World condemns Gaddafi's call for jihad against Switzerland
World powers have reacted with outrage to a call by Colonel Gaddafi of Libya for holy war on the "obscene, infidel" state of Switzerland.

Col Gaddafi took a long-running and personal feud with the historically neutral European country to new heights with a speech in which he attacked the ban on new minarets on mosques approved by a Swiss referendum last year.
"Those who destroy God's mosques deserve to be attacked through jihad, and if Switzerland was on our borders, we would fight it," he said. "Jihad against Switzerland, against Zionism, against foreign aggression is not terrorism."
He called for a boycott of Switzerland by the Islamic world. "Any Muslim in any part of the world who works with Switzerland is an apostate, is against Mohammad, God and the Koran," he said.
"The masses of Muslims must go to all airports in the Islamic world and prevent any Swiss plane landing, to all harbours and prevent any Swiss ships docking, inspect all shops and markets to stop any Swiss goods being sold."
Col Gaddafi's typically eccentric row with Switzerland, which began when one of his sons was arrested along with his wife because of allegations of abuse by two members of his domestic staff, has come as a blow to western powers....

Wonder how many churches there are in Libya, and how he feels about new ones, with steeples and crosses atop, blaring hymns five times per day, being established in his country.
Maybe he would be interested in a quid pro quo, one for one swap?

Unlike some of their neighbors I'm glad that the Swiss had the strength of character and the sense of nantional identity to draw the line. They may have been neutral during two world wars but they are no shrinking violets. They along with Austria are two of the most discriminating societies in Europe.

I believe that you may be mistaken.
In the El Dorado Canyon operation, Gaddafi lost an adopted daughter, Hanna, and there were no US POWs. Two USAF Captains were killed when their F111 went down.

Gaddafi changes his image more than Madonna, there was the Arab phase, then the African phase, then the modern phase and now he is a Jihadi? This joker seemed to get the message when we bombed him last. Perhaps he just needs a friendly reminder every 20 some years.

I remember the incident. I also remember how quiet that SOB became after the incident. It made the UK a bit nervous at first thinking it was only going to make matters worse, but in the end, Reagan was right.

Have a niece that is just back from two semesters studying abroad in Switzerland. She reports that the Swiss are PISSED that we (i.e. Mr. Obama) pried into their private banking arrangements and crapped all over their client privacy etc. She also reports the Black Crow movement to be a rather impressive thing, applied to ANY non-Swiss, including Germans.

Hopefully they will still be able to keep their way of life and ethics going in the future but they can no longer be blind to the threat that faces the world, not just the West. Sorry if WE pissed in their oatmeal, but the ends justifies the means if it leads to cutting the al Qaida/Taliban cash flow, IF that was the intent behind the intrusion. Don't know enough about it yet. Got any helpful links ?:munchin

My bad: unclear remarks on my part. I was referring to Obama’s pursuit of the tax-avoidant income held by Americans in Swiss bank accounts, which Obamao is designating as tax evasion, because, ya know, we gotta tax all that income in order to keep the welfare checks coming.

Did you really think that Obama was hunting Islamic terrorist money in Europe?
Not content with being vague only once in post #16;
The Black Crow movement is an expression of Swiss nationalism and hostility towards immigration and foreigners. While aimed primarily at the low-wage foreign labor pool of guest-workers, this campaign of discrimination is far broader, and encompasses all non-Swiss. Being a free-thinking Californian, my niece was somewhat appalled by it, because it applied to her as well. A Black Crow decal on a storefront means that the Swiss inside will probably serve you, but if you’re German, American, Muslim, Italian, Austrian etc, you are, uh, standing on somebody else’s turf. In part, it is a response to the 2005 demographic study that discussed how, in 20 years, Europe will become Muslim without a shot being fired, given the relative birth rates of native and immigrant families. Mark Steyn was the main ball-carrier for publicizing that study.

It is worth recalling that Steyn was later put on trial in Canada (at the very venue of these Olympics, no less) for offending Muslims in a column he did for Macleans Magazine.

Much of what has been written about the Swiss Black Crow business condemns the Swiss as racists. It’s worth remembering that the majority of Switzerland’s immigration, as well as its ethnic minorities, are German, Italian and French.

