Au contraire mon frère; the article specifically reports that the protagonist of the story is a man.
The article clearly employed the possessive pronoun "his" when discussing the penis used to penetrate the plate. (which clearly looks like the standard 1inch/25mm diameter plate instead of the Olympic sized 2inch/50mm center hole)
Neither the weight of the plate nor the size of the center hole can be used to infer gender without the risk of offending plates of heavier weight, or barbells with greater girth. I would not be so presumptive of gender in such a highly charged storyline.
-You should notice that I intentionally remained clear of attaching a gender title to the plate because of the lack of information provided in the article. Simply being penetrated by the protagonist is not enough to infer the gender of that plate. In fact, the issue of consent was not mentioned in the article so the incident may have been consensual, or we may yet see sexual assault charges brought at a later date; we just don't have enough data to draw conclusions.

...ever - evereverever, infer gender when discussing topics that could so easily be misunderstood or more importantly, a topic that might trigger the sensibilities and sensitivities of the public at large.
