Cat 5 Irma now with 175mph winds.

Spaghetti Models from tropicaltidbits.com show the gradual shift to the west overnight.

It is important to also show the EURO and GFS ensembles from weathernerds.org. EURO has trended more to the west and the GFS more the east.

Still several members take Irma to possible east coast states so don't stop watching GA/SC/NC/VA.

It is coming down to an expected turn. When that happens is a big factor on who gets what. Hurricane Warnings are posted for VI/PR and the northern Lesser Antilles. Watches up for DR.

Keys and southern Florida should be getting a little anxious. Timing puts potential Irma there as soon as Saturday afternoon/night.

I will be going live at 9am eastern to talk more. Everything you need on Hurricane Irma on my site and APP: www.spaghettimodels.com

Echo the thoughts and prayers out to everyone in the path of this.

Don't get lulled into thinking you'll be alright. Take whatever measures are necessary to protect life.

I think with the rapid succession of two major disasters and several States ablaze the President should have an action plan in place over the next 24-hours. And that should include the military. I'd love to see the largest and best prepared humanitarian assistance and security organization the world over used for something other than fighting other people's wars. I have no problem with my tax dollars being used by the single largest salt/freshwater navy and vertical lift air capacity to reach places impacted by these storms.

The storms have not gotten worse nor are they bigger than the past but more people than ever live in harms way from them. We should have a better plan in place because you can't change Mother Nature only what happens after she's done. You also are not going to change human nature, only pick up the pieces and maintain security until security is provided again.

ODNT, sir, I agree. I'm a fire Captain and have my degree in Emergency Management, so know that there are legal limits on the use of US military, stateside; however, I would love to see the power of our military used to save our own people. FEMA and its resources are certainly stretched thin and local emergency resources will be overwhelmed, quickly. My department is 600 miles north of Houston and we have several assets helping with rescues and recovery there.

You are spot-on, too, that we have created much of our own misery. We live in places not suited to habitation (most often the poor, because it's cheaper or the rich, because they can). Some of the misery in Houston could have been prevented if government and insurance didn't under-write construction of homes in, otherwise, hazardous locations.

My prayers are with any and all of you that may be affected.

Any PS.COM members vicinity Gulf Breeze who would be available to help pack a Ryder truck Friday / Saturday for a few hours please PM me.

Don't know if the path will enter the Gulf, but having shoveled out of IVAN (the Terrible) and DENNIS (the Menace) I'd like to see if I can minimize effects of Irma if she shows up.

Take care of your family first, I'm just looking for single soldier assets or those safely north should the need arise.

Thanks.

NHC latest track shifts to the east some... as overnight EURO and GFS do the same. Still smack dab down the middle of FLA. Watching if continuing trend. FL to VA need to watch. Pressure down to 914mb with winds 185mph. Going live at 9am eastern with another post before then. www.spaghettimodels.com / Mikes Weather

Let there be no doubt, this storm is foretast at Cat 5.

The last Cat 5, to hit Florida, was Andrew.
https://www.google.com/search?q=hurricane+andrew+pictures&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjms8aptpDWAhWG1CYKHZnUDtQQsAQIOQ&biw=1367&bih=615

Andrew cut across South Florida, Miami to the West Coast.

If Irma drives North, the damage could be xx factor in scale..

You should be executing your egress plan now..

Warn them that the LEO's shut down the bridges when the winds hit 45MPH, for fear the trucks will be flipped and block traffic..

Also they block all vehicles with trailers with boats and campers, for the same reason.

This is interesting: List of Retired Atlantic Hurricane Names. (http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnames_history.shtml) Scroll down a little and check out the years ending in "5" column, 19 retired names. The "5" and "4" column have, by far, the most retired names (meaning the most destructive). The Sun is on an 11-year cycle.

I lived in Beaumont, TX, for Audry just 2 days before my 7th birthday.

I feel like driving my ass down there and picking her up. I hope that she is aware of the danger and takes shelter when she can. All I can do now is wait and see.

She is about 6 miles from the beach, I did tell her to make sure they head to a secure, concrete structure which offers better protection, and to bring necessities. They live in one of those manufactured home retirement communities. I am pretty sure those structures are not hurricane sound. My sister wanted them to come up to their place, and they refused. When I think of the many hurricanes I have been through it's amazing how they all seemed to have distinct personalities...The location might surprise one as well (Up along the Eastern Continental Divide in WNC) we got them coming and going from any of 3 directions. Once again the predicted path of Irma is heading for that area.

The one hurricane that was like an artillery attack more than any other was Hurricane Opal, Ivan a close second. Usually a hurricane will loose it's energy when it is no longer over warm water but Hurricane Opal had much of it's energy high up in it's top so not only did it slam in to our 3500' elevation with most of it's force still intact we could smell the salt water...a few residents even claimed shells were deposited. It's hard for me to see how high the energy is in Irma but very clear there is a lot of it.I see that energy is usually stated in Millibars but usually illustrated in an overhead view vs a cross section. The wind direction and water bands play a big part in how much destruction that area will get so 50 miles one way or another can matter...Prayers for those in the path and organizing for a trip just in case.

