When it comes to the secretive cadre of cyberwarriors who are asked to attack in cyberspace, Hartman sees many similarities between the geek squads of the future and today’s commando units.

We need to send Mr Hartman a geek & a QP. Each to kick him in the balls,, then get his impression(s) on their similarities.. :D

This will make the World of Warcraft XX crowd very happy...

Someone needs to (physically) breach that data-center in hostile territory, and I don't see any of the WoW crowd stacking up, so, while the goals are the same(get in, get data, get out), the methods are very different, don't see too many similarities there. Remember, in information security, there is no security without physical security.

On a side note, FID with a bunch of servers would be pretty much painless, no duffels of cash/guns and tribal politics, just a good rootkit or two. :D

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that any quality "cyberwarrior" isn't wasting their time with video games, but rather spending it on skill-building and research.

Notwithstanding rhetoric regarding who our "future commandos" will be... what are the two offensive tenants of Unconventional Warfare??? Sabotage and subversion. I know there have been attempts to remove these terms from the UW lexicon, but I still believe that these tactics are crucial to our ability to conduct guerilla warfare. Times have changed since WWII though and we need to adapt... the most critical structure may no longer be that railroad substation, but a computer server or network! Subversion - how can we most effectively psychologically undermine the strength of a foreign government? Well, the most immediate and widespread effects may be achieved through the information superhighway.

Read this...
http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/national-security/us-cyber-approach-too-predictable-for-one-top-general/2011/07/14/gIQAYJC6EI_story.html

Our cybersecurity is on its heels - there is no offensive consequence that we offer. So, not only can we use these guys for our mission, but if the USG wants to prosecute targets that are attacking our networks, a precise small unit raid may be worth conducting.

I'm not arguing for placing another regiment or battalion under SOCOM/USASOC, but SF should definitely be working with these guys.

I don't think that there is a positive correlation between WoW players and somehow being very proficient at network engineering and programming in the mission of defending government servers and the data in them. I mean yeah the way the author tried to compare them to SF is wrong but would you expect anything else from a center that does have the knowledge on what you guys actually do?

I just don't think that the picture that is being painted on this thread ( even though it's funny ) is not really an accurate depiction of the type of people who would serve in the Armed Forces in this capacity.

Realize that many jokes in life are dependent on the satirical use of caricatures and stereotypes. In reality, I've known team guys that play computer games too, albeit not obsessively. And, I know computer gurus who never play any sort of video games and instead opt for physical outdoor activities. And as far as you saying "would serve" is wrong... folks that do this work are already serving.

Head,

Of course I know that those jokes were not intended with any malice but it is still the wrong picture to paint for other people looking at this forum and the perception would be that people that serve in this capacity should not be taken seriously and are just bunch of guys that shout warcries during games online with other people.

She is! At first glance, I thought they were ALL chicks... and the could still be the truth of the matter... depending on today's current definition of 'chick'!
