IIRC, I read somewhere that he used to take up two barstools at the bar where he and his compatriots hung out (in Saigon? Rnagoon? Bangkok?). He was shot down or crashed and it took him months to make his way home. He'd lost so much weight that no one recognized when he sat at the bar.