JJ years ago there used to be a power plant near the Big Fleet (country bar back in the day) and the Coast Guard Station.

Does Key West make it's own electricity or does it come from the mainland?

I assume most of the Key West cams will go dark when the power goes out.

My wife's friend, daughter and granddaughter made it up to Fayetteville and are staying with old friends - but the husband and SIL decided to stay and ride it out. At least the Hemingway Cats and their "servants" have got 18 inch limestone walls to hide behind.

No, Starting after Georges, 98 the power grid was completely rebuild. The towers, cables, & insulators were all Super-Sized. It comes from the mainland.

When We left in 2012, they were still beefing up the grid in the "rural" areas. My old house was 3 miles from US 1... During Wilma, they had power to the island in 2 days, but we had to wait a week..

I assume most of the Key West cams will go dark when the power goes out.

Not necessarily. Again, After Georges, county & state code was changed and most business that serve the public most have gens sets that support the business at least a week?? (I think it's a week)

If the walls hold. This is more storm than the Keys have had for a very long time.. The house is on the South side, only a couple blocks from the Southern Moist (sic) Point.. As it stands,, the surge may make it into the yard//

This storm is gonna leave a mark.

ETA: reiterate what I said earlier, on top of the nearly 10,000+ NG troops being activated to assist in the humanitarian response and security post storm. The President and Governors ought to be thinking of ways to bring in personal and equipment generic to the active duty side. The scale of coordination and air traffic control alone will quickly overwhelm local civilian capabilities.

Not really,, She will pick up more water and push more storm surge.

The Golf is shallow and WARM, out over 100 miles. (c chart) Irma may pickup strength, back to a 4 or 5..

At the current speed, Irma is going to rake Florida's West coast for at least 36 hrs..

They secured their boat as best they could and retrieved their converted bus and hightailed it AL. They left their security cam on and turned on the marine radio and monitored it through the night. About 0400 they heard a stay-aboard call that another boat broke loose and rammed his and he was taking on water. The CG said that there was nothing they could do and advised that he get to shore. He said that he didn't have any PFDs and the CG suggested a cooler or fenders. That was the last that they heard from him.

No damage, but no electricity. Good to see everyone safe!

That was what made me buy a 5 kw generator years back when a hurricane knocked out power for a couple of days in our Fayetteville neighborhood.

I swore then that I would always have the capability to run a window air unit, frig and entertainment center. I hate heat and humidity together and want a cool place to retreat to after cleaning up outside.

Of course - since I bought it we've never been without power for more than an hour. But it's there if needed.

All you without one watch the big box home stores starting in a days. People who bought one will be returning them and the stores will be selling them at a steep discount. But look it over real good and check the oil first.

I'm glad that it missed your house !!

look on the bright side... that's one less tree to worry about in the future... and you didn't have to pay anyone to cut it down

that is way to close for comfort - again - glad it missed

Close call - glad you had no significant damage. Looks like you'll have plenty of firewood after getting that tree broken down and the wood seasoned.

From a KW source:

MILITARY STATUS UPDATE
US Coast Guard Sector Key West

We received word Captain Janszen who stayed behind in Key West.

Here is the summary:

1. The military folks who stayed in Key West during the hurricane are all ok.
2. Key West has no electricity, running water, cell phone service nor emergency services. They haven't accessed Trumbo, Truman Annex or Sigsbee housing areas yet, but hope to do soonest.
3. They went to the Naval Air Station at Boca Chica and the airfield only sustained minor damage. Good news for getting people and supplies to Key West.
4. They still expect more storm surge. Several boats that were on mooring balls and at piers are on land. "It's definitely not safe to return"!
5. Some essential military personnel will be returning soonest without families to help with the recovery efforts.
6. All military families must wait for permission before returning.
7. He could not confirm if any bridges were out, and is waiting for that report himself.
8. The Navy PAO is attempting to get a video up on the NAS Key West and CG Sector Facebook sites as soon as possible.

Will post more info when I get it. #HurricaneIrma

Good to hear you dodged anything major... That tree is going to take some effort to get cleared though.

We already had our tree people out here. They'll need a bob cat to support the trunk. 1800 to remove everything and I can keep what ever I want for firewood. I think it's a bargain.

That was close! Is that a cypress?

Of all the things, that's what I was scared of happening. I have a pretty big oak close enough to do some damage if it were to go.

Live Oak. It was rotten at the bottom. Couldn't tell from the outside though.

Extremely glad those here seem to have fared relatively ok (less truck, oak tree repurposing, etc.).

A gen-set is a good thing. With the wife's needs now am looking hard at that as well, hurricane-country or not. (Blizzards & micro-bursts can take care of trees & power-lines too.)

I just heard from my sister, they drove down to Bonita Springs to check on my mom and said the place looked like a tornado went through their community. But they are fine, no electricity, no cell phone service, and not sure about their home right now. But they still won't leave and stay with my sister. My mother is acting like a child :o At least they are OK.

