Get a Grip

Gents:

Over the years, I have tried just about every grip made for my ARs and M-4s. Some have been better than others.

The Hogue and the original Ergo Grip were good, but each had desirable and undesirable characteristics.

Now I have found the nirvana of grips.

The new Falcon Ergo Sure Grip, available from the usual outlets, to include Brownells (573-000-026) takes the best characteristics of each, along with several other special features, and combines them seamlessly.

This grip comes in righ and left handed versions.

The Sure Grip is fitted to the hand better than any of the previous versions, with just the right amount of palm swell and finger grooving. It is significantly thinner in cross-section than the issue grip. Very subtly done.

It has a neoprene type overmold (like the Hogue) that makes it extremely grippable, and does not slip in the hand, wet or dry. It makes it very easy to shoot one handed with the weapon, should you have to, it is that stable.

The design includes a "filler" extension of the upper rear of the grip that extends a smooth sweep all of the way back to the rear of the receiver.

The SureGrip also comes with the "gapper" (no not that!) that plugs the sharp edged gap between the trigger guard and the pistol grip, where the trigger guard was designed to release for more space (I assume winter or gloved use), which I have never seen employed. It smooths the transition from the bottom of the trigger guard to the pistol grip very well.

Finally, it includes a plug that closes the bottom of the pistol grip and allows for the secure storage of small items there. No, due to its narrow profile, you cannot fit your spare flashlight or an extra mag in there, but it will allow you to store a few rounds of ammo, a small survival kit, some spare batteries for your Aimpoint, your weapons paperwork, or best of all, the contents of an Otis Grip Kit (minus the carrier) which contains enough pieces to clean your rifle without any additional supplies. Probably worth a separate review on its own.

The Sure Grip seems to be very durable in my testing thus far, showing no wear, separation, breakage, or melting under the assault of various cleaning fluids.

I highly recommend the Falcon Ergo Sure Grip to all of those who can swap a pistol grip on their ARs/M16s/M4s. Just don't lose the selector switch detent spring when you tear it down.

An excellent piece of gear for those who hump a rifle. Only thing better would be if it were free.

I will check one out for the SBR. Do you have experience with the Magpul MIAD? I picked up the basic kit and stuck it on my 6920. Offers multiple grip options and a smooth (versus fingergrooved) front strap. Texturing is positive, much prefer over the standard A2.

Edited: pics added.

I handled the MIAD at several trade shows and far prefer the Sure Grip.

This is the part of the weapon that you use most. The good thing is that grips are inexpensive to buy and try. I usually swap the grip I take off onto a back-up weapon, and cycle them down till they are out of circulation.

I don't see the Sure Grip coming off any time soon.

Boss - All you had to do was ask. I've been using them on my rifles/carbines for a year+. The only one that's still stock is my HP Service Rifle. I got the ones on the carbines before they were packaged with the plug and the gappers (since retrofitted w/gappers). I would recommend the gapper for anyone wanting to improve whatever grip they finally decide to use. The overmold makes a world of difference in the grip and the extended length of pull (trigger to rear of grip) fits my meathooks a lot better than the issue grip. It makes for a much more natural positioning of the trigger finger. Wish I could use it on my service rifle - the stock grip designed for smaller hands makes for a less than optimal (for me) angle of the trigger finger - that's why my SPR has the Ergo Grip. Overall, I too am very pleased with the Ergo Grip. That and they're a class act. I stopped by their booth the last day of the SHOT during the "mad minute" and they took the time to chat and square me away. Good people, good product - seems to go hand in hand. My .02 - Peregrino

The grip can make a huge difference of you weapon. I like the Ergo Grip with the rubber density as opposed to the plastic, but I got a Magpul modular kit and it fits my hand right with the proper combo of front/backstraps. I've tried the Hogue and Sierra SPR grips also, but the Magpul or Ergo are my favorites by far. I like the insert for the MIAD that allows for the transport of a spare bolt, as well. If you buy the kit with the trigger guard it is one smooth piece from the frontstrap through the mag well...no gaps or sharp edges to tear at the hands. I just wish it had the rubber texture like the ERGO or Hogue.

What do you recommend?

T.R.

Do you recommend this model for large hands on AR-15 AR-10s?

The Ergos and Hogues I have tried in the past seem to have a small grip radius.

I can easily wrap my trigger finger all the way around to the other side of the trigger (first joint of finger on the front edge of trigger).

Couldn't really tell by eyeballing the pics.

Thanks

It does feel smaller in circumference.

I can just barely palm a basketball and it fits me fine. I can get my trigger finger through to the point where the trigger is on the pad of my finger midway beween my first and second knuckles.

Doesn't bother me, though, feels good to my hand and I use the tip of my trigger finger to fire anyway.

Thanks again TR.

In my paws, a 1911 feels like a KelTec and a Desert Eagle with Hogues is close to the right size.

Wife was watching me this evening attempting to drop in a tiny battery in one of her watches and she laughed so hard, she choked.
