Hello all,
I am interested in knowing what the reasoning (aside from ergonomics) is behind keeping your head upright and "bringing the sight to your head" when shooting (especially in regards to shooting shotguns at moving targets)?

Is it that tilting your head affects your sight picture?

Thank you for your help,

Solid

The reason is simple. Your head (ears) control your balance and your eyes see the best when looking straight out of your head. You are in the best balance when the head is upright and relaxed. You see the best when the head is upright and relaxed.

As a rifle doesn't have ears or eyes, it shoots just as well canted as straight up and down. Don't hesitate to cant the rifle to bring the sights to your eyes. Compromise with the rifle only after you have done everything possible to make the rifle suit your body type and position.

Solid - Another main point is that shooting is a task that requires consistency. You must do the same thing over and over again to maintain any hope of accuracy. Anytime that you force a position, ie tilt your head unnaturally to the weapon, then you will have trouble repeating that tilt. Next your body will tire from being in an unnatural position and that alone will cause a change in your head position. My expereince is shooting rifles and you must always let the weapon come to you not the other way around.

Thank you gentlemen for your responses. I have and had no doubt in my mind that the right thing to do was to keep your head upright and bring the gun to it, not the other way around- I just didn't know the reasoning behind it.

Thanks again,
