Demossville, Kentucky (CNN) -- The U.S. special operations teams that led the American invasion in Afghanistan a decade ago did something that no American military had done since the last century: ride horses into combat.
"It was like out of the Old Testament," says Lt. Col. Max Bowers, retired Green Beret, who commanded the three horseback teams.

"I would not allow myself to be the weak link. It's not in my nature, and it's not in any Green Beret's nature."
Thanks so much for posting the link to that story. Having tracked some of these early achievements from the get-go in my day-job I am so glad these stories are being told. Legendary? Yep. Legend? Hardly.
As they say, faerie tales start "once upon a time..."
The real stuff starts "Now this ain't no shit, but..."
Very cool indeed.
Another story with some good video.

"De Oppresso Liber!" Perfect! :lifter
NORMAN, Okla. — The first statue near ground zero to salute the heroes of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks will not depict a New York firefighter or policeman — but a lone U.S. commando on horseback in the Afghan mountains.
Titled “De Oppresso Liber” — “to free the oppressed,” the Green Berets’ motto — the 3-ton, 18-foot-tall bronze monument was forged to honor the troops who first responded to al Qaeda’s attack from its safe haven in Afghanistan.

I work a few blocks away, and will be working Veterans day, I'll see if I can head over there to get some pictures to post up.

I'll see what I can do, I'll try to keep my calendar clear and workload light so that I can spend a few hours there. If there are any PS.com members heading out there as well, give me a heads up. :D (we need a beer mug emoticon)
Well deserved, well executed,, and I hope well received by the sheeple... :lifter

I'm going to try to head there sooner rather than later also, although I am working on Veteran Day. I don't think the memorial is completely open to the public yet though. Where exactly are they putting this statue?
They are walking it down 5th Ave. with the Veterans Day parade and putting it across the street[1] from WTC, I'm thinking West St. WFC area, your guess is as good as mine...
I may have to wait until after Veterans Day to actually get some good shots.

Here are some photos from the parade. The statue will be displayed temporarily in the World Financial Center. Permanent location TBD, but likely to be in Liberty Park at Ground Zero.

The pictures were taken by one of the lawyers in our NY office who is working on the project for our client the Green Beret Foundation.
The statue is supposed to be at 1 WFC in the lobby, but I'm not sure if it has been moved and set up for display yet or not. It was unveiled in the Winter Garden so it might be there instead.
I'll be in NY next week and will try to get some photos myself.

“You will not find in all of history a group of men with more courage, with more conviction, with a greater sense of patriotism and more absolute outright damn skill than the men who are being honored by that statue,” said Biden.
.....
“You, our special forces, were our nation’s avenging angels,” said Biden.
Got that right! :lifter

Some of them were. Others were unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts. Myself and another guy on my team went up last minute to walk the statue through the parade and stand behind the VP during the dedication.
Good speech overall, and a very moving ceremony which helped me ignore the pain in my feet from wearing jump boots all over Manhattan for 14 hours....haha.
Some of the originals were also on fox and friends Friday morning.
Pictures inbound
Here are a few shots from the day.
A few more......
Had to do some pull ups outside the FDNY training center........
They constructed them out of WTC steel and have them outside the main building. The plate that was mounted at the base was very moving. They really make you take the time to pause and reflect on what it is that we are doing.
Enjoy!

The statue is scheduled to be erected across from the World Trade Center site in New York on November 11, Veterans Day. The artist rounded up these "horse soldiers" to share their personal stories and mission photos as inspiration for the 18-foot, bronze monument.

The statue is now installed at a temporary location at Ground Zero, should have a permanent spot later but there is a lot of construction going on so the current spot is temporary. It was unveiled at Ground Zero yesterday -- the parade was a year ago.
