View Full Version : After 18E?
Though mostly I focus on getting ready for BCT, my eventual goal is to become an 18e.
That said, I have a general question for those of you who were 18e's, as well as those of you who are 18e's now.
What did/will you do after? If you went/plan to go into the civilian world, what types of jobs were/will be available to you with the Communications training you received? Or did you get a degree while you were in (or before) in something else and go that route?
Obviously this isn't something I will have to worry about for quite awhile. I am just curious.

Its late right now, so I'm going to be nice.
Worry about the 25m target.
Hopefully this will end this current thread.

Unless you can get to Frequency Managers course your 18E will get you a whole lot of nothing. I got out in 2004 and I became a Phoenix cop. What helped me was my weapons experience to include SOTIC, tactics, and civies think you are a real bad-ass if you were SF.

Its not so much your MOS that gives you opportunities on the outside, its your experience (schools, hands-on) that writes your resume.
As an 18E, sure you have the Freq Manager Course, which is a big help for an Echo if you stay in that field. But SOTIC, SFARTAETC, RANGER, HALO, SCUBA, OPB, & OIFs 1-20 (don't laugh... it'll happen). Plus Blackwater, Gryphon Group, blah-blah-blah-blah-blah. With any of these you could contract (the norm... especially for our NG SF brothers), start your own business, or just work at Wal-Mart and be a shopping cart nazi. Different strokes for different folks.
As long as you have earned the trust and respect of the guys to your 3 and 9 you can do whatever you want and be OK in my book.

Dude,
You should join NG SF. There's a unit in California, Colorado, and Utah. I know guys from AZ who commute to California (Los Alamitos) and to Colorado.
Unless you can get to Frequency Managers course your 18E will get you a whole lot of nothing...The State of California has a piece of Commo gear that would make you go HMMMM! It was deployed during Katrina to facilitate Commo between the different agencies operating within the AO. ;)

Take care.

[QUOTE].......and civies think you are a real bad-ass if you were SF.
And I think it is safe to say that people in the military also concur with that assessment! :D

I concur with Frost18e on both points, bein an 18E (in and of itself alone), qualifies you to be a civilian/former 18E. It just so happens that me and him now wear blue instead of camo. (I'm a fireman).
I also think the california rig looks like a rat rig on a different kind of truck...maybe there's new stuff in there....maybe not.

It is my belief...Whoever knows the most, eats the most. With the level of technology that is available today, especially in SF or SF support; take advantage of every piece of information that is available to you. There are companies out there that are looking for people with knowledge of their products and their use in the field. You can be a trainer for those products or future products, help in development and research, engineer new products, go for it. The great part is, with SF..you can be a gunslinger too if you so wish.

After 18E or even while you are still an 18E you come work with me as one of DoD's Finest Communicators! I still have 3X 18E slots open. Also I still need a 25B E-7and a 25W E-7. I am hoping to get a few more GS slots too.

You're a long ways off from being an 18E. Listen to Max TAB. Besides you have to get selected to attend the training first anyways. Don't let your thinking process get too far ahead. You will have plenty of time to assess your options if and when you make it. Your road is a long and fast learning enviroment. Keep that in mind before you start wandering mentally...
Best of luck in your future endeavors,

Well, you could become a HAM. Now that he FCC dropped the code requirement, getting a Gereral ticket should be a breeze for any 18e.

First...The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. You need to start walkin first.
Second...If you begin to think that a Special Forces Soldier is so one-dimensional that if there isn't a civilian version of 18E you won't find work, you need to reevaluate.
Third...As a retired 18E I can tell you that there is a ton of work out here either in emergency planning, contingency communications, field communications support, spectrum management etc...etc....etc.. You provide your own limitations.
Train hard:lifter , maybe you will eventually find out what it is like to BE an SF soldier.

This might be a far jump for for him. He started the thread stating he is getting ready for BCT and his goal is 18E. Then he asked what is there after 18E.

Focus on the 25meter Tgt like Max Tab said. When you get into SF and are on a team you can look at additional training and future assignments. Worry about time after 18E time when you have years under your belt and all shall come.
The key is BCT, SFAS, Q Course, Team time (Step By Step) The next thing you know will have Grey Hair and getting ready to Retire.
Good Luck and Stay focused.

I must agree with all the QP's above. Im an 18E with 8 months team time, 5 months in the desert with my team....and am still just a cherry trying to learn my job to the fullest. Looking far down the road is good...until you get hit by the car right next to you.
So this is your first time on a ODA ?:munchin

Yes, this is my first deployment with an A team. I am a cherry in this community, and have no wories, i know that i am. I did have a fun 15 months in OIF 1&2 as a standard grunt, and working with some 10th and 5th guys out of camp Kilo solidified my decision to try and become a QP. As an operator, i'm a newbie without a doubt. I would have responded sooner, but i was busy with some other things. I think you can all understand. Luckily, i found myself on a good team with a broad range of knowledge. I feel blessed.
One of the reason i found and joined this site was to pick the brains of those who are much more knowlegable than myself. I hope that i have never come across as pretending to be more than i am. I am here for advice and qriticism, anything that can help me become a more productive member of my team. If i am stepping on my second head, or dissapointing any long standing QP, please let me know.
