There was an Australian jellyfish expert on the news tonight explaining the jellyfish barbs. He got stung with a little one (showed the size), it took 5 shots of morphine over 3 hours and he still didn't feel any relief. The he showed the one about the size that hit Irwin. Poor bastard must have been in a world of agony.

Steve Irwin
I also saw in a report that the stingray barb may have pierced his heart. Poor guy didn't stand a chance.
I loved watching Croc Hunter. He did a lot of good things for animal awareness, and was great for Australia. He will be terribly missed.

This was the report I read as well...
Quote:
Irwin was at Batt Reef, off the remote coast of northeastern Queensland state, shooting a segment for a series called "Ocean's Deadliest" when he swam too close to one of the animals, which have a poisonous barb on their tails, his friend and colleague John Stainton said.
"He came on top of the stingray and the stingray's barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart," said Stainton, who was on board Irwin's boat at the time....Collin said he suspected Irwin died because the barb pierced under his ribcage and directly into his heart

Really is a shame...he had done a LOT of kooky stuff over his years. I guess it finally caught up with him.
Rest in Peace Croc Hunter.

Really sad. A couple months back I was watching him and said to my wife that he gets to close to the edge and that it was going to catch up with him one day. I guess it did. Still very sad.

Steve Irwin led an amazing life before the tv shows, whatever he did, he came by it honestly.
When he was on tv I stopped everything to watch.
Did I learn anything? Yes. Do not mess with snakes or Australian crocs.
RIP Steve.

Have to agree.
I am pretty sure it will never be shown, but considering that the maximum length for a stingray barb is ten inches, how close do you think he was to have it put the barb directly into his heart?
My kids are in mourning though. RIP Steve. Thanks for the entertainment. Condolences out to Terri, Bindy, and Bob.

I really enjoyed watching his early stuff. When I was young I used to take my kids out into the desert, we would catch snakes, all kinds, Tarantulas, Scorpions, anything that raised our heartrate. My kids still talk about the good times we had...
But that man did things I wound not consider doing, he completely raised the bar! I'll miss him! We spent 30 days in Australia a few years ago, I really wanted to link up with him, it did not happen we toured wine growing regions instead.
Rest In Peace, Steve!

He sure raised my awareness of dangerous animals in places I'd love to visit. Rest in peace my good man, rest in peace.

A particularly bad way to die. He will be missed. In spite of/because of his antics, he was able to reach and educate a worldwide audience. His passion for the animals and environment was contagious. He was also a better goodwill ambassador for Australia than anything/anybody else in recent memory. My condolences and best wishes to his family. Peregrino

My kids and I have dived with sting rays often, sometimes swarms of them. While the barb is short it's on the underside of the whip-like tail. I've seen large rays snap their tail up and back and hit nurse sharks 2-3 feet above them. It's shocking to see the speed at which they strike.
Rays are about as aggressive as pet rabbits when they are in the open and seem to enjoy being stroked -- their skin feels like silk. But that tail evolved as a defensive measure for use when predators nosed around them when they were buried in the sand. My guess is Irwin was directly above the buried ray and gave it a poke in order to get a shot of it un-assing from the sand.
Sad day. He influenced a lot of kids to respect all life. He had such a nice family.
