They are saying it was a US military action that killed him (NBC)
Supposedly killed a week ago by a bomb - have been waiting to get DNA tests back.
I hope that's the case, but in something like this ......
I DON'T WANT TO HEAR BIN LADEN DEAD ....
I WANT TO SEE BIN LADEN DEAD !!!!
I am hoping this is the right place to post this. But it is 10:00 pm on Sunday night and the President is about to make a speech. Sources are confirming that Usama Bin Laden was killed by a US bomb a week ago and DNA testing came in proving that it was in fact him.

We sent American men deep into Pakistan, killed him with an American bullet, secured his body ourselves, and extracted with no casualties, or even any collateral damage to innocents.
This sounds like as flawless an operation as anyone could have dreamt of, after so much sacrifice over so many years hunting this roach.
What a testament to the superhuman skills and professionalism of all of our SOF, hardened by so many thousands of missions, at such a furious tempo, over the last 9+ years.

That's not it, it's just a marker somebody put up as a joke. But that is the right city. Here's an article with some more info on the raid itself: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/42853221/ns/world_news-south_and_central_asia/ The actual bin Laden compound was built in 2005, and most of the public imagery of Abbottabad is from 2001, with some taken in early 2005.
According to several articles I've read, fighters on the rooftop of the compound opened up on the helicopters with small arms and RPGs before the choppers landed. One helicopter was too damaged to make it back out and they blew it in place before exfil.

Here is what I found on Aljazeera site regarding OBL death, as it was reported from Stratfor Global Intelligence.
Main points.
-OBL was hiding in Abbottabad 50 km northeast of Islamabad ( the article say its 56km) , and 150 km east of Peshawar.
-OBL was hiding in a new building ~5 years , that thought was made for his hiding.
-Operation took place around 0100-0200 (GMT) Sunday.
-Operation tooK 40 minutes, ended by the killing of OBL, his Son , and body guards.
-The article mention the use of helicopters in the attack, and the down of one.

Treat his body with respect. I am sure the professionals who killed him treated his body with equal parts of disdain and respect. We are better than them and it is time to show it.
We should send his body to Saudi Arabia well taken care of (minus a couple dozen holes) as a two part message:
1) We are better than you and always will be
2) Don't fuck with the U.S.A!
Well said brother...well said.
Thank you to all the QPs, and Soldiers who made this happen! Great day fo the miltary, on to the next target. :lifter
I find it interesting.
For years his videos and voice tapes were getting worse and worse. That was one reason many thought he was dead and the tapes spliced together.
So he's been living in a compound outside Islamabad for the last 5ish years - with servants, family and Pakistan Intelligence Agents?
1. He couldn't put out a quality tape and had nothing to say the last three months?
2. The next question is "When did the US find out his location? How long have we known?"
But congrates to the troops involved.

I think the death photo circulated earlier is a fake. It looks fake and there's a link on msnbc about it being a faked photoshopped pic from one of his old ones. We'll eventually see the real thing.
So many Americans are thinking, "yay we got him, the wars over". As we all know that statement is nowhere even close. This is just getting started.
If this is true... then his Grave cannot turn into a shrine like Elvis'
He sleeps with the fishes.
As much as I'm glad he's dead, as are a lot of people over here, it doesn't change much, if anything. Figurehead or not, it's nothing but a PR victory. There are still many more just like him to deal with.
Where we go and what we do - our language and our behavior - advertises who we are.
The world is inarguably better off without the likes of an OBL - but there are many others standing patiently in the line of psychotic oppressors patiently awaiting their chance to bring the same levels of misery OBL sought to bring us all.

