Does anyone have a hog trap in the Tampa area that I can borrow? Found some rooting in yard. When I get one (hog) I can divide the meat with the trap owner.

Can't bowhunt there?

I could, except I don't have a bow, and don't foresee getting one too soon. (Light bulb moment) I reckon this is a good chance to try my bow making skills. Great idea! Thanks.

Chief,

Not a good idea. Tampa, like most metropolitan areas have tree huggers that LOVE to drag knuckle dragger's into court for cruelty to animals.

Best you contact the local critter behavioral modification thugs,, The guys with the permit..

I can see it now:

Squid caught poking porker in the back yard,, Video at 7PM

Definitely good advice for a city slicker. Fortunately I live in the boonies on four acres. Taking hogs is legal all year round and common practice out here. Having said that, I should probably hit the human terrain see if any of them have a trap.

Yes, bow hunting is legal, even at night.

In that case, I look at your situation as an opportunity, not a problem.

Better check for tatooing first - somebody might've left the gate open and the Buccaneers cheerleaders got out again. Glazer hates it when that happens. :D

Absolutely, I've actually been waiting for one to enter my property. I've seen hog sign all over around here, especially in the nature preserve across the street, where hunting is illegal. But once they enter private property it's fair game. I thought about using a snare (cheap, effective) but my dog frequently escapes from her kennel, but a cage trap I think she would be alright. I need to think on it a little bit. A shotgun could be the ticket, 00 buck, but I'm reluctant to shoot with the cow fields surrounding the yard. I think a bow or cage trap would be the best options. If my dog were older, I'd get her in on the action, and then stick the hog with a knife.

That underlined part takes a good bit of training on the dog's part and if you love the critter some armor. I'd get a bow or crossbow (if legal in your AO) practice often as the good men above me stated.

Look at the series Hogs Gone Wild (http://dsc.discovery.com/videos/hogs-gone-wild-videos/) there are several types of traps used.

Well, right state but wrong school...actually, the olde joke here in Texas goes someting like this:

Q: Why did Texas A&M have to install artifical turf in their football stadium?

A: It was the only way to keep their cheerleaders from grazing on the field at half-time.

And so it goes...;)

Man that sounds good. I'd love to have some of those recipes. I could make some good gumbo or jambalaya with wild sausage.

These are the two my son and I got last year, each close to 200 pounds. We just finished eating them, time to restock the freezer!!

My wife and I just ate the tenderloins from one of these last night. I made a Korean style Marinade then grilled it on the BBQ;

16oz Pork Loin
1/2 C Soy Sauce
1 Tbsp Chili oil
4 Garlic cloves minced
1 Tbsp Shredded fresh Ginger root
1 tsp Lemon zest
1 Tbsp lemon Juice

Marinate Pork Loin in marinade for at least 2 hours. Grill meat like you would a steak.

If legal then perhaps as was suggested previously a nice recurve crossbow might be in order? ;)

Excalibur of Canada makes some excellent ones, durable/accurate. Many others out there too, though most other are more complex/compound

Did you ever hear a pig squeal for 10-15 minutes at 2AM?? An arrow/dart produces massive hemorrhaging, it's very effective,, it's not quick..

I would go for the stun-gun, then slit her throat into a bucket,, after you put her in the back of the pick-up, less mess.

You are going to take the carcase out to a rural area to field dress the pig?? A 200 lb pig probably has 80-100 lbs of blood, viscera, head, & hide,, not something you want to leave in a pile in the back yard..

:eek::confused::munchin

Thats getting it done....never tried to shoot em in the head with a bow. Have shot deer in the head with the rifle.

Don't think I'd try to shoot a hog in the head with a bow either. Most likely bounce off most of the time, but then there are times like the video.:)

Well, the thread has degenerated pretty far so that even as little as I know will appear intelligent.

I would not spend much money on a hog trap as they are very smart creatures and learn rapidly ( more rapidly than your average amateur hog trapper). :D

You will most likely only be successful one time with a trap and once the pigs find some of their kin in the trap they will avoid it. New pigs moving into the area may be caught sporadically but the locals will not be. I saw a lot of bated traps in the SC WMA and none of them had any pigs in them and the corn was all old.

If you have enough land to move it around and change baits you may have more success.

If you have an AR lower, PSE makes a 400 fps cross bow that fits on it and is capable of shooting one inch groups at 100 yards. Price is about $1K. Requires very little practice to become proficient.

Ordered a snare from Boarmasters http://shop.boarmasters.com/main.sc and I will most likely use 00 buck in 12 gauge. I don't think there's an issue other than maybe an accidental cow killing from a stray round. But I'm hoping the cows will run when the hog gets caught in the trap. Not worried about the neighbors, closest one is half a mile away, and they shoot all the time. Plus I'd be operating within the law. mmmmm bacon!

All good stories require pictures. Tell your wife to set the camera next to the door so she can grab it and bring it to the ER so she can get some pictures of them stitching up your legs after a dead zombie boar resurrects and decides you are fresh meat. :D :D :D

I think this is really going to be an interesting thread.

There is a lake Ross Barnett, above Jackson, Mississippi. Highway 43 runs across the south side. Just off of 43 is a game preserve. The Goverment put white Russian there about 40 years ago. Some of the pigs go over 300pounds.

There is one draw back, premitive weapons only. Bows and black powder. If you can't do it with one shot you are asking for trouble. You sign in when you enter the A.O. That is only in case you don't come back out. Oh and there is a 40 square lake and river to fish and camp on. Look it up on line before planning a trip. Enjoy
