Anybody know this guy? Joseph Nathaniel Harris
Got alot of generic SF/ranger stuff up on his FB page website.
Claims service w/ 7thSFGA 12th gp, ranger bn .. I guess this book is about his life and trying to bring attention to undeclared war in Central america. Claims 100% disabled PTSD from service during that time?
I haven't read it. was wondering if this guy is legite as several innocent inquiries have turned up some very concerning anomlies in his story.
I'm in the skeptical camp and i know there are guys on here who will set me straight if this guy turns out to be the real deal.
Chow line is Open!

Well dam! If they had the internet 40 years ago I would have known that I didn't ever have to work for a living and just claimed full PTSD and laid in bed or gone hunting everyday. I feel like such an idiot to have spent so much of my life working. :D

SAN JOSE – LAWFUEL - The Law News Wire - United States Attorney Scott N. Schools announced that Joseph Nathaniel Harris, 44, now living in Riverside, California, pled guilty yesterday to stealing computer equipment in March 2005 from the San Jose Medical Group, including a DVD with sensitive medical and personal information for almost 200,000 patients in the San Jose area. FBI agents recovered the DVD from Harris’ car in April 2005.

According to a criminal complaint affidavit and indictment filed earlier with the court as well as Harris’ guilty plea today, Harris was branch manager at the San Jose Medical Group, a medical services organization that includes hundreds of affiliated physicians in the South Bay. Harris left the San Jose Medical Group in September 2004. On March 28, 2005, employees discovered computer equipment missing from the San Jose Medical Group administrative office, including a DVD with clinic visit entries for almost 200,000 patients. The DVD included patients’ names, addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, social security numbers, diagnoses, medical procedures, and other information. Harris kept the DVD but sold the computer equipment. FBI agents found the DVD in Harris’ car.

The indictment charges Mr. Harris with one count of theft in connection with health care, in violation of 18 U.S.C.§ 669. Today, before United States District Court Judge Jeremy Fogel, Harris pled guilty to this charge, admitting that he stole computer equipment from the San Jose Medical Group, including the DVD.

Judge Fogel has scheduled sentencing for Harris for September 5, 2007. The maximum statutory penalty for this count is 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine or twice the gain or loss resulting from the theft (whichever is greater), three years supervised release, and restitution. However, any sentence following conviction would be imposed by the court after consideration of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and the federal statute governing the imposition of a sentence, 18 U.S.C. § 3553.

Assistant United States Attorney Matthew A. Lamberti is prosecuting the case, with the assistance of legal assistant Susan Kreider. The prosecution is the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Medical group manager gets prison for stealing patients' records
October 10, 2007|By John Cote, Chronicle Staff Writer

(10-09) 12:42 PDT SAN JOSE - A former branch manager at the San Jose Medical Group has been sentenced to almost two years in prison for stealing medical records for about 187,000 patients, federal prosecutors said today.

Joseph Nathaniel Harris, 44, pleaded guilty in May to one count of health care-related theft after he stole computer equipment from his former employer, including a DVD that contained patients' names, Social Security numbers, medical diagnoses and other information, the U.S. attorney's office said.

Harris was sentenced Friday in U.S. District Court in San Jose to 21 months in prison and three years of supervised release. Judge Jeremy Fogel also ordered him to pay $145,154 in restitution.

Harris, now an Anaheim resident, was directed to begin his sentence Jan. 4.

Harris worked as the branch manager of the San Jose Medical Group's McKee clinic at 227 Jackson Ave. in August and September 2004, court records said.

During that time, "there were several incidents of reported theft of money and medications," according to an affidavit by FBI Agent Deborah Amrhein. "Because of these suspicions, (CEO Ernie) Wallerstein asked Harris to resign. ... Harris complied."

On March 28, 2005, employees discovered computer equipment was missing from the medical group's administrative office, including a DVD with clinic visit entries and detailed information for 187,000 patients in the South Bay, prosecutors said.

Harris kept the DVD but sold the stolen computer equipment, prosecutors said. FBI agents later found the DVD in Harris' car. He was charged in January 2006 with the theft.

During his employment at the medical group, Harris "bragged to fellow employees of his experience as a Green Beret, in military security and about his side business selling used computers," Amrhein wrote in the affidavit.

After Harris resigned, there were six burglaries at three San Jose Medical Group offices. Amrhein also reported that Harris had been fired from a 2003 job at the Silicon Valley Children's Fund for conducting personal business, including selling computers on Craigslist, on company time.

After he was fired from that job, there was a burglary at the Children's Fund offices and two computers were stolen, according to court documents.