U.S. Kills bin Laden in Intelligence-driven Operation
American Forces Press Service (DOD)
An intelligence-driven U.S. operation in Pakistan killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden yesterday, President Barack Obama announced in a nationally televised address from the White House late last night.
“Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan,” Obama said. “A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability.
“No Americans were harmed,” he continued. “They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body.”
Obama noted that bin Laden had been al-Qaida’s leader and symbol for more than 20 years and continued to plot attacks against the United States and its allies.
“The death of bin Laden marks the most significant achievement to date in our nation’s effort to defeat al-Qaida, yet his death does not mark the end of our effort,” Obama said. “There is no doubt that al-Qaida will continue to pursue attacks against us. We must, and we will, remain vigilant at home and abroad.”
The president revealed that shortly after taking office in January 2009, he ordered CIA Director Leon E. Panetta to make bin Laden’s death or capture the top priority of the U.S. war against the al-Qaida terrorist organization.
“Then, last August, after years of painstaking work by our intelligence community, I was briefed on a possible lead to bin Laden. It was far from certain, and it took many months to run this thread to ground,” he said. The president said he met repeatedly with his national security team as information developed indicating bin Laden was at a compound in Pakistan, and that last week he determined enough information was available and authorized the operation.
The president emphasized that the war against al-Qaida is not a war against Islam.
“Bin Laden was not a Muslim leader,” he said. “He was a mass murderer of Muslims. Indeed, al-Qaida has slaughtered scores of Muslims in many countries, including our own. So his demise should be welcomed by all who believe in peace and human dignity.”
Counterterrorism cooperation with Pakistan helped in finding bin Laden and the compound where he was hiding, the president said.
“Indeed, bin Laden had declared war against Pakistan as well, and ordered attacks against the Pakistani people. Tonight, I called [Pakistani] President [Asif Ali] Zardari, and my team has also spoken with their Pakistani counterparts. They agree that this is a good and historic day for both of our nations, and going forward, it is essential that Pakistan continue to join us in the fight against al-Qaida and its affiliates.”
The president praised those who worked to find bin Laden and those who carried out the operation that killed him.
“Tonight, we give thanks to the countless intelligence and counterterrorism professionals who’ve worked tirelessly to achieve this outcome,” he said. “The American people do not see their work, nor know their names. But tonight, they feel the satisfaction of their work and the result of their pursuit of justice.
“We give thanks for the men who carried out this operation,” he continued, “for they exemplify the professionalism, patriotism, and unparalleled courage of those who serve our country. And they are part of a generation that has borne the heaviest share of the burden since that September day.”
Former President George W. Bush released a statement after he received a call from Obama:
"Earlier this evening, President Obama called to inform me that American forces killed Osama bin Laden the leader of the al Qaida network that attacked America on September 11, 2001. I congratulated him and the men and women of our military and intelligence communities who devoted their lives to this mission. They have our everlasting gratitude. This momentous achievement marks a victory for America, for people who seek peace around the world, and for all those who lost loved ones on September 11, 2001. The fight against terror goes on, but tonight America has sent an unmistakable message: No matter how long it takes, justice will be done."

Agreed, but not without a measure of poetic justice...
It is the high road that has a built in tribute to the Americans gallantly responsible for his death. Since SEAL's were involved, they fittingly gave him a burial at sea.
Is it too good for him? Of course. IMHO, it is more about who we are rather than the [no words foul or obscene enough] ass he was.
All the reports I have read report that he was shot at least once in the head.....maybe I missed it but I saw no holes in his dome. Feel free to correct me.

The question now becomes how this event is used politically in the next 18 months.
FWIW, I agree that the president deserves credit for authorizing the raid.
As for the political dimensions, I wonder if the White House set up the Birthers and others who question the president's citizenship. While some spent the last few days showing what they think they know about PDFs, the president was crushing an enemy of the civilized world.
In any case, I think three significant political consequences are that the White House is in a stronger position to argue that GWOT is primarily an intelligence/CT affair rather than a conflict centering around UW. Second, the president has shown that he can make tough decisions and deliver. Third, Panetta can now claim to be more than a political hack.

... Second, the president has shown that he can make tough decisions and deliver.
With Respect,
I very strongly disagree that his long term record of hesitancy and inability to commit to a decision or plan or strategy or policy has been counteracted by what for a President is an easy win. He has no skin in the game on this one. If it works out well, he grabs some popularity rating points, if it doesn't, well, he was just following the path that previous Presidents had laid.
While I celebrate with the rest of the country today, and am excited that our military in general and the special operations community in particular gets to chalk up a huge win, I can give Obama no more respect than I could last night before this news came out.
We still have a horrible unemployment rate, we just raised the debt ceiling, we almost had to shut down the government over budget issues, we still have Obamacare to deal with, we have car cars and drug czars and gun czars and air czars. His horrible track record has not gone away.

I seem to remember another raid conducted back in 1970 in the suburbs of Hanoi, including a "downed" helo in the compound.....uncanny resemblance!:D
As my Mom used to say about such situations, "Good riddance to bad rubbish."
Speak for yourself with that PC BS, Bro. I say flush that MF out with the rest of the shit. I hope the sharks eat him and shit him out. Then smaller fish in succession all the way down to the plankton.
Such unnecessary hyperbole only lends itself to feeding our enemy's "narrative" and makes us appear further from our openly declared national ideals than we are...or should be. IMO those ideals remain a valid goal and should not be treated by any of us like some sort of antique piece of furniture which is nice to talk about and show off, but too fragile for us to use.
Credit for what, sitting behind a desk making a decision which by all rights should be made at the tactical level to begin with...
Invading a sovereign nation should never be a "tactical level" decision.

