I can't hold this in any longer. I'm damn proud of my cousin who is a SGT in the Marine Corps. He will finally be coming home in the next few days from Iraq. For his actions there he will be the recipient of the Bronze Star.

Upon his arrival he (and I would suppose the other returning Marines from the Chicago area) will be met by an NBC news crew, escorted to Great Lakes Naval Air Station by IL State Troopers where all of us will be waiting. We *think* he will also receive his Bronze Star at this time. From all I have heard from my family this will be a hell of a time. I plan to take a lot of pics and will post some here if it is ok with him.

I salute you David. And I thank you publicly for all you do...as I do all of our Military everywhere. May God continue to keep you all safe in the palm of his hand.

Semper Fi.

While there is much inter-service poking and jabbing we all are proud of those who serve. It takes many and all jobs to keep the big green (tan) machine rolling.
In our family my generation split about 50/50 for the Marines and Army.

I'd give him a punch in the arm but you can give him a kiss from me to welcome him home.

LOL Pete, I'll give him a punch just for you. Same here, many in my family (uncles etc) were split Army and Marines as well.

Be sure he knows that are many people whom he might never meet who are nonetheless very grateful for his service and sacrifice. :lifter

Glad to hear that he is coming home and we wish him a hearty welcome home & congratulations to him on his achievments.

Would you please treat this fine Marine to a Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald Porter or their Burning River Pale ale "on me" please. If that is not available Goosle Island is always a damn fine beer too!!!

HEY RL!!!!!!!!!!!

Can I sue Mother Nature?

:p :D

Damn California rains....interferring with my cousin's homecoming. Tomorrow was "the day" they were coming in from Cali but due to all the torrential rains they can't charter a plane. Something about the backlog of flights the past few days. :(

Hopefully in the next few days....

The families, the friends, the news media...the other Marines milling around or standing in lines waiting for their Brothers...the Colors....the Navy Band....the IL State Troopers...the busses arriving...hearing the screaming throngs of loved ones waiting for a glimpse of their Marine. The sight and sound of a six year old little boy (the son of one of the NCO's) standing at attention and singing our National Anthem.

It was an emotional, fabulous and overwhelming experience to have the honor to be present as some of America's Warriors pulled in for home. Watching them file into the building and stand in formation, at attention until dismissed, brought a lump to my throat as I searched the faces of each Marine. I wondered about their feelings and emotions knowing that once again they went to the battleground to fight for us, and that they all came home. Together.

My family gathered around David, each of us waiting our turn to hug and hold him close and wish him a big welcome home. Afterwards we all went out for pizza, David's favorite place of course. Lou Malnoti's. All he could think about (besides returning to his family) was a slice of spinach butter crust pizza. LOL. When the waitstaff heard about this, they all gathered around for a picture and asked for a copy.

A woman and her husband were at the next table and they sent over some beer for him. Ironically she is a reporter for a local newspaper and did a little interview with him. Several others also sent over beer and many stopped to shake David's hand. He seemed a bit embarrassed by all the attention but handled himself very well.

One slight clarification, David's dad jumped the gun a bit. We talked to the Sergeant Major...paperwork and a recommendation for the Bronze Star has been submitted but it is not at this time a done deal. David said he was only doing his job, and he's proud to be serving...period. Evidently there was a mortar or RPG attack on their position, David rushed in and pulled out some of his Men including 3 Iraqi Soldiers. That is all I know, and I did not ask for any "details"...regardless of what happens we are all very proud of him and very happy to have him home.