I read Chapter 18 De Oppresso Liber (p 124) about SFTG and Chapter 19 David (Was A goliath) (p 129) about his being in confinement at Fort Irwin after being busted to PV2, and then being rescued by a "sergeant major Franklin" of the 7th SFG and whisked off in a C-141 to "Central America - home of the Sandanistas, FNLM, and Shining Path guerrillas."

I'll try to read some more as soon as I can stop laughing.

This all started when an SF brother called him on his 7th Grp Flash in his book. He claims to have been in 7th Grp. Then he said he was only attached to 7th Grp.l When asked for a name, he gave him mine. I never served with him. I messaged him on facebook and he said he was on ODA 771 in C Co 3/7 from 84 to 86. Well, ODA 771 was my team. I was on it from 83 to 88. Also, ODA 771 is in A Co, not C Co. When I told him that, he said he can't remember anything because he has PTSD.

Jeez. I don't have PTSD. I just have CRS.

This guy is a fraud. Nuff said from me.

Be well - Rick

He's on my FB page because I thought and he has told me he is a qualified SF soldier. As many of you know there is an active discussion on the 'Secret' FB page on him and his qualifications, etc.

He told me he has asked to be vetted here as a QP and has applied for membership in an SFA Chapter in California as a Member ('M' Status)

He claims to have graduated from SFAS while a member of the 12th SFG(A) (Also the SF Medical MOS course as well.)

He now makes no claim as to being SF qualified while serving in Panama or Latin America, nor being a member of any active duty SF Group.

He does readily admit to the criminal record for Computer theft in California. (FBI Case.)

If indeed he is lying about being a qualified SF soldier, I'd like to de-friend him and perhaps ban him from my FB page. (As far as I know he isn't on the 'Secret' Group FB page.)

So if he hasn't been vetted here or asked to be vetted as a QP here I'd like to know. :munchin

PS: Since he now admits he never served in any active SF group, why is he wearing a GB with an active duty flash on it instead of the 12th SFG (A)

Guys to be clear i was trying to help this guy when he came to my attention back in SEP 10. My wife found his FB web page full of SF/ Ranger stuff i was curious.
So checked it out and saw he had posted his DD-214, i figured he was trying to defend himself from something. Thought i could help vet him so had my wife contact him. There were many fb chats back and forth from her to him as she stated her husband was SF and was in 7th GP at the time. I was but I was in signal company at the time so I probably wouldn't know many Team guys that could vouch for him. but i told him about PS.com and said lots of guys there that could help you get vetted. He gave her his phone number so i called him, again in my mind to help Vett him. His story and the house of cards he had built fell apart w/ a few simple questions. Like who was your team sergeant ?So i figured some stuff was true and other stuff embellished to sell his book. I would have to check him out thru some friends , SWCS and ranger BN.. those requests haven't turned up any info yet.

Here is some of his statements in chats w/my wife. If i did this right his words are in {orange}.

please call me. I understand your doubts. I do not need you to broadcast it. If YOU need to know I am real, that is enough for me.Author José Harris January 3 at 8:26pm Report

I just conferred with 8 "real" SFers that do know me and were in 7th group. They all suggested I ignore you. I will take down my DD214s. twoof them suggested for OPSEC reasons, but I hope you download a copy of them. I also asked military fakers to check me out thoroughly.

I WOULD like to hear back from you once you check out whether or not I GRADUATED the Q course. I may not be a "real" SF soldier in your book, but apparently to those who know me and served with me, I am. I asked them ALL if I offended them in anyway by using the 7th group flash, since I was only attached to them. They were unanimous- No.

I was going to stop using the 7th Gp Flash on FB because of you. I am not.

I do not need to be VETTED by you or anyone else. You made bold statements about me and that I am a fake. I hope you are decent enough, to not just go with your gut feelings but to find out the FACTS, there is the FOIA.

I wish he would have just messaged me. He did not care what I had to say, only that I could not answer some of his questions. I do not blame him. I hate posers. But I swear he is wrong. i hope he takes the time to look into the facts This is very very sad.

Author José Harris January 3 at 9:40pm Report
I deleted everything. My 214s, comments and orders. I am guessing he is your husband. I am not mad. If he does not like who I am, that is his right. But to straight up say some of the things he did was wrong.

