What do you guys think of both Kerry and Edwards bringing the VP's daughter's sexuality into the debates?

Full disclosure - I support lesbianism and the right to privacy for politicians families not running for public office.

I think it was in extreme bad taste to use the VP's daughter as an example. Furthermore, Mrs. Cheney spoke out about it and Mrs. Edwards sound bite is she must be ashamed of her daughter. WTF.

Edit....that comment was made by the Mrs. of the wannabe VP candidate

Oh yes...and if Mary Cheney is "fair game" then so is Mrs. Ketchup-face.

NDD's full disclosure policy... ah hahaha!

Not surprised as Edwards pulled the same tactic. But it continues to confirm my opinion of his character. I believe it's inappropriate to speak on behalf of anyone unless asked to do so (which I am sure she did not).

He definitely shot himself in the toe... :D ... was it enough to neutralize him... me think not but wish it were so..... :)

Edwards seems to be relishing his role in this election. He really gets in to the bashing.

During the VP debates, when VP Chaney chose not to dignify Edwards' comments by giving a response, that, in itself, spoke volumes.

During last night's debate, Kerry tried using the ploy of tugging at viewers heartstrings by referring to a conversation he had with his mother before her death. He said he was discussing with her the possibility of running for Pres. and her response was , "Integrity, integrity, integrity." Obviously, Kerry wasn't listening.

After the debates and flipping the channels to catch some of the spin the talking heads were doing, ( and I hate to admit I even stopped clicking long enough to hear what this man said), but Dick Morris, (who, as you remember, resigned in 1996 as one of Clinton's advisors when it was alleged that he let a prostitute listen in on his conversation with the President) was asked this same question.
His reply: "It was revolting."

It may be the only thing Morris has ever said that I agree with.

It was uncalled for, in poor taste, and most importantly, it was a diversion from the subject in an attempt to make the President and VP seem somehow hypocritical despite the fact that Cheney has been on record as against a constitutional ban for some time.

Hopefully, soon enough, he can join Al Gore in getting used to his new role as the most recent irrelevant man in America.

First off, Hello I am a college senior who has just enlisted with an option 40 contract and with hope and drive for the SF. I run cross country, and enjoy reading (even some of the dry stuff we are required to read for class).

What do you guys think of both Kerry and Edwards bringing the VP's daughter's sexuality into the debates?

at any rate I have grown to dislike the new height that poltical mudslinging has reached. I don't like either sides willingness to pull up dirt on the other. I suppose it is politics as usual but this election seems particularly nasty from both sides. The above is a perfect example. I feel the tooth and nail poltical brawls of this season divert attention from the problems we are all faceing together as a nation. We are fighting an elusive enemy and that dirt that gets brought to the fore during the election could be used by our enemies for explotation in the future term.

just my 2 cents

Hey there, easy on the college cracks. Don't be jealous just because I'm surrounded every day by thousands of gorgeous single women. I have to get some benefit out of living in this hippie-dip town. :)

I disagree with our new member here on the mudslinging. Not in that I think it should be there; of course not. But that it's anything new. Every single election people crop up and say, 'This is the dirtiest one yet!', but it's only because people tend to have very short memories. I'm sure many of you remember Mr. Dukakis being asked about his feelings on the death penalty if it were his wife raped and murdered. Or the famous 'Daisy' ad implying that Goldwater would lead us straight into nuclear holocaust were he elected. Or, hell, the taunt back in Cleveland's day 'Ma, ma, where's my pa?' (referring to a child he allegedly sired out of wedlock, which was met, after Cleveland's victory, with the retort 'Gone to the White House, ha ha ha!'). There's nothing new about your gripe: I'd be willing to bet every major election in history has had its share of people bitching that 'There's too much mudslinging nowadays! We should get back to the issues!'.

History repeats itself for those who fail to learn from it.

Good point DanUCSB

I am still young so I never thought of it that way... maybe I have been dumbed down by my tenure in slacktown...

Way out of bounds. sKerry should not have brought up Mary Cheney in the debate. Listening to his drivel, I was more like "WTF?" than I was listening to any of his subsequent crap.

Jackson? He was already following a road well-traveled ;)

We've had over 200 years of sleaze and insinuation about the private lives of public figures and their families. A political cartoon from around 1800, with Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemmings:

Yes I suppose there has always been politics "as usual." It is just wonderous though that we can continue this institution: I mean that sarcasticly  . I suppose it is a given, fights are fights. Not much we can do to change it and the unfortunate and out- of-line comments that arise with it. It is part of the game and most of us cheer for one side or another. I am Not trying to remove blame from the Democraps. But I am guessing that most of us would have an ideal of behavior for the poltician but we all know this is wishful thinking. So we continue the historic cycle that has been paved for us centries of the previous. We know the lessons of history but also know change is impossible.

I suppose that adds up to 4 cents total.

What I can't get over is how stupid politicians are. Its like if any normal person would make a list of all the things not to say in a particular situation, they insist on saying at least 3 of the top 5.

You're in a tight presidential race and you're going to run the risk of alienating ANYBODY by bringing in a family member?

Same with Trent Lott. I didn't think what he said was all that bad, but DAMN! Go to the fookin' birthday party, sing Happy Birthday and fill your piehole with cake. Stupid bastard.

They sure don't get elected on their IQ scores.

Teddy K is the one exception - drunks shouldn't be held accountable for what they say and he is always drunk.

After all the talk about Mary C. Yesterday on a talk radio show, the host ask how John E. feels now about his wife being FAT. Especially with all the current stats on
fat people.

Careful there, BMT. Edwards is a trial lawyer; if he decides his wife is too fat, he'll probably sue Frito-Lay for stuffing junk food down her gullet. Because, you know, it's never the individual's fault. ;)

Rumor here in Raleigh, where Edwards lives, is that he was unhappy with her about the weight gain, and was thinking about dumping her but felt that it would hurt his election chances.

Note how little you have seen of her till recently.

I felt sorry for her till she jumped in on Mary Cheney, now the fat cow can kiss my lily white ass.

If Kerry-Edwards loses, I predict that he will DX her within a year.

Just my opinion, but you don't bring up someone's family to make a political point. Particularly if you are talking about someone who has made a concerted effort to stay out of the spotlight.

He could have used Barney Frank, or the NJ Governor.

Instead he chose a family member of the opposing ticket. I wonder why....

More so, he could have used Dick Gepharts daughter, who is a vocal advocate, AND a personal friend of Vanessa Kerry.
