Dominique Sharpton, 28, says she was "severly injured, bruised and wounded" when she stumbled over uneven pavement at the corner of Broome St. and Broadway downtown last year, according to a lawsuit.
"Uneven pavement"? Gee, I usually watch where I'm going.

There are companies in NYC that report sidewalk and street defects to the city. Lawyers pay them a subscription fee. Then when someone wants to sue the city for an injury and the defect was reported to the city they cannot claim they did not know there was a problem. Aside from being an ass and of questionable parentage I don't care how much she gets. The sooner the city raises taxes and chases out the last of the productive and tax paying people the better the country will be. It is sort of like cannibalism when Liberals eat their own.
So I can sue a city for tripping over the pavement? Think I am going to go for a walk, folks
Do you live in a cabbage patch?? People sue cities for that reason every day.
"Dominique Sharpton claims she fell in a crosswalk, which would make hers a “defective roadway” claim. The city received 774 such claims in the 2014 fiscal year alone." and that's only NYC.

Yep...just like people who sue because their coffee is too hot or they are texting while driving and run their vehicles into telephone poles which have been where they were when they were struck for years.
People can be idiots...many worse than others.
Bi***es always be trippin' - A common phrase amongst today's youth. Seems fitting in this case :D
She's just a chip off the ol' blockhead. It would be much worse if she had a cup of coffee in her hand at the time. The terrible thing is, she'll probably win. If I ever shut my finger in a car door again, I'm going to sue the manufacturer.

The epitome of our "suit happy" culture. I want someone else's money because I fell down.
That is wrong on every level. Doesn't matter who you are or if it is allowed or not.
I feel that Sharpton's daughter continuing her dad's legal extorting of money from American companies (and governments) should make lawmakers reconsider the state of American law.
snip...
After back-to-back years in which he took no compensation from the National Action Network, Sharpton pulled down $250,000 last year, the organization's federal tax filings show.
The payday comes even as his group, a Harlem-based nonprofit organization, lists $1.1 million in unpaid city, state and federal payroll taxes as of Jan. 1, the group's auditor told the Internal Revenue Service. At the same time, the reverend has three outstanding warrants totaling $988,000 in unpaid personal income taxes from 2002 to 2007, the state Department of Taxation and Finance says.
For more than a decade, corporations have shelled out thousands of dollars in donations and consulting fees to Sharpton’s National Action Network. What they get in return is the reverend’s supposed sway in the black community or, more often, his silence. http://nypost.com/2015/01/04/how-sharpton-gets-paid-to-not-cry-racism-at-corporations/
Al Sharpton has enriched himself and NAN for years by threatening companies with bad publicity if they didn’t come to terms with him. Put simply, Sharpton specializes in shakedowns,” said Ken Boehm, chairman of the National Legal & Policy Center, a Virginia-based watchdog group that has produced a book on Sharpton. And as The Post states, “One example of Sharpton’s playbook has emerged in tax filings and a state inspector general’s report. In 2008, Plainfield Asset Management, a Greenwich, Conn.-based hedge fund, made a $500,000 contribution to New York nonprofit Education Reform Now. That money was immediately funneled to the National Action Network. The donation raised eyebrows. Although the money was ostensibly to support NAN’s efforts to bring “educational equality,” it also came at a time that Plainfield was trying to get a lucrative gambling deal in New York. Plainfield had a $250 million stake in Capital Play, a group trying to secure a license to run the coming racino at Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens. Capital Play employed a lobbyist named Charlie King, who also was the acting executive director of NAN. Sharpton has said that most of the Plainfield contribution went to pay King’s salary. King’s company, the Movement Group, was paid $243,586 by NAN in 2008, tax records show.”

Without liability legitigation, cities, businesses, and individuals would have little reason to fix hazards on their property. The public has a right to expect cities to maintain streets, crosswalks, and sidewalks. If government officials, and workers did their jobs....the hazards would be eliminated in a timely fashion, reducing the number of successful lawsuits.
I reported a hazard in a crosswalk on government property to two different department heads. Nothing was done, until I had my lawyer threaten to sue them if they didn't eliminate the problem in 10 days. I found four other people who had fallen in that crosswalk, reported it, and were ignored.
I feel that Sharpton's daughter continuing her dad's legal extorting of money from American companies (and governments) should make lawmakers reconsider the state of American law.You want federal laws changed (at taxpayes' expenses) to stop one family so that private corporations can protect their bottom lines.
Instead of more corporate welfare, why not insist that corporations and government agencies improve their risk management, PR, compliance with existing laws, and ability to win cases in court? On their own dime, and their own time.
You want federal laws changed (at taxpayes' expenses) to stop one family so that private corporations can protect their bottom lines.
I really don't care about the bottom lines of private corporations. I mentioned two separate (although related) instances of a member of the Sharpton family gaming the system (public sector and private sector) in some way.
The elder uses race based extortion to extract money from corporations (and governments), the younger just sued a city for more money than I will ever see in my lifetime for tripping over a crack in the sidewalk.
The way I see it, elder sharpton uses the fact that he has the ear of the powerful elites and is able to scare companies into paying him for his silence. He contributes nothing of value to society, he is a leech, sucking real money out of the system in exchange for ... nothing. Now here comes his offspring, raised with his "values", starting off her brilliant life of ease and travel with a nice fat multi million dollar lawsuit. Again, sucking money out of the system in exchange for... nothing.
How much do you want to bet she was texting while walking which caused her to trip and "wound" her poor little ankle.
By suggesting that we take a look at our current laws, I can point directly to these two instances. Rand calls these people "looters".
When the morally ill gotten gains of people like this are obtained completely legally, how can we not think something is wrong? Are we not encouraging the public to find a crack in a sidewalk or an unmarked wet floor or a really hot cup of coffee over which to sue and live comfortably the rest of their life?
What does that say to those of us who go to work every day for a living?
Instead of more corporate welfare, why not insist that corporations and government agencies improve their risk management, PR, compliance with existing laws, and ability to win cases in court? On their own dime, and their own time.
I completely disagree with corporate welfare at all, as I learn more about farm subsidies and energy subsidies and shipping subsidies etc, I'm starting to disagree with most of that as well. If things just don't work, why should a taxpayer (without their vote really) be forced to prop a thing up just so it does. Tangentially, I ran across this article (http://fortune.com/2015/03/11/united-nations-subsidy-chinese-shipping/) that explains why its cheaper to ship something from China than from 5 states away.
As to the latter part of your question, I do not see the line between what you are suggesting and what "service" sharptons NAN actually provides. Would you clarify?
Without liability legitigation, cities, businesses, and individuals would have little reason to fix hazards on their property. The public has a right to expect cities to maintain streets, crosswalks, and sidewalks. If government officials, and workers did their jobs....the hazards would be eliminated in a timely fashion, reducing the number of successful lawsuits.

Have no problem with litigation. I have a problem with frivolous litigation, which this appears to be. Your statement that cities are responsible for maintaining streets sidewalks, etc isn't in dispute. What you should be able to do about it is. To me, the issue is should be able to sue because you aren't watching where you are going or can't pick up your own two feet. Perhaps. This is the reason I believe we should have a loser pays system. Sue all you want. If you lose, however, you are paying all the costs that the person / entity incurred (including lost wages / investments) because of your suit.