I certainly am not upset with you and I hope we remain FB Friends. But I TRULY hope he looks into the FACTS. I do not care how many buddies he calls. I was no one significant in Central America. I have just as many buddies. The facts and the truth is what counts. Not assumptions. As I said, I do not blame him for doubting me. There are too many fakes out there. But I hope he has the decency to really check with Ft. Bragg. He seemed quite content that I couldn't answer some of his questions. That seemed to be all he needed to hear. It seemed like he ignored all of the relevant FACTS, names, places, units that I did tell him. He seemed to KNOW I was a fake so he only sought out to find any hole in anything I had to say. My military record is verifiable and indisputable.

While he or maybe you... might not care, I am really hurt by this. It saddens me deeply. I try to be a good, honest, positive person, who helps others. I just wish he would have asked before making accusations. He seems sure that he is right. I honestly do not expect to hear back from him. I am very very easy to verify, FACTUALLY... I do not care if no one he knows has never heard of me. That might work for him, but it means nothing to me.

He says my documents are fake. That should be incredibly easy to check out. Incredibly easy. Download it. Send it to the FBI. Tell them I am illegally claiming to have been a special forces soldier and that I am claiming I was awarded things that are not true.

He would not hear any of this. Forgery like this IS A FEDERAL CRIME. Forgery! there is also the Stolen Valor Act. He says that it irrelevant because I do not post pictures of me with medals on. If I publicly claim I earned them and I didn't, then that would be fraud.

And I publicly claimed I was awarded them.

Like I said, I have PTSD. I am 100% service-connected disabled because of it. Because of my service in Central America. That too is an easily verifiable FACT. With all due respect, seriously, what is his problem? Why did he choose to attack me today. I have many friends on FB that were in 7th GP in Central America. I talked to him to help try to ease his concerns. It did not help. He just kept attacking and accusing me. I do NOT NEED to prove anything to him now. But he should do the right and decent thing. And check on my records FOR REAL and stop calling up his "buddies."

I am sorry for all this. I am not used to this. Like I said, I deleted everything. I really did not want to do that. Now it makes it look like I might be hiding something. Its just sad. No winners today. only losers.

I do not need an apology from him. But I kind of hope he finds out the truth and does so. It would make him a better person. We could both move on. We ALL make mistakes. I do sometimes, but I admit when I am wrong.

Please take care. I hope I have not offended you in any way. I know HE is real. It is an honor to connect with him here, but it also is sad to do so in this way.

I then dropped waiting to get the real deal , then this thing took on a life of its own on FB and the military fakers web page. many good guys i know have questioned him there and have gotten the same half truths and out right lies.

At this point i don't know if he ever graduated from ranger school-- the only thing varifiable is he was in BN and went to RIP- ranger indoc program , you guys know thats not ranger school and doesn't authorize the tab. Fact he never served in 7th SFGA in any capacity unless you count hanging out with some sf guys at a range in the mess hall or at the club. Fact he never served in any Capacity w/ SF in Central America at all. His affiliation w/ 12th group reserve is proven but his having ever gone to the Q-course and served on an A-team as a qualified 18D is still in question. The only SGM that recalls him says he was not SF qualified.

Sorry for the long read but i said all along if i was wrong about this guy i would apologize and help him sell his books. I guess i have inadvertently put my rep out there so i would really like a call made on this guy! should only take a few more days.

I just cleaned this up a bit for ease of reading and changed the font color to orange because the red was giving me a headache ;) - Richard

I wouldn't beat myself up too much if I were you. Certainly a little but, not too much....In the future you’ll have this site available to take lead of any vetting process.

.... I never tried to vet someone and had never personally met a poser (I don't think). I suspect it's probably easy to pretend to be someone you're not. Especially when you know enough to get your little toe in the door but, it will eventually catch up to you if you're a poser and of all things, you're stupid enough to write a book. I bet many of these guys have had an alias before and figured it would be just as easy to embelish, just a bit, and then build on that when so much information is so easily accessible. Sucks to be them though when a QP finds them and gets this process started....

They'll eventually ALL be found.....jd

thanks man but
Not beating myself up, have just learned that SF records are a mess and it takes longer than expected to verify this stuff. You would think by now there would be a collective effort to have a single source to verify all SF related claims. our system works better and faster ie just ask around. The mistake made (not just by me) and hence forth learned from was not to confront the guy and point out his flaws as this gave him cause to change his story and revise and now take down all the offending stuff on the web. Should of had all the evidence packed and wrapped i guess Team seargent was right , doesn't work as well when he sees you comeing. my bad , like i can't take a spanking
The good news is i have reconected with some old friends while ingaged in this sillyness so thats something.

