Movie: Shooter

Anyone else read Stephen Hunter's Point of Impact? That is the book this movie is based off of. I read it year's ago, and I liked it. I'm not a sniper, but from my limited knowledge it was pretty accurate and the author did his research on military sniping, and long range shooting.

I'm looking forward to the movie, hopefully they stay accurate to the book.

I read the book years ago and to this layman it was pretty good. I have no idea if he accurately portrays Snipers but it was a good read non the less. Sadly I think that like most Hollywood movies today it will be nothing more than a cheap copy of the book with a few political points thrown in. I hope I am wrong.

I liked the book, Hunter is one of my favorite authors. Of course, I have no idea as to the accuracy with regards to shooting, but as a novel it's terrific. Hunter was a member of The Old Guard during Vietnam. He appears regularly on a local radio show here, and mentioned that he had nothing to do with the movie once Hollywood took over. It's been in development for 10 years or so, and Marky Mark is the third or fourth actor that finally ended up with the role.

I will put my copy on the exchange list in case anyone wants to read it before the movie comes out.

I read his "The Master Sniper" when I was in high school and really liked it.

I also read "Dirty White Boys" and "Black Light". Both were really good. I might have read "Point of Impact", too.

"The Master Sniper" also introduced me to Paul Celan's "Todesfuge", which part was used in the preface of the book.

So I took the week off to paint my mothers house. In between drinking beer, moving her furniture, and painting the walls, I put this movie in.

There is a part where they go see the old timer in Tenn about balistics. Wouldn't you know it the FBI agent that helps Swaggert (Mark Walberg) is wearing a Che' T-shirt.

Go figure.

Although I did here Walberg mention one of NDD's favorite axioms: "Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast."

A few lines in the movie were realistic, and at least they had some of the terminology down. But the action sequences were ridiculous. Especially as Mark Whalberg is running from the cabin, firing multiple rounds into dozens of BG's and not getting a scratch on him.

Also, the last scene in the snow? Give me a break. I dont know what Sniper training the BG's went through, but if my buddies are getting picked off by an enemy sniper, I am sure as hell not going to sit there and wait for my turn. Whalberg's ass would be taking a snow nap.

Agreed - I liked most of the book (some of it dragged a$$), but the movie is considerably different. A decent piece of action - it just didn't match up to the book in too many ways.

I like movies, great entertainment value usually. I also found out the more I know about a subject the less I will like the movie. I felt the movie was a waste of the $6.00 it cost to see it.

The movies are never as good as the books, accurate or not...
