Huckabee Tops McCain VP List

Former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee is at the top of the list of John McCain’s possible running mates, according to a top McCain fundraiser with ties to his inner circle.

Economic conservatives are likely to oppose the choice of Huckabee as McCain’s vice presidential candidate, given the populist tone of his campaign and his tax record as governor of Arkansas.

But in his “Capital Commerce” column for U.S. News & World Report, James Pethokoukis points to the fundraiser’s disclosure and cites several factors that could make Huckabee a strong asset for McCain.

For one thing, the former Baptist minister is a great campaigner who could garner support in the South among social conservatives and at the same time appeal to working-class voters in the crucial states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin.

Huckabee would also appeal to many more voters on a “he cares about me” level than millionaire investor and possible vice presidential choice Mitt Romney, especially given all the turmoil on Wall Street this year.

Finally, even economic conservatives who might hesitate to back Huckabee would certainly favor him over the threat of Obamanomics and higher taxes across the board.

Bad idea.

Another VP with little if any chance of winning a general election, and not appealing to libs, or conservatives.

Anyone besides me think we put to much stock in how a VP choice will affect the election. Unless the Candidates choice for VP is an extremist, left or right. I don't see it changing peoples minds in the Voting Booth.

Count me as one that would think that this would be a really bad choice. I want an heir waiting in the wings for 2012 and beyond. I don't want a light weight stuffed shirt just because he brings in "Christian" voters. Those voters aren't going to vote for Obama and could be convinced to support McCain without pandering to them.

I tend to agree with that. Most people vote the top of the ticket (and rightly so). I think VP really only matters to political insiders (read "big dollar contributors") and the media.

That said, with McCain's age, maybe it will be a bigger issue this time around.

I don't know. In this election, I know a lot of people that are truly on the fence. I also know a lot of people that are completely opposed to Huckabee, and won't vote for any ticket that he is on, even if that means voting for the other party.

IMHO, Huckabee represents the worst of the Rebuplican party. With his economic and taxation policies that are more "liberal" than that of many liberals, his "The Bible takes precedence over the Constitution," mindset, and his weak stance on immigration make him a candidate that I could never support. I know many people that feel the exact same way.

My guess is either the governor of FL or MN. Huckabee for Secretary of HHS. Romney for Commerce.

I'm hoping for Bobby Jindal for the VP slot.

Man. This just gets better & better eh?

Not only do we have the choice between a racist- Marxist, a Marxist thief and an open border-liberal - we're so hard up we're going to get an open border-constitutional revisionist too?

Perhaps a vote for the racist-Marxist would hasten the inevitable.

I hear a lot of Republicans saying this........ that if the Republican party is going to offer them such horrible choices, then they hope they lose.... and will even vote Democratic just to prove a point.

Not saying it's right, just that people are really, really unhappy with this combo.

I really think this is going to be one helluva race, even if Obama gets the nod.
