Body found on Fort Bragg trail
http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/8866322/
"................Spokesman Ben Able said the body was found at about 11 a.m. Saturday on the All American Trail, near Plank and King roads on the western edge of Fort Bragg's grounds. Officials declined to say who found the body.
Army officials confirmed Monday that the man was a soldier, but they haven't released his identity and cause of death or said whether the death is considered a homicide....................."
As a side note to the story - this is why you don't report "all present" at the morning formation went they ain't - a voice of experience from both sides of that one. Funny as all hell when you're the one who gets to say "Team Sergeant, I need to see you and Sgt Smith in my office right after this formation." Not so funny for the Team Sergeant.
Thoughts and prayers out to the soldier's family.

Capt. Jeremiah D. Sipes, 33, of Belgrade, Mont., was found dead of a single gunshot wound about 11 a.m. Saturday at the fort's southwest corner, near the intersection of Plank and King roads, on the All American Trail, an unpaved path along the perimeter.................."

CID: Hunter may have shot soldier found dead on trail
http://fayobserver.com/articles/2011/01/05/1060818?sac=Home
"A soldier found dead on a Fort Bragg trail last weekend may have been shot by a hunter while he was jogging, Army investigators said Wednesday.............."
The drift of the story goes on about how the trail and training areas are closed from time to time - the trail during hunting season - and how people should stay out and how can the Army fix this.
But if the story is true then a hunter shot a running man and not a deer. Big difference in eastern NC.
RIP Cpt Sipes, Vaya con Dios..

"........"We was in here hunting, and the guy was running down the fire break," said the caller, who doesn't identify himself to a dispatcher. "We jumped a deer, and this guy with me shot him. Shot the guy. We need some help quick."........."
Sad way for a soldier to end his life - at the hands of a knot-headed hunter on the last day of hunting season.

What a terrible trajedy. There might be more to this than what is already known. I wonder what the officer was wearing? He may have been obscured to those hunters by a lot of brush. I'd hate to be in their shoes right now.

I doubt he was wearing a set of antlers.
I wonder about the details as well. Were these soldiers hunting there, or just bubbas? Do they just blaze away at anything that moves?

I was out at Cunningham Falls deer hunting in the snow this morning and saw exactly that . Four guys found a set of deer tracks, got on line and walked until they saw something move out in front and they started shooting. It could have been a deer or it could have been a purple polka dotted elephant and they would still shoot.

What a terrible tragedy for the Captain and his family. Prayers out.
Some of them are quite stupid and frantic when the season is coming to an end...
The day before thanksgiving a ST Trooper (non-uniformed, watching my back) and I were putting down an Elk with two Game Warden cars on both sides of us. A truck drove up behind us and three dumbasses started shooting at some other Elk around us. One got out of the vehicle. Needless to say they missed and received quite a few citations (probably won't be able to hunt again for sometime in several states). Two days later, same area and Wardens, a couple of rounds came with 15 feet of me from different directions. I never asked Lt. Loewen but expect its a daily occurence.
Some folks just aren't capable of the responsibility. Good productive innocents and their families pay the price because of a fools poor judgement.
Joggers unaware of hunters along Fort Bragg trail
http://fayobserver.com/articles/2011/01/08/1061513?sac=Home
"Joggers and bikers have regularly used the All American Trail the past three months, unaware deer hunters were allowed in the nearby woods............."
I still blame the Hunter in all this but this claim of all the people using the trail and none knew the trail was used by hunters is horse shit.

http://www.fortbraggmwr.com/AATrail/AATrailMain1.htm
But Yes - you could fault the MWR site for failing to note hunting season
http://www.fortbraggmwr.com/aatrail.php
Sure lots of people knew about the trail, knew it was a nice trail and used it - but nobody looked up anything about it. Way back when we were talking about trails on this site. I had read the trail had just opened a couple of segments and so looked it up. Right at the from of the trail site it said it was closed during hunting season.
I like to hike the Uwharrie Trail and it runs through prime hunting grounds. The only notice posted is at the Trail Heads. And that only asks that you wear bright clothing during the season. And believe me, last Sat we heard shots all around us.
The dream for the Ft Bragg Trail is to go all the way around Ft Bragg and make a loop of something like 76 miles. If the anti hunters get their way - and ban hunting near the trail - that will effectively close Ft Bragg to hunting.
So, while this incident is a terrible accent caused by the hunter it should be used as a teaching point for people who use similar trails - Wear bright clothing when off roading during hunting season.
My grandfather told me way back in the 60s "You don't wear a light brown jacket into the woods during hunting season." So that $4 blaze orange hat I got at Wal-Mart sure makes me look like a dork - but man does it stand out in the woods.

