View Full Version : SWAT officer with his rifle sight on backwards
In New York, we don't need to have guns to protect ourselves because we are protected by highly trained professionals. (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2294225/SWAT-officer-attracts-ridicule-s-pictured-rifle-sight-backwards.html)
I tried really hard to think of a charitable explanation for the above link before I posted but I could not think of one. If someone else can come up with one, I apologies to the above officer.

A cherry mistake MOO.
I wouldn't worry too much about that guy .... it's the fella with the shotgun that I'd be looking at.
If he let loose a shot in the position he's in, in that photo, he'd be in one rude wake up.
The standoff ended with the gunman killed and no one else hurt.
Stand off ended fine because of FBI's HRT. (http://sofrep.com/18202/sofrep-exclusive-fbis-hrt-kill-new-york-shooter/)
I am trying not to be too judgmental. I have done more stupid things in my life then I care to think about. I am grateful that there was no one around with cameras when I did them (that I know of at least). I even put peep sights backwards on a 10/22 once. I never noticed what I had done until I went to shoot the weapon.
But to my mind, putting a new sight on a rifle and test firing it goes hand and hand. I normally do one right after the other and I assume I am not alone. How do you go to hostage rescue with a rifle you have not test fired? And how do you test fire a rifle without figuring out that the sight is on backwards? And how do you get on to a Swat Team by being as big an idiot as Ape Man?
At any rate, trying to zero the rifle was how I figured out that I was an idiot with the 10/22. If the fella in the picture had tested his weapon maybe he would have figured out before the cameras caught him.
If your primary personal weapon is fucked up you are fucked up.

Cut the man some slack, he and his comrades are a highly trained, well disciplined, professional police force sent to protect you and your children in case of armed lunatic on rampage.

Aside from the backwards sight, is it possible this photo was staged?
Aside from the backwards sight, is it possible this photo was staged?
That was my hope. But I poked around and found the original source. (http://www.wktv.com/news/valley-shooting/24-hours-of-terror-in-Mohawk-Valley-ends-with-suspects-death-198285631.html) Upper right corner is the video the still shot was taken from.
Call me naive, but I don't think Upstate NY TV stations have stooped to Photoshopping stuff to make the local police force look bad. For one thing, I don't think the TV reporters would know enough to know which end was which even if they did want to make them look bad.
Now if it was CNN.....
This is one photo of the guy. (http://www.wktv.com/slideshows/Herkimer-County-Shooting-Spree-197841231.html?gallery=y&img=20&c=y)
And here is another. (http://www.wktv.com/slideshows/Herkimer-County-Shooting-Spree-197841231.html?gallery=y&img=18&c=y)
It would be nice if these where Photoshopped. But I am having a hard time believing that.

Amen. Notice the other idiot with his finger on the trigger of the shotgun while it looks to be pointing at the vehicle with a very interesting hold. Jesus their training office should be put up on criminal charges.
Exactly may thoughts.
What are the odds the only 3 incompetent individuals were captured in pictures behind the one vehicle?

When I saw this photo I wondered "what does he see?" So I pulled out my trusty AR and removed my EO-Tech sight. Through the correct side was the characteristic 1MOA dot surrounded by the the 65MOA circle. When I looked through the other side; I saw Elvis:eek:
Seriously, mounted in the fashion our fine officer has chosen, you have holographic nothing--a piece of empty glass to gaze through.

So the uninitiated wouldn't know, and would think that it's not on wrong?
Yes?

Aside from the backwards sight, is it possible this photo was staged?

I would expect the uninitiated to ask, given the sight is apparently not working. I would certainly expect someone in a hostile environment to understand how his weapon works and to ensure that it does.

NYPD: 9 shooting bystander victims hit by police gunfire
Published August 25, 2012
Associated Press
NEW YORK – All nine people wounded during a dramatic confrontation between police and a gunman outside the Empire State Building were struck by bullets fired by the two officers, police said Saturday, citing ballistics evidence.
The veteran patrolmen who opened fire on the suit-wearing gunman, Jeffrey Johnson, had only an instant to react when he whirled and pointed a .45-caliber pistol as they approached him from behind on a busy sidewalk.
Officer Craig Matthews shot seven times. Officer Robert Sinishtaj fired nine times, police said. Neither had ever fired their weapons before on a patrol.

Okie - I was thinking the same thing.
Well I've seen military guys do the same thing. Even with a Elcan!!
BLUF - Shows poor PCI and PCC by individuals and team mates. Those other SWAT Officers let him roll out like that. They all should have seen that the sight was on backwards.

Not that the sight being on reverse was staged, but the overall picture. The picture as is does not make sense. Unless they all just sort of got into a position for a camera op real quick. So much in the pic just looks wrong, I hope it was not from a real operation.

Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction...to me the two different photos look legit...I think that he was "as fucked up as he wanted to be"...

So, what's being stated with this thread? That HRT is incompetent? That their record of botched standoffs can now be explained?
:munchin
I am not sure what you are referring to. The the hero with the backwards sight was not HRT.
I was pointing out HRT involvement to explain why it went as well as it did given some of the people involved.

Nope. Not a staged photo opn but they are in position working the situation.......
The video supports it. Reality is a bitch sometimes.

Haven't seen the video yet, curious how the officer with the shotgun does.

Seeing the second photo above, it is clear that both dumbsh!ts without helmets are pointing their weapons through the inside of the Hummv (open hatch) so I guess their plan is to engage the bad person if he should so enter the street by first shooting through the windshield.
There is so much wrong with this group of clowns that I hope and pray they stay out of our elementary (public) schools.
Interesting, I check my rifle under controlled conditions and dirty the barrel at minimum every two weeks if its being used, more so for even a lot number change, let alone a good tumble.
After spending a weekend with an ex-pro football player whom they were interested in, sounded to me like they were quite exceptional at their job. Meaning: The probability of it ending well for you if they showed up would be zero, unless of course you gave up.
Must of been because of the sequester...
the shotguns are so they can fire two rounds through the door...
...THATS probably why things turned out so well.
At least he has his Iron sights up on the M-4.......

Perhaps that the militarization of municipal police departments which do not possess the resources requisite to maintaining officers' proficiency in small unit tactics is inappropriate and dangerous.
I think it's a more-than-fair point.

Hell, I've turned an M4 front sight post 180 degrees. Seemed to still work fine.
Front sight post is visible from either direction, an EOTECH isn't.
Stop trying to defend the indefensible. The guy was fucked up and thats what he was called on - I would do the same thing if he were SF.

FWIW, an earlier discussion of the militarization of LEAs is available here (http://www.professionalsoldiers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=667).