This is a long read but near the end they talk about Hwy 1 being blocked. Notice the POed folks statements about that's the last time they evacuate.

I think South Florida took the brunt of the storm. It probably absorbed enough of the storm's energy to keep Tampa safer. We got pretty lucky with the storm bands too. Seems God's hand was over us.

On a good note. Our power was just restored!

Just got word from the NG that our TF that does SAR (indiv first responder members from various counties) is on its way down there, along with a couple puppy handlers from the down the road by Volk ANGB. Imagine several other states have deployers to the area as well. Keep your wits about you & your feet under you.

Rita, good to hear your family is okay.

Thank you :o, and I am glad everyone else made it thru the storm just fine. Except downed trees, a smashed truck, and in my mom's case, scattered porch awnings, carport pieces, siding, smashed in door, and trash all over..LOL...

It is great to know that there are still people out there that show so much support, and concern for others, even if they don't know them. This is how it should be....and I am glad to know that you guys/and gals on this site never waver, and have always shown great respect, and you really care, and it is genuine and thoughtful. You guys are just awesome.....:D

Although in the hours after the storm swept through and devastated St. Martin, survivors of the French and Dutch island began picking up anything they could find...it didn't matter if it belonged to them or anyone. This is just a survival instinct...I found it you lost it.

Then in the days following, the impoverished local residents began picking up more than just the scattered property of others...they began looting and robbing people at gun or knife point. Breaking into stores and retail shops taking higher end items. Items that may or may not ever be useful. (Who needs a 65" 4K SHHD TV when you have no electricity, cable service or TV providers?)

It takes a week...before lawlessness begins and a society breaks down to the lowest common denominator.

The governments of France and the Netherlands have deployed fewer than 2500 (2000 French - 200 Dutch) military personnel to restore order and perform humanitarian assistance. The population of St. Martin before Irma was ~77,741. That relates to approximately 1:38 ratio of protector to protected and if the military and local law enforcement have the duties and responsibilities to distribute food, water, and shelter, well, there isn't much left for providing security and law enforcement.

Anyone of us who have ever been tasked with restoring order and rule of law in an impoverished country know it takes an overwhelming presence or use of force to control the situation.

When the local residents run out of food...the temporary and upperclass residents and tourists who have not left will feel the impact and wrath of those who had little before the storm and have nothing after the storm.

If St. Martin and the Dutch and French governments are not careful and make mistakes and missteps the wealthy will leave for their safety and the locals will be thrown bones from a hapless humanitarian disaster assistance program that ultimately be ineffective and inept.

St. Martin the next Caribbean Haiti.

It takes a week...?

SO far it looks like all hands are accounted for. We still don't have comms with most, but those with cell are relaying msgs.

Just found out a friends home is lost. He evac'd to Ft L and stayed with family. Looks like a couple chunks of internal walls remain. The "open water" in the lower left used to be two(2) 60ft lots, now completely washed away..

:mad::mad::mad:

NOAA has started posting the sat photos of the Key's.. You need to zoom all the way in. Still waiting on the lower Key's where the eye crossed,, also where I lived for 16yrs.. I suspect they will load other areas as available..

LOL...all I have to say is that at the next midnight street basketball game in your everyday druggy neighborhood, a lot of people will have nice, new, white Nike's on their feet.....:munchin

No, to be serious, that is just wrong. Those idiots have no care, or compassion for others in need; except their own. Yea, let's loot a Nike store so we look good in our freaking white sneakers .....Ass Wipes..Oh, and hey, let's steal a utility pole.....really? A freaking 30 foot metal pole on the top of your stupid redneck vehicle won't give you away? Moron Sucking Scumbags.....

Meth is a truly tragic drug. Stealing a metal light or sign pole. What in the EFF are you going to do with that?

"I Think I'll build a porch! I never done that before, but I really think I can do it!"

Ah the cauldron off humanity...

You bring up several things to think about, in general I'm reminded of a term used in white water rafting or kayaking..." The Yard Sale" When your craft flips upside down or tacos and all your stuff goes floating by that is called a yard sale. It seems there are just a few components when it comes to stuff, acquiring it, maintaining it, and securing it.

Similar to "Locks being for honest people" It takes a few other components to living in a society where the folks around you respect and look out for their neighbors. My understanding is there are already a fair share of dynamics at play in some of the locals you refer to.

I used to get upset about stories of the same houses being replaced storm after storm but honestly in places like Florida and along the coast lines I see it more like everyone is just camping...some are camping harder than others.

It is an interesting idea to juxtapose a week of the hurricane scenario with the physical. mental, and emotional expenditures of the survivors aka how many meals/shelter/security separate one from devolution?

When I work at the dive shop on BPK, we sold our tanks to an outfit in Miami for the going price of aluminum. I think it was around 35-40 USD a tank?? The Al used is very high quality..

There are a few people (long time customers) we give them to that make bells out of them.

Scrap companies require you cut it into pieces, which adds to the pain of scrapping them ourselves. Just added work to an already busy day.

Here are some examples of the bells and one of our instructors likes the steel tanks and is making BBQ grills with them.
