View Full Version : Bomber Kills 31 in Moscow Airport

Russia's ruble-dominated stock market MICEX fell by nearly two percent following the blast, which ripped through the baggage claim area at Moscow's Domodedovo airport at 1332 GMT.
Smoke wafted out of the baggage claim area and people were seen running out of the emergency exits at the airport, local media reported.
Initial casualty figures were contradictory with ITAR-TASS saying about 20 people had been killed. A spokeswoman for prosecutors put the number of casualties at about 20.
Moscow suffered its worst attack in six years in March 2010 when two female suicide bombers from Russia's volatile Dagestan region set off explosives in the metro, killing 40 people.
The Kremlin is struggling to contain an Islamist insurgency in the mainly Muslim North Caucasus, and rebels have repeatedly vowed they will take their battle to the Russian heartland.
They are now saying 31 killed and 130 wounded.

Killing Russians for allah, what a surprise.
Just wait until the Russians retaliate.....:munchin
The Russians will find out who was behind the bombing and kill everyone with the same last name. I'll be cheering for the Russians.

No, they'll give Kadyrov another Hero of Russia medal.

The liberals would have none of that...
Interested in seeing how this is going to unfold. I think someone may have just poked at the sleeping Bear.

Seems that with their insurgency largely defeated and isolated, the Islamists of the North Caucuses are concentrating their limited resources on large, high-profile targets in the heart of Russia. These targets are hit less often, but have higher casualty numbers and are granted more media exposure. I think these are rather similar to the recent attacks in Iraq, where the insurgency is no longer able to muster massive assaults on government installations and security forces, instead carrying out a few attacks that will give them the most media attention. Either way, I hope that these kinds of attacks are a sign of the declining power of the insurgencies in both countries.

I happily agree.
RIP to those murdered, prayers out for speedy recoveries.

The west and it's pseudo-intellectual politicians/"leaders" will wait, just like we did in WWII, until it's almost too late and world domination is at stake.
This islamic sub-human species only understands violence and brutality, someone needs to teach them fear.
I hope when the Russians retaliate it's so brutal that it shakes the islamic fascists to their core.
I kinda liked the "Swordfish" idea; anyime they instigate an action, slam them 100 times harder until they understand the cause and effect.

We cannot declare war on a religion when they have taken over half of the world. America cannot do that, especially since we encourage religious freedom.
Remember in "Charlie Wilson's War" when Gust said that Joan needed to stop using a secular vocabulary when describing the war in Afghanistan when it was the USSR and the Mujaheddin.
We just cannot declare war on religion because its people want to move and spread its ideas.
The Swordfish thing does sound good though. A little hard to implement but good idea.

I find your view somewhat naive. Unfortunately it is shared by too many Americans. You assume that our enemies intend to let you continue your current lifestyle when they have successfully spread their religious ideals throughout your backyard. Maybe you intend to reason with the religious zealots when they are in charge. Good luck with that. I am just disappointed that we have decided to pass this problem down to our childeren.

Putin: Retribution 'inevitable' for airport attack
By JIM HEINTZ, Associated Press Jim Heintz, Associated Press – 4 mins ago
"MOSCOW – Prime Minister Vladimir Putin vowed "retribution is inevitable" for the suicide bombing that killed 35 people at Russia's busiest airport, while President Dmitry Medvedev demanded robust checks at all transport hubs and lashed out at the airport for lax security.
…Putin has built much of his reputation on his harsh stance against terror but he did not elaborate on what kind of retribution he had in mind during a government meeting Tuesday.
Medvedev described Domodedovo Airport security as being in "a state of anarchy" and said its management must bear key responsibility for the security failures that contributed to Monday's blast. Airport management objected, saying transport police were responsible for the inspection of people coming into the international arrivals area where the bombing took place.
The Russian president also vowed to fire or discipline government security officials for any lapses."

I know that we must combat radical Islam. I am not a left wing liberal that is saying make love not war. Islam is on another crusade, not as bloddy as the last one around but it is bad. We as Americans must understand that. But most just work a nine to five trying to get by worrying about the house note and not what is going on ten thousand miles away. QP are the ones that have to worry about that menace. Now all we need is a good general public support of those men and women and less critisicm from the left.
Now all we need is a good general public support of those men and women and less critisicm from the left.
We needed that years ago. If we aren't getting it now, what is it going to take for us to get it?
Islam is on another crusade, not as bloddy as the last one around but it is bad.
It is not as bloody, because thanks God we do not see it every day in United States. Go to Israel, you will be able to experience every tip of it. We are very lucky that our country is protected: our internal security is doing what it supposed to, and that our brave brothers let those, who still didn't get it, know that we'll come and knock on their doors if they disturb our peace.
It has been bloodier if you look at the world's history just over last ten years, and there are not to many changes in the good way.
Just my 0.0000002 cents,
Back to reading!

