External Hard Drive (for computers)
Anyone have a model of external hard drive they would reccommend?

Western Digital. Maxtor's One Touch. Seagate's Externals. All are great, fairly inexpensive, and look nice.
Strictly speaking, in terms of reliability, hard drives from the major companies will perform equally.

Questions to ask.....connections...USB, firewire, or both, is speed necessary, what will it's primary use be, how large a dirve do you need, and is size of housing an issue?

Backing up my data from the main computer.
I'm told by "she who must be obeyed" that 300 GB should be good.

I have a Maxtor 152.66 GB that I use with my Mac. So far it has been real reliable. Its a Firewire Connection, with a seperate power source.

Hard Drive
All the brands mentioned above are pretty much equal. Hard Drives are fairly simple. Mine is 600GB. The best part is you can back up all your Desk Top and Lap Top info. How many times has anyone been deployed wishing they had some information that was sitting in their Desk Top a thousand miles away. Getting one with an extra large Hard Drive lets you just dump all your info on it without the worry of filling it up. Mine has saved me many times from repeating work when deployed. Just my 02

I'm a huge fan of the Maxtor OneTouch III. They make a 300GB (and even a 500GB) version, it runs IEEE 1394 and USB 2.0, and looks great to boot.
The best feature is the "one touch" backup... simply press the button on the front of the hard drive, and it backs up your entire hard drive automatically. Awesome.

This is what mountain Man needs.
Notice the key phrase above, "One Touch". I also have one. Bill, unless you have 300 gigs of info you don't need a 300 gig drive.
Something they don't say is it takes about 3 hours to back up my 110 gig hard drive once you hit that "one touch" button. 
This is something you do right before bed, back up the hard drive.

If you like to tinker...
Between backups, my digital pictures, and my wife’s shopping sprees on iTunes, external hard drives are a must. Another option is to mount an internal hard drive within a hard drive enclosure. Internal hard drives are cheaper, and there are always rebates and discounts available from CompUSA, Circuit City, Best Buy, etc. It’s easy to assemble, and there are a few steps in Windows to format the drive and partition it if you like. Then it is USB 2.0 plug-and-play on any computer. This way, when the drive eventually goes TU, or you want to go bigger, you can just swap it out for another drive.
I bought an enclosure like this, which holds a Western Digital 320GB, and another one like this, which holds a Maxtor 500GB. Circuit City has a web-only special right now on the WD 320GB, for $119.99 with free shipping.