Even the title "Mi Vida Loca" was stolen. "Mi Vida Loca" was a movie about Mexican gang life in East LA. If you want to know why it is hard to get out of that life, watch that movie. After you watch it, you will understand "Pendejismo"...

That "classified" war he says he served in is no longer classified. It was made public (unclassified) in the late 90's. I was there at Ft. Bragg when medals were awarded for that "secret" war.

Boy it would really suck for this guy if someone were to contact a Veterans Administration Investigator (http://www.va.gov/oig/)and give him/her this guy's name and his secret "claims". And that VA Investigator called Ft. Bragg, United States Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) to ask if this guy actually served in that "secret" war.

And, if he's not telling the truth, wow! :munchin

got a serious question for the ranger bn guys here related to this jose story?
I went to ranger school from SF so not sure how the BN works.
He was a assigned to HHC 1bn 75 RNG 80-81.Only 1 yr according to his own records PFC at best. Medic 91A. Now as i understand it all newbies go to RIP. One of his buddies has vouched for him attending RIP. But ranger school as i recall is reserved for the leaders in the unit and only if a young guy is exceptional would he be sent to ranger school. Is this correct? And don't you have to sign up to stay in the BN for a period of time after ranger school as a pre-requisite?
Would a brand new cherry medic assigned to HQ even get a shot at ranger school when he was only in the BN for one yr? Seems to me there would be alot more senior guys ahead of him. Those slots were coveted.
When he showed up at his new unit 187th inf he had a ranger tab . I have not seen a pic of him with that ranger tab over a scroll.... doesn't this seem odd.

His Ranger claims seem to be just as fucked up as his SF claims.

As far as going to Ranger School from Battallion, usually everyone goes after they have proven themselves. Batt sends PFC's and have even sent PV2's. It just depends on OPTEMPO.

Back in my day, you could have gotten a slot immediately after arrival to the unit, or you could end up waiting two years to get a slot. I was in 3rd batt for 1 1/2 years and never went.

One year and out was typical of someone who was RFS, or Relief For Standards. RGR BN's used to have a high attrition rate with respect to incoming privates. Once you graduated Rgr School you would be immediately promoted to SPC, not always but it was the norm. It took me 15 months to get a Rgr School slot, and I was "online" in an Inf Platoon.

I have a little more detail regarding his Ranger claims.

He signed up at armyranger.com a little while ago and claimed he graduated Ranger School with class #8-81.

One of the long time members of AR.com also graduated in that class. Our hero is not on the graduation orders for that class.

So the check wasn't run through RTB since proof was already readily available. If he is not on those orders, there won't be a card at RTB with his name on it.

Yesterday, I stopped at a convenience store only to see the same man I had given money to before to get off the street. He then tells me his Tet story. Now he was born in 51 or so he claims. I asked if he could paint, as we need ceilings plus vaulted walls painted, plus much more. He claimed to be a master at everything from painting to plumbing. Maybe he is/was? He was not yesterday as I offered to buy him coffee as it was about 30 degrees and he says- I have a beer to keep warm. I have given him my number plus the money to call me, and; guess what- he still does not call after agreeing to work for X an hour. Hell, I threw in food. I have offered to drive him to the VAMC for any treatment,. I have offered to drive him to the Downtown Rescue Mission which we give to. He is not going. He says he is waiting on a Gov check.

Myself and about 300 other 12th Group folks got an email from him yesterday. I was with C/3/12, 86-89 and don't remember the name or the face (he included a couple of pics in the email) but I remember a few of the guys he mentions in his email. The guys that have responded don't remember him either. He's sent several out today, something about going to a storage locker and finding all his orders.

B,

If this was you, it's up now:

That was a good article...BUT he is a fraud. He is not a RANGER school graduate and never served in 1/75th RGR Bn and most of his story is a mix stories he stole and of lies he has fabricated. He did not serve in any secret war, he was not a Green Beret in the 7th Special Forces Group. He is a Poser and Fraud.........His Qualifications as a Special Forces Graduate are being checked out and orders and diplomas and DD214's he has been posting on the web are all looking like fakes....... In a short time when the real DD214's from a FOIA come back the comutity will fully expose this person that is trying to get financial gaim from the blood and sweat of my Brothers in Arms.....

Something we know that Mr. Harris does not is exactly how many "Special Forces" soldiers served in the "secret" wars. I'm betting I can have someone look at those names to verify or deny Mr. Harris claims.

What Mr. Harris might not know, is in order to fight in a "secret" war you need to have a "secret" clearance.
Something else we can and will check on.

