process. Be prepared to spend a few hours meticulously going through the steps necessary to get the problem resolved. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/foru...oogle+redirect

Hope this helps. Good luck.

thanks a lot for this thread.

Had adware problem that's been ignored for some time.
Windows defender was quick to install (only 4.7mb), and it took care of the problem in no time

kgoerz, Did you get your problem taken care of or still having issues? I wrote something for AM some time back for his Windows ME machine, but the steps and links are available for other Windows OS's:

Yes Bandycpa Squared me away. Used HJT and posted the log on his Forum. Took two steps to get the bug out of my Computer. It was relatively easy compared to most of the infections I saw on those forums. First virus I ever got. I'm usually very careful.
I downloaded a video converter program. I was in a rush. Companies name I never heard of before. Knew I messed up right there and then. Always go with a known name is the lesson I learned.
Mike Coffee should be in the mail Wed.
Thanks.
