View Full Version : query on identification of weapon?

NSW police have just seized a heap of illegal weapons and there is a picture of some of the seized items.

I can identify the knives and guns, but am wondering what the thing in the middle is, what the two dragons are meant for and why there seems to be flashlights on the table as well.

Ooooohhh, ok, I got the slingshot now. Still don't know about the rest though.

Can anyone help?

Here (http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/massive-weapons-cache-seized-in-raids/2005/09/30/1127804631963.html) is the link to the original story if my attachment doesn't work

Thanks NDD, Aricbcool.

It's all cheap stuff imported from China in bulk.

The people it would have been sold to wouldn't be the sort that would be interested in quality. ;)

Your "weapon" laws are more screwed up than ours. I heard you can't legally carry a pocket knife in NSW now!

Maisy

Nope, that's right. No knives of any kind unless they specifically relate to either your work or your hobby (or your religion! ) and you are on the way to/from it at the time of them finding it. Police have stop and seach rights for anyone they want.

Of course, since they are also severely overworked and understaffed, the chances of you being searched if you are not male, young, loitering in a group and dressed in gang colours, is probably pretty limited.

Having said that, every time I get on a plane I have to empty out a paring knife, a small pair of sewing scissors, a nail-file etc from my bag. I usually have a small heap of "dangerous" items sitting on my table by the time I'm finished.

My OH jokes that even if I ever did get searched, the chances of the nice policeman spotting anything buried in my crap is almost nil. :D

Edited to add:
And if you think the knife laws are draconian, someday I may share the full story of what I went though last weekend to get the pistol and rifle licence.

Suffice to say I now have this 'orrid feeling I have signed away all rights to my firstborn, and possibly my soul. :D

My God! What a horrible way to treat your law abiding citizen's.

The politicians in your society would have heart attack if they saw what I carried on me or in my truck on a daily baises.

Maisy,
Can citizen's in your country carry a Taser (legally)?

Maybe you need to visit??? ;)

Could do with a little thinning of the ranks around here. Anyone who would have a heart attack, we didn't need anyway! :D

I thought pistols were 100% banned after Port Arthur? Same with semi rifles.

Maisy,

Smokin Joe, I'm not sure about LEO's in different states, but tasers are not allowed to civilians. Victoria and South Australian LEO's now have them, and I think other state govts are trialling them.

Huey14, only automatics were totally banned. Pistols, rifles, shotties and semi's are still allowed, but under strict rules for their use.

The many and varied reasons for obtaining a licence include target/sport shooting, hunting, primary industry, collecting etc, with different levels of rules applicable to each type of licence.

So the very nice and helpful man reminded me that of course I will also be going rabbit hunting at home in QLD, so will need the hunting licence. The rabbits are really bad out home way...

Then there is the mandatory training course you must attend to qualify, the limits to what you can buy in the first 12 mths of the licence, the cooling off periods, etc, etc, blah, blah, blah...

Ah I see. There's a crazy theory running around that there was a team at Port Arthur or some such, secret agents from Mossad or the CIA or KFC or something. Crazy theory but interesting none the less LOL.

Maisy
09-30-2005, 00:11
ROFL, ya gotta be kidding me! I haven't heard that one, must be a NZ thing. :p

Mossad? CIA? Hahahaha, that's too funny!

I should think a group of Israeli/US gunmen would be a bit noticable running around in a small Tasmanian town, no?

Heck, anyone not directly related to the locals is a bit noticable down there! :D

Thanks for the Friday afternoon laugh Huey, that was a good one. :D

No worries, it made me laugh too :D

I'll see if I can dig it up- it's by an Aussie actually :p

Huey14

Here's a couple. Apparantly it was a Mossad attack due to the number of headshots or something.

Well, then it must be true... :D

Actually I also had a look after you raised this, and came up with some other interesting facts, including that a former Australian Brigadier, Brigadier Ted Serong, also believed it was a professional hit.

He was, among other things, the head of the most highly decorated Australian unit in Vietnam and senior advisor on counterinsurgency to the Commander of the US Military Assistance Command during that time.

Of course, he was also later the patron of an extremist right-wing Australian militia group called Ausi Freedom Scouts (and if you really want a good laugh, google these guys).