Let's see ..... We watch movies in remembrance of certain events, such as ....
December 7th .... TORA, TORA, TORA
June 6th ..... Saving Pvt Ryan and The Longest Day to name a couple
Could we add this movie to the list ??? .....
May 1st ..... The Men Who Stare At Goats .... (You know Mr. Weaton and his crew had something to do with this ...... right ???) ;) :munchin

I'm just wondering if we will ever get to see a photo of his dead body with the shot in his head, that has not been photo shopped.
Credit... Credit for what, sitting behind a desk making a decision which by all rights should be made at the tactical level to begin with... Give me a break!
It was the men involved in the execution of the operation (to include the support personnel) who crushed the enemy, not the president.QP Surgicalcric--
With respect, there's a difference between giving credit and giving praise. (If the announcement had come during Bush the Younger's administration or during a McCain presidency, what would be our view of the president's role?)
As QPs Pete and Richard have suggested, the president could have done nothing. (Or, equally problematic in my book, he could have sent the Air Force.)With Respect,
I very strongly disagree that his long term record of hesitancy and inability to commit to a decision or plan or strategy or policy has been counteracted by what for a President is an easy win.
His horrible track record has not gone away.Hand--
I like your analysis. However, please do note that I was answering a specific question. The question now becomes how this event is used politically in the next 18 months.

The news says it was ST6/DevGru. But we all know the 160th brought CAG in for this hit : ) I guess it's good PR for Navy recruiters across America today. I'm surprised the Marines haven't claimed they fired the kill shot.
News flash...This wasn't an invasion...
invasion (noun) - an act of attacking and entering the territory of another country
http://www.politicsdictionary.com/definition/invasion.html
We invaded a sovereign nation's borders w/o their knowledge or permission to unilaterally conduct a ground raid upon their territory - undertaking such an operation is a violation of their internationally recognized sovereignty, an invasion of their territory, and - IAW our doctrine - a strategic level decision.

Coming from such a respected member of this board, that is a huge compliment. Thank you. And in re-reading after your clarification I see that I completely misunderstood your response.
You are exactly right.

Has it been confirmed that the Pakistani government was unaware of this op, or opposed it?

Has it been confirmed that the Pakistani government was unaware of this op, or opposed it?
In my experience as an armchair intel analyst sitting safely in my ergonomic office chair halfway around the world wouldn't it seem likely that some small elements of the Pakistani government and/or military were aware of the operation?
I'd wager that the ISI was taken by surprise, or at least the Al Qaeda friendly elements...
It's a touchy enough political climate to suggest that perhaps one thing was stated to the press and that it didn't match reality. We'll never know -- not until it's all declassified decades from now.
Has it been confirmed that the Pakistani government was unaware of this op, or opposed it?

I do not believe so...
Wasn't this raid launched from a Pakistani Airfield as was reported last night? There seems to have been some level of collusion here and far from having met the definition of an invasion....
Just think of all of the time, effort, lives and money that could have been saved if "Slick Willy" had given Billy Waugh the green light when OBL was in Tora Borah!

Heard on TV this am that they were informed when it was over. Not sure that is sufficient confirmation for you, though. :)

Most of the reports I've heard were that they came from Afghanistan.
Today...I am going to bit my tongue on that :munchin
All that matters is that at this brief moment in time people in the streets of the USA are jubilant and proud and feel Justice has been delivered in person by a US Citizen.
Well done Gentlemen!
You don't have to pm or just post here ...I stating my opinion that its all contrived .I am in total agreement with everything TS has been saying for awhile now ...:)

Mr. Obama called President Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan to tell him about the strike after it was set in motion, and his advisers called their Pakistani counterparts. “They agree that this is a good and historic day for both of our nations,” Mr. Obama said.

The term "plausible deniability" comes to mind, in case something went wrong, or public reaction was poor.
Of course, I know nothing official beyond what you have heard.

Sir, are you referring to possibility that the Pakistani's were not informed of the raid, the burial at sea of OBL, how it was announced here by Obama or something else that I am not picking up on? Just trying to get a better feel for the whole situation in regards to the big picture.
I'll believe it when I see his long-form Death Certificate. ;)

This sure helps both countries put the Davis thing behind. Pakistan (ISI) officially has egg on their face. It sure will help us move forward.
This was planned for months and it is verified and true.
I should have not poo poohed the moment last night but I am always skeptical of this President.
However, this is an awesome victory for our Military, Intel services, and President Obama and offer my praise for a mission well accomplished.
Now let's get Zawahiti - the finger wagger. We know where he is.
We got alot of intel from those computers. It should be hell on earth now for Al Qeada.
Fast and furious shalt we pursue - and get our guys back home.
