That book is going to the top of my "to read" list!

Pondering: Why is it that it takes Harvard Professors to validate what Professional Soldiers. Com has known all along?

Gran Plan/Policy

There's nothing "Grand" about liberal democrats, there in lies your answer. Visionaries are seen as quacks. That is until history dictates otherwise. As noted this may be only the third "Grand Plan" in the history of the U.S. since FD's post WWII strategy to open commerce, produce free trade, stengthen economies of ally's and free nations.

History rarely reads as having been friendly and wars have not been won by embargos. In this case, having an strong viable and economically stable ally right smack between Iran and Syria shouldn't take a Yale or Harvard scholar to enlighten anyone what the historical significance could be. The hard part is actually having the political stomach to accomplish this. Something the liberal democrats have never possesed.

This article was published in February 2004.

At that time this made sense:

"So far the military action in Iraq has produced a modest improvement in American and global economic conditions; an intensified dialogue within the Arab world about political reform; a withdrawal of American forces from Saudi Arabia; and an increasing nervousness on the part of the Syrian and Iranian governments as they contemplated the consequences of being surrounded by American clients or surrogates. The United States has emerged as a more powerful and purposeful actor within the international system than it had been on September 11, 2001."

I doubt Mr. Gaddis that this is the case right now.

Age of pandemonium: In an encounter with Ezzat Ibrahim, historian John Lewis Gaddis discusses US grand strategy and where it has gone awry under Bush, Al-Ahram Weekly. 25 - 31 January 2007 Issue No. 829, Cairo.
