Post Colorado Army National Guard - Special Forces

This email contains the same information about Special Forces that was
sent out two days ago along with a "Frequently Asked Questions" sheet. Keep the emails and questions coming. I'll get answers to all of you. This FAQ sheet should help...

There are two units in the Colorado Army National Guard that may interest
many. The state of Colorado has 5/19th Special Forces headquarters as well as two Special Forces companies and a Military Intelligence unit that is co-located with our Special Forces headquarters.

If you or someone else you know is already a qualified 18 series or just wants to join the National Guard with future plans of possibly doing more with their career, get in touch with me and take a look at some of the options we have available. If you're an 18 series, with us in the National
Guard, you have the opportunity to reclass into another MOS or attend
additional Special Forces schools. For those that qualify, we have entry
level positions available for those that have no prior military service.

Have you ever wanted to reclass? With us, you can. You can also have up to 100% of your college tuition paid while you serve through our State Tuition Assistance program - that's on top of the GI Bill. There are a great number of benefits for those serving in the National Guard. Look
at the information below which includes answers to some of the most
frequently asked questions.

I ask that you all pass this email along for the widest dissemination. You
have the power to make a contribution to this nation's and our world's
security. Help build our team. You are welcome to email or call me at any
time. Thank you.

*An "exception to policy" may be submitted for people outside of
the above parameters.

WHAT IF I'VE RETIRED:
*If you've already retired from federal service as an enlisted
soldier, you are retired.

*If you've retired from the National Guard, there is a POSSIBILITY
you may be able to reenlist.

WHO CAN ENLIST:
*Non-Prior Service - people with no military service - 17 years of
age (with parental consent) to age 40.

*Prior Service & MOSQ 18 series - you may enlist directly into one
of the ODAs.

Enhancement Company after successful interview and physical assessment (
basic physical assessment may be done day of enlistment) - contact SFC

bonuses from 5-20k.

*We offer up to 20k on student loan repayment.

*Up to 100% for State Tuition assistance.

*GI Bill.

WHAT IS THE "READINESS ENHANCEMENT COMPANY":
The Readiness Enhancement Company (REC) is for Prior Service non 18 series
soldiers that wish to

*attend the Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS).

*The REC is co-located with 5/19th SFG(A) Headquarters
approximately 20 miles east of Denver.

*Physical and mental preparedness is on you 28 days out of the
month. One drill per weekend you will report to the cadre there and they
will observe you in a number of events and rate your progress and
performance. When you've displayed promise, they'll schedule you a class
date.

*5/19th SFG reports higher than an 80% success rate for those
personnel selected to attend SFAS.

HOW LONG WILL TRAINING TAKE:
*Once you've passed SFAS, you'll get a class date to attend the
Special Forces Qualification Course (SFQC). This is a Permanent Change of
Station (PCS) move.

*For Special Forces your training will include jump school, SUT,
BNCOC, MOS training (3 months to 1 year), Phase III, SERE Level C & Language School.

*Total time, once you've been selected, may be more than 2 years
before you report back to a team.

WHAT IF I HAVE A FAMILY:
* While you're in training for the Special Forces "Q" course at Fort
Bragg, you'll be authorized to take your dependents with you.

* You will receive BAH and BAQ just as full time soldiers do.

* Your dependents will have access to the same health and welfare
benefits as exist for the active component.

WHAT IF I'M ALREADY MOS QUALIFIED:
*18 series or other MOSQ personnel may enlist into the Colorado
Army National Guard and will then in-process at "Reception" into the
National Guard their first weekend drill and report to their unit between
7-30 days following for the first drill with their unit.

*You'll have ample opportunity to attend additional training, go on
short deployments, or reclass.

CITIZENSHIP:
*SF positions - US Required (other positions in National Guard
may only require immigrant status)

PHYSICAL STANDARDS:
*You should be in excellent health. Prior service that have a good
physical done w/in the last 5 years may "Field Enlist" - that is, enlist
without the inconvenience of going through the MEPS physical.

*In addition to excellent health, any applicants should be in the
"very fit" to "extremely fit" category. The REC and Special Forces selection
are not physical training camps.

LOCATION/RESIDENCE CONSIDERATIONS:
*You may enlist in the Special Forces or any other unit here
within the state if you are willing to travel.

*Compensation for travel is not offered - it's on the individual.
We have members of the unit that travel regularly to drill one weekend per
month from as far away as California and Texas.

CONTRACT WORK:
*If you are doing contract work overseas and have several months at
a time that you plan to be OCONUS, that may present a challenge and National Guard Special Forces may not be the fit for you. The Special Forces units here train and deploy for operations. That being said, we do have members, on a case by case basis, that do work outside of the country - their contracts are usually very short in duration (30-90 days) and most of those personnel have completed one or more combat tours as well.

*If you're brand new to the unit and haven't deployed, don't count
on it.

PART TIME and FULL TIME:
*Once you join the National Guard you may apply for an Active Guard
Reserve (AGR) position or Active Duty for Special Work (ADSW).

*AGR retirement is the same as Active Duty retirement.

*ADSW is temporary full-time status (does not count toward
active/AGR retirement)

CONDITIONAL RELEASE - FOR MEMBERS OF THE RESERVE:
*If you have wanted to go into Special Forces or into some other
career field in the National Guard, a conditional release is required - DD
Form 368. Your commander must sign it.

*You will not be eligible for any bonuses and will still have to
contract to serve out any remaining time and may be required to extend once
selected for Special Forces training.

Thank you for the extra information.

I will be joining the 5/19th SFG (Headquarters) very soon. I think my reception is on April drill. I will be in a communications role. Will have to attend school and Airborne. Looking forward to being there.

Gentlemen, I have a question.

I am planning to re-enlist and change MOS to 98G after I come back from deployment. I would really like to get into 5/19th. Now I understand that you can get in the unit if you're already MOSQ (among other things). Can I get assigned to the unit conditionally, given I'll compete DLI and AIT, or I'll have to be assigned to a conventional unit first and then try to get re-assigned to 19th after certain amount of time?

Thank you for your help!

If the MI CO Guy mentioned is the one I'm thinking about (from the Mountain Brigade), it's definately a unit to look into. Squared away commander and leadership. I'm from their BN HQ and these guys are hard-charging.

Colorado SF Question

I am in the Ohio Guard but intend to move to Colorado when I return from my current deployment. I am on stop loss until that time. I am not 18 series qualified yet but plan to take my career in that direction. I would appriciate any information or advice you could give me. Thank you for your time.

5/19 Recruiting

5/19 Recruiting is all over it. They helped us out with some mentorship when we first stood up down here in TX, and we're very grateful for the help. In fact, every NG SF recruiter we've worked with has been very helpful, and I think that speaks volumes to the SF brotherhood; we've got to put in top caliber guys in the entire Regiment, Active and Guard, without rivalry.

Thanks again, and please let us know if there's anything we can do down here in the Republic.

Gents,

There is only one company from 5/19 remaining in CO. C/5/19, which I was in since '92, has since moved its flag from Ft. Collins, CO down to TX, which is the new company they are trying to fill. B/5/19 is the only company and is at Ft. Carson. However, due to guys being scattered all over and limited room available on Carson, I believe the plan is to have a couple teams up in Ft. Collins, CO. Not sure on the details since I'm over here in the "Cradle of Civilization".

Do you need a number and cannot find it, with all of the resources at your command?
