View Full Version : Facebook is tracking YOU

If you are on Facebook, know that they are gathering all the info on you they can and now they are tracking your movements.
TS

Recently the social engineering site FACEBOOK has introduced a new feature:

"Places I Checked Into". This feature allows "friends" to see exactly where you are logging in from.

Various OPSEC and DoD forums have indicated (via open source reporting) British forces have been targeted by terrorist/insurgent cells in the SWA AOR by using this feature.

Tactically, this FACEBOOK feature can be employed by an adversary to refine targeting and corroborate intelligence on specific sensitive locations and/or exploitable personnel.

Please ensure your personnel are aware of this risk.

You will find an attachment providing guidance on disabling this feature.

It is important to note the default for this feature is ON, unless overtly disabled by the user.

Done. Next step, delete FB account. It's benefits have lost almost all ground to the detriments.

If not for PS.com, I would never have known most of these FB issues.

Thanks, TS!

You can also use a public proxy server.
They're out there.

My wife has tried to get me to join to no avail. I have become a complete neanderthal in the eyes of friends and family for not joining the big social network. I am one of the few that still prefers to socialize in person, I guess. Or maybe I am just a loner . Either way, the less info about me on the interwebs the better, IMO.

My Wife is really big into this site.

Looking at her profile. Like TS said you have to set your profile. Most web site track you IP address. But you as the user on FB have to allow this to happen. My wife showed me how you have to ok the "PLACES" click to "open" to your FREINDS. Only your FREINDS can see where your at. Whith that said, why in hell would you. Well yes I and you know why some no face to face people would. I think for us that have kids that are on these sites and kids now a days with cell phones at 10 y/o will only "meet" people viz txt or talk to each other via texting.

I think as a Active duty Military service member it is a OPSEC, I don't think people fully know what these site can and are doing. USMC if I remember right. Stopped all Marines from using these site on DoD systems and down range. Smart move.

Thanks for the post TS and the PDF. I know there was once one on here on what to protect yourself on FB and MS sites. I have those saved on my families computer/laptops.

I check me kids almost weekly. Did the sit down on why's and why not's of FB..MS sites. I don't think yound people today think about their future as much as they think they do. Told my 13 y/o, keep this in mind when you want a Job or go off to college at 18 y/o and you can't get into that college or get that job becuase of a post to a friend or photo on your social site. The speech of anything you post is forever on the internet.

Mind posting this here instead of linking to Google Docs? It requires a Google account to access.

I have read that in the future actually, bookstores may evolve to where when you go to buy a book, you select the book you want from a display, and then a special high-tech printer prints off the whole copy for you; this will prevent the bookstores from having to carry huge volumes of books to sell, instead just carry ones to display.

Like this?

Anyone familiar with the application "foursquare"?

It's a social networking site that can link up to your facebook account. You 'check in' to locations, it automatically updates your facebook page, and even posts a map with a dot where you are on there.

Foursquare is also looking into photosharing (checking in with a photo you just took or looking at other photos from where you checked in).

Riddle me this: why does the entire world (friends, family, co-workers, enemies, others) need to know that (hypothetically) at 2:23pm EST you were at McDonald's with Suzie Q?

If you look at Post #1 here by TS, it states with regard to Facebook's Places I Checked Into that:
Various OPSEC and DoD forums have indicated (via open source reporting) British forces have been targeted by terrorist/insurgent cells in the SWA AOR by using this feature.

Tactically, this FACEBOOK feature can be employed by an adversary to refine targeting and corroborate intelligence on specific sensitive locations and/or exploitable personnel.

Even if you weren't military, and weren't using this in your AO, the same principles can be used by burglars (easy to pinpoint when you're not home), civilian employees (you said you were at lunch but Facebook says you were on the other side of town), etc. See what I'm getting at? This forum has beaten to death the common-sense aspects of PERSEC, and has been good at keeping members updated on the emerging technology associated with it.

I'm not trying to attack you personally, just using this post to bring up a larger point. I understand you're going to a liberal college, surrounded by kids younger than you who have no clue about personal security. Because everyone is doing it, it may justify it in your head that it's not that big a deal. I mean, is someone really going to use that information against you? The easiest way to answer NO to this question is by not putting it out there in the first place. In the end, it's your choice and your security. Choose wisely.

In my opinion, it's just as easy to send a text or make a phone call if I want to let the gf, brother or someone else know I'm at Location A. No need to shout it to the world and let them use it for whatever twisted things they do on their own time. :D

Exactly my point. Even posting on here enough gives the tech savy enough information to find out who you are, where you live and develop a profile of your likes/dislikes. ;)

You're as safe here as sitting in the front seat of a taxi during rush hour in Cairo, Lima or Bangkok.

It occurs to me that the sort of information that a marketing person or your friends might like to know is almost exactly the same sort of info I would want about you if I were a criminal or enemy who wanted to do you harm.

If I know that you live at address X and are going to dinner, a movie, or a party, I can clean out your house, bug it, snatch a friend or family member who stayed behind, or prepare a nice little reception for your return.

Anyone I want/need to know where I am, I tell them personally.

I don't need FB, the government, or anyone else tracking my movement.

Mark Zuckenberg is watching you. I disabled this when it 1st came out.

The whole point is, your friends see where you were and they "like" your staus so you feel special and appreciated. It is kind of funny to see the occassional XXXX stopped at this bar today. I wonder if they go to strip clubs...will that show too?

More people need to feel special. "Look at me, I'm doing something cool." Didn't MySpace automatically make Tom your friend as soon as you signed up, so you felt special?
