GO move: BG(P) Sal Cambria to SOCPAC

Cambria honors the Quiet Professionals

CAMP H.M. SMITH, Hawaii (Courtesy of SOCPAC Public Affairs, July 5, 2007) – Brig. Gen. (Promotable) Salvatore F. Cambria assumed command of Special Operations Command-Pacific (SOCPAC) here today.

“The men and women of Special Operations Command-Pacific have affected the lives and fortunes of folks [in the Southern Philippines] who don’t have electricity,” said Adm. Timothy J. Keating, commander, U.S. Pacific Command, who officiated the ceremony.

“They showed the Philippine military what to do, and they have watched the Philippine military as they restored freedom to folks who desperately needed it because they had it taken away by terrorists.”

The Dept. of Defense announced last month Cambria’s assignment as SOCPAC Commander. Cambria, an Army Special Forces officer, replaced Maj. Gen. (Promotable) David P. Fridovich. Fridovich commanded SOCPAC for two and a half years.

Cambria spoke at the ceremony about how he’s looking forward to joining SOCPAC’s talented team of quiet professionals.

“I am deeply aware of SOCPAC’s proud history and the many significant accomplishments under General Fridovich’s leadership,” said Cambria. “I look forward to joining this very talented team of quiet professionals.”

Cambria commented that it was an honor and privilege to follow Fridovich, and that he looks forward to continuing the great work Fridovich has started in the command.

“God bless this beautiful area of the world and all the cultural and national diversity,” Cambria added.

As SOCPAC Commander, Cambria exercises operational control of special operations forces within the Pacific Region. SOCPAC forces play the dominant role in U.S. Pacific Command War on Terror operations.

SOCPAC troops are the core of Operation Enduring Freedom-Philippines. Through their advise and assistance to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the AFP have improved their ability to coordinate and sustain counterterrorism operations.

SOCPAC forces are also involved in humanitarian assistance projects in the Southern Philippines such as medical, dental and veterinarian clinics; and engineering projects such as water, road and classroom
improvement.

Cambria is a 31-year Army veteran who has served in multiple Special Operations assignments. In addition to SOCPAC, he has held command positions as Commander, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Bragg, N.C., and Commander, Special Operations Command (South) at Homestead Air Reserve Base, Fla. Cambria’s most recent assignment was Director of Operations, U.S. Southern Command in Miami, Fla.