TO AVOID A CATASTROPHE: Anyone that owns or handles a FIREARM should ALWAYS read the operators manual and commit to memory THE SAFETY RULES. That come with the firearm. FIREARMS "Accidents" in my opinion are almost always the result of NEGLIGENCE by the person handling the firearm!" Almost every manuel that comes with a firearm lists the BASIC RULES of SAFETY for handling and using a firearm. HENCE, The rule no.4 posted by TR, BE sure of your target and and what is beyond it.....Poor Judgement, Lack of Proper firearms trainning and NEGLIGENCE, cost a good soldier his life. R I P SIR. In my opinion there is no such thing as a firearms "ACCIDENt." In almost every incident involving the discharge of a firearm it is 100% NEGlIGENCE...REASON being the person handling the firearm violated one or more of the basic SAFETY RULES of handling and using a firearm...Tom Kelly R I P Capt. prayers out to all involved.

Post implements changes along All American Trail
http://paraglideonline.net/032411_news1.html
"In the wake of a tragic New Year’s Day hunting accident along Fort Bragg’s All American Trail, which resulted in the death of a Fort Bragg Soldier, the post has implemented changes in an attempt to minimize the chances of it happening again.
Post officials have implemented a 300-foot buffer zone on Fort Bragg’s boundary of the trail, which prohibits hunters from coming near the trails which are often occupied by joggers.............."
&
"......“The trail is on the Fort Bragg boundary and if you’re going down the trail, you have Fort Bragg on one side and either private lands or state game lands on the other,” explained Alan Schultz, Fort Bragg’s Wildlife Branch. “We have no control of the off-post hunting activity. So during rifle hunting season, the trail has to be closed to be safe.”
Schultz pointed out that even if there were no hunters on Fort Bragg, they could still hunt on the adjacent private lands. He said that fact affected the decision to close the trail during rifle hunting season.........."
As noted elsewhere in the article - if you're out in the woods, on trails, running, biking, whatever - it never hurts to wear bright colors.

That's very true, particularly in hunting season which is about half the year. I spent yesterday afternoon re-fletching some arrows and even arrows can travel long distances.

Fort Bragg closes All American Trail as hunting season begins
http://fayobserver.com/articles/2011/09/30/1126763?sac=Mil
"Fort Bragg has closed the All American Trail to the public with the arrival of muzzle-loading season for deer hunters, military officials said.
The hunting season begins Saturday, and the seven-mile trail, which parallels Plank Road between Raeford and King roads, is off limits until Jan. 3, a Fort Bragg release said............."
Uwharrie NF and may other state and national woods allow hunting also. Signs at the Uwharrie Trail Heads say to wear bright clothing during hunting season. I got a butt ugly $3 orange hat from Wal-mart I'll be wearing from now to Jan 2012.

Hunter who accidentally shot soldier to serve a year on probation
http://www.fayobserver.com/articles/2012/05/29/1180975?sac=fo.local
"......Thompson thought he saw the large set of antlers of a buck leaping over a knoll, the record says. He told investigators he fired twice, once at the rack, and once in the direction he thought the deer was heading.
After the second shot, Thompson's friend heard a squeal, and then heard Thompson say, "Oh my God, there is someone down there," the record says.........."

For that astronomical amount of neglience the shooter actually got off pretty easy. I wonder if the victim's survivors will attempt any action on the civil side. I would.

Concur absolutely.
We are accountable for every round that we fire.
Hopefully, somewhere in all of that, he lost his license to ever hunt again.

A years probation and 5 yr. loss of hunting priviledges does not sound like much, he will however have to live with what he did for the rest of his life. No winners here.
