View Full Version : 3 years out? Back to Basic
This weeks Army Times has an article in the Your Army section (pg 20).
3 years out? Back to Basic
Trying to get in the Army after being out of any service three years or more?
They treat Army and Marine basic/boot camp and Navy/Air Force Special Ops Training as the same. Less than three years good to go - over three years back to basic.
4 week Warrior Transtion Course established 6 years ago to help with Blue to Green is out as of this past Jan 1st. (see above about basic)

I wonder what they'll do with prior service Guard soldiers who have rank. I went through WTC as a SFC and all the guys heading to SFAS were fellow NCOs. All of us had been drilling with our units prior to attending WTC too.
Personally, the training at WTC could have been done at the unit-level.
I will admit there is a steep learning curve going from a sister service to the Army though. The cadre didn't really appreciate my first time calling cadence. I learned D&C from Marines.
I wish I could go back. They'd never let me try to go through basic, but maybe I could teach the young'uns how to read buffalo shit.
They've been making it harder to get back in for the last few years. Especially with the upcoming downsizing. They're also talking about taking the QMP process seriously, which seems to have been broken for my entire military career.

I'm kind of interested to see the figures on how many people actually went through basic training twice just to get back in again.
Kind of masochistic. :p

Three years out?
I know I could still place an M60 into firing position, draw range cards, fuse a claymore, conduct a successful patrol, call for fire, engage targets at 350M, (open sights), teach assembly and cleaning of an M4, conduct JM duties on aircraft or DZ, load a hard/soft duck for drop, issue weapons to G's, issue cash to assets, retrieve cashe from air drop, write a msg, reply to a msg., get my team beer, pour my CO a drink, (scotch and soda), tell a joke, write a report, shake out my ruck, write a letter to my girl, write another letter to another girl, call a friend, climb a 50' rope, run 6 miles, ruck 20 miles, run another 10 miles, ruck another 12 miles, call my mom, my sister, a buddy in the 180A course, (tell him he's an ass), call my dad. All of this in a 24 hour period.
Tell me, what Basic trainee could do that?
I'm with Dusty, shit, it's tough getting old.
Dusty,

Horse shit is still my favorite.

But having to go thru Basic after a three break, really?
I'd opt for at the unit level, 2 week, round robin, task orientation(s).
Place NBC mask, load weapon, shoot, run, ruck, swim, APFT, get a hair cut, (maybe), dog tags, medical record review, shots in ass, etc. Load truck, unload truck, load aircraft, jump into Infil scenario, no, jump or fast rope into Cleveland, Ohio, aid in rescue efforts of women/child, and the old who are caught in Japanese style Nuclear danger areas.

We haven't started it yet...so I didn't include it. But yeah...that one too.
Doing the transformation bootcamp program 0530-0630 every M-W-F makes me wish I was 19 and going through BCT again. ;)

From my present location, this is all just silly talk,,,,,
When you start talking about Chai I'll jump back in. :D

I agree completely. If they can perform tasks to standard that is all that should be required. Maybe a quick update of the items mentioned by 1stindoor and assign them to a unit. Get them a little technology update for changes that may have occurred and they should be back up to speed in just a few days.

Wet dog,
Sounds reasonable --- but NO Cleveland, Ohio – there are some places so bad that people won’t go :D

O.k., when I ordered Chai this morning, a conversation about "M60's" began with the coffee Barista.
I said machine gun, and don't get the firing pin installed backwards, it won't fire.
Whats an M60?
You know: A M-60 machine gun that was mounted or hand held, belt fed, air cooled, 7.62, .30 cal, covering fire that would hang out the door of a UH-1 A, B, C, D, M, or N model Huey. Which for you younger folks was a 2 bladed semi-rigid, under slung, 1400 shaft horsepower (single engine version) fling wing helicopter developed by Bell Helicopter Co. 1958 and whose controlling interest was owned by Lady Byrd Johnson. These helicopters provided transportation for up to eight combat loaded soldiers that were leg mounted, air or aqua deliverable human machines of destruction (likely transporting an M-60), that were C-ration or LRRP fed, beer cooled, LPC transportable, women satisfying studs that could ruck all day and night and then run when they got tired of walking for another 20 K so they could catch a ride home in the aforementioned Huey so they could meet the needs of the aforementioned women that would be waiting for them. Truly it was a great weapon, the M-60. Not to be confused with the 158,000 lb pig iron machine found in the Armor community. :D So if the young combat soldier can meet task standards I am not sure a complete recycle is required for their long term improved proficiency.

I'll see your M60 and raise you a 240B.
I saw a Huey in a movie once, they looked fun. I think they used them when Washington crossed the Potomac, but I can't remember the whole show, kinda fell asleep. :D Two blades, four blades, they can't keep up with a UH-60 , and you can pack more beer on a Black Hawk.
Beer, it's the defining equation breaker,,,,
