View Full Version : Barbarian Knives
We got a sleeper around here who crafts fantastic knives.
I ordered a skinner from Barbarian a few months ago, and it butchered three pigs...still needs no sharpening...so I was pleased enough to order a fighter/pigsticker from him a while back, and I got it in the mail today-I can't say enough good things about the design, the sharpness and the "feel" of the knife.
I don't send pics (don't know how, and don't want to learn-my wife is the one who set up my avatar), but I might just screw with it this time so you guys can see this knife.
7 1/4-inch 1095 blade, sharp false edge, nonslip handle, Kydex sheath, and it is SCALPEL-sharp.
Thanks, Barbarian, for two indespensible blades.

Great news.
I think a picture of the unfinished knife was posted on the BB not long ago. Be nice to see finished pictures.
:munchin
lol I'll try to get around to it soon. :D

Liar, you said you loved burning shitters, you lived for it.... and that was only a couple of weeks ago here on PS.
Barbarian - is there a slight concave recurve on the long edge, or is that just a trick of the light in the pics?
What did you get the R rating up to for the blade, and is it differentially heated to make it more field worthy?
Nice work from the pics, you need to send me one to try to break. I will finish my first one soon, I hope, I need to find a good grinder with a 12" wheel to cut the racasso then get it heat treated, etched, polished, scales cut and mounted then sharpen it...

I'll buy your first knife sight unseen for a third of what I pay for Barbarian-built ones.

Yessir, it does have a slight recurve, but it's small enough so as not to make it a PITA to sharpen.
The steel's hardened to 58 RC for a little bit more flexibility and toughness. It's not differentially hardened. I don't have my own HT equipment yet, so I have to send it to Brad Stallsmith at Peters HT. He does absolutely top notch work, BTW. I can't say enough good about Brad's work.

I can't say that I recall ever seeing pics of these broken knives I'm always hearing about. How do I know you won't not break one and just use it for STUFF !!!:p

Lol. Roger that. :D
I'm guessing many of your knives used for STUFF are made by the good gents that frequent PS.com, in which case I'm not surprised at their fine quality. If that's indeed the case then I'd commend your taste in blades, Sir.

Here's the latest knife from nick trout's primal blades (that's me).
The blade steel is 1095 carbon, at 58 RC. The blade is, roughly, 3 3/4 inches from the plunge line to the apex.
I tried something new on this one. I've recently told a few folks that I don't make knife handles out of plain 'ole wood anymore. Though it looks great, it's just not durable enough for my satisfaction. So on this knife I used something called Dymondwood for the handle slabs, hoping it would be much tougher.
As I understand it, it's basically a type of plywood that's been pressed in resin. While it is tougher than just finished and oiled wood, it's still not durable enough to mount on an action knife, IMHO. Best to stick with canvas micarta or G10 for that. Works OK on hunting knives though.
Anyway, I'll stop flappin' jaws now and post pics. Hope you enjoy.

Here's one I finished recently for a member of PS.com. I'll leave it up to him whether or not to be identified.
The blade is roughly 3 1/2 inches of 154cm stainless steel with a sandblasted finish. Full flat grind.
The handle green canvas micarta.
Hardness is 58 RC, hardened by Peters Heat Treating Inc.
Thanks for looking.

Well I got this today. The fit and finish are better than most knives I have handled.. Seems very sturdy and fits my hand very well. I haven't had a chance to use it on "stuff" yet But I think I have a hog hunt comming up and I will post after I've had some time to use it.
Thank you Barbarian, great job. I'll be in contact for a second knife soon.

Here's one I just sent out. I don't normally do tanto's but I made an exception on this one. I should have waited 'till after the pictures were taken to oil the blade, though. Thanks for looking.
Blade: 5.75 inches- 1095 @ 56RC
Handle: Green Canvas Micarta (I like Micarta).

Thank you, Tony! I now have a new respect for those who make tantos. They are more difficult to do well, than I anticipated. I'm pleased with how it turned out though.

First order of team knives are boxed up for shipping.
Steel: CPM S-35VN at a hardness of 58 RC
Handle: Black canvas micarta
Blades are 5.5 inches with a 5.25 inch cutting edge, and are coated with KG Gunkote. The Team Sergeant (for the ODA) said to design the knives so they'll excel at stabbing, so the leading 2.5 inches are double-edged and shaped for penetration.
Thank you, Gents, for considering me, for the job. It is a GREAT honor, and professional pleasure.

Here's a quick sketch of a new wilderness survival-type design I'm working on. Shooting for something useful but compact enough to put in a bug-out-bag or backpacking gear.
All suggestions/criticisms welcome. If none object, I'll add more pics as the design develops.