Mr. Harris, we are currently checking and when we find out what your military records say (or don't say) I might be on the phone soon to a U.S. Department Of Veterans Affairs OFFICE OF INSPECTOR GENERAL.

Your claims better be real, we are about to find out.

Guys who served... in most cases honorably... yet feel the need to grossly inflate their service, as this guy has very obviously done (1. Not a tabbed Ranger. 2. Never in 3/7) piss me off waaaay more than those who never served and make wild claims.

He was part of the 'brotherhood' and chose to dishonor himself with his lies. May he, and all like him, rot in hell - but have to face those they've dishonored before they get there!

Matt Courage was in my class, the tallest (6'8") 18D I ever knew. He towered over me (I'm 6'3") and during pay day activities Nick Rowe made a comment about how his boots looked like small canoes (they were something like size 14). I'll try to look him up to see if he remembers this guy.

Here is what we do know.
1 - he is not a Ranger School Graduate
2 - He did not serve in 1/75th

I hang my head in shame that I believed this guy's BS; and was even friends with him on FB...his page is no longer available. I was going to buy his book and he even emailed me his book in PDF. But as I got to talking to him on FB (and I kick myself for not keeping a record of those conversations as hdgb did), I began to have reservations about him. I threw a few real names at him and a few bogus names and said they were all in Panama when he was there, etc. I got back the same crap about PTSD and how he was awarded 100% disability for it.

I just got a 100% service-connected rating for my PTSD related to C.A. Because of my book, my next book and my petition about getting recognition for C.A. Vets, I have been "reminded" to limit what I say <~ his words

Which made me really wonder but I never questioned him. I certainly can remember most of the close friends I served with and as well as most of my close friends in other units. When I asked him about a certain friend that was killed in El Sal, he said that that was classified information and he couldnt discuss the particulars about it. Well, its not classified that he died.

He also informed his FB friends that Oprahs Book of the Month club had picked up his book and was going to publish it further. I don't know if this true but took his word for it at the time.

So I am guessing he is not done with his charade. I really hope you guys find out the truth about him. I feel like an idiot for allowing myself to trust his word, since he purported to be a faithful Christian as well. I should maybe stop looking for the good in people anymore?

Zulu, looks like he changed his mind and demoted himself, quite promptly. His comments on the Together We Served page are interesting. 1SG Rock? Still always a Ranger?

Apparantly, Jose's page for his book is still up and active on FB. As a matter of fact, he just had a book signing in Santa Ana, CA. I have seen a copy of a VA letter regarding his award of VA benefits for PTSD and on Military Fakers, they reached out to Benning and found out he was never a Ranger. Company Overview A new petition has been submitted by Jose (Doc) Harris
The petition title is: Recognition of U.S. Veterans who Served in Latin America. The petition is directed to: U.S. Congress
Description To: The U.S. Congress

Prior to the U.S. invasion of Panama in 1989, thousands of military personnel served in Latin America. Although their actions have never been classified as either being involved directly in combat nor in combat-related situations, many of them put their lives on the line for the protection of Democracy in host countries. Today many of those veterans suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Still, others were exposed to unnamed chemicals, pesticides and herbicides.

We are asking the United States Government to officially recognize those that served in South and Central America in both combat units and combat-support units. Moreover, to welcome them home. It has been a long time coming.

Because many activities that occurred during those pre-Panama invasion years may still be considered sensitive and/or classified, we are solely asking for the acknowledgment and recognition of those that served in s specific region of our hemisphere under unusually trying circumstances.

Please consider setting one day aside, some time in the near future and perhaps recognizing those that served in South and Central America with some form of award. Perhaps calling it the “Latin American Expeditionary Medal or Ribbon,” or something of that nature. Thank you for you consideration.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned (read less)

After being allowed to be his friend again, I found some more interesting information
He apparantly has lived in Israel for 18 yrs where he had several practices in psychology. He apparantly attended two medical schools there...one belongs to the other according to my sources. HE NEVER ATTENDED EITHER, NEVER GRADUATED FROM ANY SCHOOL IN ISRAEL NOR HAS HE EVER HELD ANY MEDICAL LICENSING OR PRACTICED MEDICINE IN ISRAEL. This is information that was researched by a friend of mine who is an attorney in Tel Aviv who spoke with Records at the schools.

JJ....he posted a pic of the Spring 2011 The Drop where his name is posted as a member with Chapter 12. He also has some AMAZINGLY modest pictures of himself wearing many different berets with flashes of all the units he served in. His new bio reads so well its a wonder he hasn't part the oceans and turned water into wine. Also, according to him, he is now receiving 100% disability for PTSD.
