I'm sorry for your loss - we didn't get another dog for 3 years after we lost our last one - like losing a member of the family. :(

Maybe this will help a little. ;)

My squirrel dog died last night.

Funny, I didn't think you'd own a chihuahua.... you seem more stable than that most of the time

Seriously, condolences on the loss of your dog.

I think a Blue Tick would suit you well for a replacement, they make pretty good squirrel dogs.

The gals took it a little harder than I did and have already rescued another Beagle from Joplin. We're scheduled to pick her up at 1330.

It's a dog's life, Bro. :D

Man, losing a good hunting dog is tough. I lost two old bird dogs the same day this winter---there is no best friend like a hunting dog.

I don't know if it will help, but once the family heals up from this, I know a bunch of folks that raise Mountain Curs. Good hunting dogs, and I am amazed at how smart those dogs are.

Sorry for your loss.

My mother's stay at home job before she went back to work was raising AKC Beagles. If you can keep them in the yard they make wonderful family dogs. Once they get the scent of something they like they're off and running.

Dusty,

I am sorry to hear about the loss of your dog. I know how it is. My last dog was fine at her last check-up at the vets and then two weeks later she could not even get up to go outside. Her body was riddled with cancer. I had to have her put her down. That was in '98 and I still cannot bring myself to get another dog. I would like to tell you that things will get better but I am no example of that. All the best.

I feel your pain. We've lost five over the last ten(?) years. We only get to enjoy their company for a (relatively) little time. And then you get to house train the next one. Good luck.

Anybody and everybody who hit a post on this thread knows the deal.

Not saying I wouldn't eat him if I was hungry, but...he was my buddy.

Really SORRY to hear about this! We lost our Mocha & Joe in the last couple of years.

They were litter mates, and had a good life, but I really know how you feel Brother!!

Take care.

Sorry about your loss Dusty. I recently lost my Golden Retriever. Casey was in my life for nearly 16 years...a lot longer than any of my ex-wives. I finally replaced her (Casey not the ex-wife) with a German Shorthair Pointer...life is looking up...

In the next life, I'm coming back as Dusty's dog.

Un-limited amount of critters to chase, catch or retrieve. House full a beautiful gals to rub my tummy and scratch behind me ears.

In return, I will faithfully follow, stay close to knee on walks without leash, bark at strangers, chew the ass on any skunk that enters the yard, sleep faithfully at the foot of the bed of my mistress, growl at Dusty when he makes moves on her, but will huddle tight in a 360 security position when its just he and I and keep his feet warm on snowy back packing trips.

I will not beg or whine at the dinner table, but will gently take small amounts of meat, peas, bread, or any vegetable the kids/grandkids do not want. I will gladly eat the same food every day and not complain. I will remain ever ready to do what ever task is required of me.

I however, DO NOT do windows, except with my nose.

Sorry to hear, Sir. I know how you feel. My german shepherd died back in march, after 11 years of friendship. He had cancer. Turned off bad one day, and couldn't even walk.

I couldn't get an answer when I called the after hours clinic. Had to put him down myself. He was a damn good dog.

My sympathy, Dusty. I had to put down an English Cocker a few yars ago when he got eye cancer. He had a great nose and would eat peanuts with me, cracking and spitting out the shell. The vet talked me into not being with him when he did it. I will never do that to one of my dogs again. When the time comes, I will hold him...

I witnessed a hit and run last year. A truck wiped out a good looking yellow lab. I stopped long enough to check on the dog, realized he was hurt bad, broken back and hip. I gently picked him up and drove him the the nearest vet hospital. We attempted to contact the owners, listed phone number on the tags reported, "no longer in service".

Vet looked at me, I looked at him, we went 50/50 on splitting the x-ray costs. Photos confirmed the broken back. We then moved onto putting him down.

Calls were made to all docs in the area. When we finally found the owners, two days later. They were appreciative of me taking him to a doctor. I told them the bad news. When asked if he went alone or with someone holding him, I proudly reported he went lying in my arms and left this world peacfully. It made them feel better knowing.

If given the choice, I'd go out the same way, but I'd like to miss the truck.

Richard,

You are correct...death of a child would be impossible to handle...I could not even begin to understand the pain and incredible loss. I have not been blessed with any children, but still could not imagine the loss of a child. My dogs are my children and I am lucky to have 2 beautiful dogs with me today.

Dan

I hope you never experience the loss of one of your children.

Sorry for your loss. I took over a dachshund for my sister who could not afford him. I am not a small dog guy but he won me over quickly with a lot of intelligence and various quirks. The dog seem to be ashamed if you took his collar off. When we had to put him down because of a disc problem it hurt. I still have a hard time thinking about getting another dog.
