JBLM paratrooper dies during training exercise in Mason County
A Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier died Friday during an airborne training exercise in Mason County, according to a press release from the base.
The Mason County Sheriff’s Office reported that the soldier went missing near the community of Kamilche, south of Shelton. The base’s release said the operation occurred at about noon, and after a search of the area, the body was found at about 10 p.m.
JBLM identified the soldier as a member of the 1st Special Forces Group.
According to the release, an investigation into the incident is uderway. The name of the soldier will not be released until after next-of-kin is notified.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends and loved ones of the soldier involved in this tragic incident,” Col. Otto K. Liller, commander of 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) says in the release.
“We will conduct a thorough investigation into this incident, and we will do everything in our power to support the family of the brave soldier who died today.”