However, I come back to one question: Why?

I don't see who it would benefit.

None of the sites I read satisfactorily answered that question for me (although I did particularly find the Mossad theory hilarious. I doubt Australia even blipped on Mossad's screens back then, let alone setting up some convoluted scheme to bring gun control about). :D

Good Friday giggle though, thanks Huey. :D

I read somewhere that anything over 2 inches was just for show, so long as you know how to use it right. Are you saying (interesting accent BTW, Oz with a touch of Vermont :D ) bigger is better?

We will have to when Cananda decides to invade and take over your country and you don't have any weapons to defend yourselves.....

Maisy
09-30-2005, 08:28
Team Sergeant, they already have. We welcomed them with open arms, and before they knew it, they were buying land at hyper-inflated prices, eating native animals and taking home tacky souvenirs. Oh, no, wait, that was the Japanese.

That's right, we invaded Canada, been shipping over our comedians for some time there now. Of course, I don't think anyone has noticed yet... :D

edited to add: Give me 6 months, a training course, lots of money, membership of at least two different gun clubs (what else was there, oh yeah) and government approval, and I shall not be one of the great unarmed... :lifter

Of course, I can only buy one rifle and one air-pistol in the first 12 mths, so could ya hold off the invasion for a couple years please?

NZ has already occupied the Gold Coast. The Yanks are no threat until they get a foothold, and we will fight them tooth and nail for the beachhead.

LOL, and we luv ya there. Gathered all nicely together, in one easily accessible (avoidable) place... :D

There also seems to be an enclave around Bondi too...

I (as an American that's family fought here during the Civil war) should not be preaching to you guys. The mexicans will be in the majority right here in the United States by 2050. They will have taken this country without firing a shot and we tolerated/allowed it to happen to ourselves. This is not a anti-mexican rant, its a fact.

I might be moving to NZ soon enough.... AUS won't allow me to bring my weapons...

NZ is a lovely place to live, I won't knock my cousins next door, and Mr Harsey is right, there are some fantastic places to fish there. Smaller population = not as much regulation = better fun with toys.

And of course, Aus is just a small hop away, and there is always Darwin if you want less regulation. :D

I used to love doing 70 in a 60 Km zone, and getting passed by the cops in the paddywagon doing 80. No calls, no lights or sirens, just doing the rounds. If you ever saw anyone getting booked you knew they must have been doing stupid speeds.

Of course, you can do what my ex-SF out-law is doing, and spread the lovin' around amongst your Aus family... This does necessitate your children marrying an Aussie however... :D

Maisy

I loved Darwin. The people are great, the food is fantastic and the freedom is awesome. Coming from QLD the laid-back attitude was really noticable, and I loved the unlimited speed laws outside town.

Having a Darwin licence also turned out to be handy in other states - no points system in NT then, just pay the fine and on yr way.

Of course that changed recently as the entire country bought state laws into line with each other.

I did hate the humidity though. Heat I can handle, stinking 100% humidity I can't.

I swear Huey, if you get a chance to see Darwin, take it. It's worth a visit.

Mr Harsey!!! Knife blades of course. :D

I have been looking into unarmed defenses against knife attacks, and came across the statement that about 2 inches is long enough to hit most vital organs in the body.

No idea of the veracity of the statement, I did read it on the internet... :D

After having reviewed reports on the use of edged weapons for over two decades I will say, on occasion, this might be true.
Two inches does not take into account heavy clothing, protective gear or "reach".

There is much more to this topic and it will not be discussed here.

Sikhs, who have fought the muslims for over 450 years in what is now the India-Pakistan border have always carried a curved bladed knife as part of their religion.

With the turban, uncut beard, the knife is part of their culture BUT, it is not normal to see a sikh walking down the street with a blade. It is just not on anymore, unless its a religious festival. Otherwise, no decent punjabi folk carry one anymore except to leave it at home.

hoot72, that is one of the religions specified as being able to legally carry, and only by men.

The other is wicca. They are allowed to carry their athame to and from ceremonies.

This may sound funny, but the latest census shows there are stranger ones out there. For the first time, the religious status "Jedi Knight" had a great enough response to become statistically significant.

Aussies really don't like being asked questions by the govt. :D