Al-Qaeda hand in Moscow attack?
By Syed Saleem Shahzad
ISLAMABAD - As of Tuesday, no one had claimed responsibility for Monday's apparent suicide bombing at Moscow's Domodedovo international airport that killed at least 35 people and injured another 180. Previous attacks in Russia have been blamed on Chechen militants.
Muslim separatists have also staged numerous attacks in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan and beyond - including the 2010 subway suicide attack in Moscow in which 40 people died.
Monday's attack could also fit into al-Qaeda's regional battle to reopen the war theater of the Caucuses, that is, to spread the battle focused in southern Afghanistan to the north of that country and beyond.
Chechen, Uzbek, Chinese and Tajik Islamists living in Afghanistan at the time of the Taliban's fall in late 2001 in the face of the United States-led invasion retreated to the Pakistani tribal areas, along with al-Qaeda. This resulted in a strong nexus between al-Qaeda and these opposition forces in their respective countries, but al-Qaeda's shura (council) only turned this connection into a strategy one-and-a-half years ago when it decided to train these Islamists. See Pakistan roots to Moscow attack? Asia Times Online March 31, 2010 and Ilyas Kashmiri strategy behind Dagestan blasts Asia Times Online April 2, 2010.
Al-Qaeda's decision to fire the Central Asian and Russian war theater followed their resolve to strengthen their position in the northern Afghan provinces of Baghlan and Kunduz, situated on the fringes of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, so that the insurgency could take strong root there before crossing the border.
Al-Qaeda's involvement with the Taliban, whose sporadic attacks were taking the insurgency nowhere in the northern regions, changed the insurgency's dynamics to such an extent that it has become a serious threat to the Afghan administration, especially in its sanctuaries in Baghlan and Kunduz.
Subsequently, al-Qaeda-affiliated groups like Jundallah launched well-trained Uzbek, Chechen and Tajik fighters into northern Afghanistan to expand the constituency of the insurgency from Pashtuns to the Uzbek and Tajik populations of the area. (See Asia Times Online's three part report Northern lights.)
The ripple effects are already being felt in areas of Central Asia. According to a recent report, a wide-ranging crackdown on religious freedom is underway in Tajikistan, with the authorities closing mosques and harassing men with beards. Another report says:
With ethnic tensions still simmering from a 1990s civil war and the continued presence of the Taliban on the ex-Soviet state's southern border, the Tajik authorities have recently mounted their own campaign against believers. With increasing alarm, they have been watching more and more young men attend mosques - and fewer and fewer of them sit around squares and restaurants sipping beer.
In a Twitter message, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev vowed to track down and punish those responsible for the Moscow airport attack. "Security will be strengthened at large transport hubs," he wrote. "We mourn the victims of the terrorist attack at Domodedovo airport. The organizers will be tracked down and punished."
This might be more difficult than imagined. This could be the beginning of a new shadowy battle in the Russian Federation and Central Asia involving human missiles - suicide bombers. Al-Qaeda is adept at using indigenous people, such as the ever-growing number of militants and "martyrs".
Starting in July, the United States will begin a troop withdrawal in Afghanistan and attempt to engage regional players such as India, Russia and the Central Asian Republics in Afghanistan. By that time, the war could already have been significantly extended to the home of these new partners.

After the Airport Attack, Russia's Most Wanted Terrorist Hones His Message
By Simon Shuster / Moscow Tuesday, Feb. 08, 2011
http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,2047079,00.html
In the past three days, Umarov has released two of his trademark videos, claiming to be the mastermind behind the suicide blast that killed 36 people in Moscow's largest airport last month. His propaganda war — and possibly his wider insurgency against the Russian state — looks to be more alive than ever.
Compared to his previous videos — short, monotonous clips that follow almost every bombing in the Russian heartland, even if he had no connection to the incident — Umarov's latest offerings suggest a much more quick-witted approach to information warfare. In the first, undated video, which was posted on the Islamist website Kavkazcenter.com on Feb. 5, he shifts away from his usual tack of defending the Muslims in Russia's North Caucasus region. Instead Umarov tries to play on the fears of Russia's broader Muslim community, which in December became the target of a massive race riot in Moscow. "[Russians] have turned on the Muslims who have no choice but to live in Russia, to live in Moscow...and have started attacking them in huge numbers," he says, from inside what looks like a concrete bunker. "Today we are forced to answer this lawlessness."