* Libyan leader says refugees should mass on Israel's shores
* 'This is a time of popular revolutions': Gaddafi
* Accuses Western powers of being enemies of Islam
TRIPOLI, Feb 13 (Reuters) - Palestinian refugees should capitalise on the wave of popular revolts in the Middle East by massing peacefully on the borders of Israel until it gives in to their demands, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi said on Sunday.
Gaddafi is respected in many parts of the Arab world for his uncompromising criticism of Israel and Arab leaders who have dealings with the Jewish state, though some people in the region dismiss his initiatives as unrealistic.
He was giving his first major speech since a popular uprising in neighbouring Egypt forced President Hosni Mubarak to resign, an event which electrified the Arab world and prompted speculation that other Arab governments could also be toppled.
"Fleets of boats should take Palestinians ... and wait by the Palestinian shores until the problem is resolved," Gaddafi was shown saying on state television. "This is a time of popular revolutions."
"We need to create a problem for the world. This is not a declaration of war. This is a call for peace," he said in a speech given to mark the birthday of the Prophet Mohamed, a holy day in the Islamic calendar.
He also said: "All Arab states which have relations with Israel are cowardly regimes."
Palestinians have long demanded that refugees who fled or were forced to leave in the war of Israel's creation in 1948 should be allowed to return, along with their descendants.
Israel says any resettlement of Palestinian refugees must occur outside of its borders.
ISLAMIST MILITANTS
Gaddafi also issued a call to Muslim countries to join forces against Western powers. He said the world was divided into white, denoting the United States, Europe and their allies, and green for the Muslim world.
"The white colour has decided to get rid of the green colour," Gaddafi said. "These countries should be united against the white colour because all of these white countries are the enemies of Islam."
He said violent acts committed by Osama Bin Laden's al Qaeda network went against Islam because they killed innocent people. But he said there was a political explanation for the emergence of militant Islamists.
"Why did this movement emerge? Regardless of its behaviour, in my analysis this movement appeared in response to the American arrogance towards the Islamic nation and in response to its hegemony of the Islamic world," Gaddafi said.
"It was a response to ... the submission of rulers in the Islamic world, the subservience of rulers in the Islamic world to this arrogance from Europe and the United States," he said.
Gaddafi has for decades challenged what he describes as Western imperialism. His oil exporting country spent years under international sanctions for seeking banned weapons and sponsoring militant groups.
These were lifted in 2004 when Gaddafi renounced his previous activities, though he still frequently deploys his colourful rhetoric against the West. (Additional reporting by Souhail Karam in Rabat; Writing by Christian Lowe; Editing by Jon Boyle)

With anti-government revolutionary turmoil on its eastern and western borders, how is it that no significant protests have occurred thus far in Libya, where dictator Col. Moammar Gadhafi has been in power for 42 years? Expatriate activists and bloggers are trying to arrange for a protest there this coming Thursday, the 17th. Somehow, I don’t think it’s going to measure up.

Is this revolution merely the new soft jihad?
Does this mean Qaddafi isn't a reformed evil despot?
Is this revolution merely the new soft jihad?
Anything is possible, perhaps he is chirping now since events in Egypt rightly have most dictators in the area nervous. If you look at what he says, he seems to be hedging his bets, repeating politically correct cliches for the region, akin to a politician saying something like " I am for the children." Who isn't for the children, would you like a cookie?
He brings up the pet rabble rousing issue of the Islamic world the Palestinians, realistically do any of the Islamic nation in the region truly give a crap about the Palestinians? They use them as politically expedient fodder, why doesn't Qaddafi offer them a homeland in Libya if he cares so much, or with all the Saudi wealth what are they doing for the Palestinians? His green vs white comments are troubling, but then he also denounces the violence of the Islamists since their violence towards fellow Muslims seems to alienate the masses. In short like many a politician he says everything and nothing so when events bear out he can claim credit. IMHO Qaddafi doesn't care about Islam, Jihad, or Democracy, like most despots he cares about staying in power, and in his case maybe his reputed female bodyguards...
As Dusty suggested, it might well be time for Qaddafi to experience US Airpower again.

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2011/02/16/anti-government-protests-spread-libya/
Hundreds of Libyans calling for the government's ouster clashed with security forces firing rubber bullets and water cannons early Wednesday in the country's second-largest city as Egypt-inspired unrest spread to the country long ruled by Moammar Qaddafi.
The protest in Benghazi was triggered by the arrest Tuesday of a Libyan activist but quickly took on an anti-government tone, witnesses and activists said. The protest was relatively small in size, but it signaled anti-government activists have been emboldened by the recent wave of uprisings.
Activists using Facebook and Twitter have called for nationwide demonstrations on Thursday to call for Qaddafi's ouster, a constitution and comprehensive political and economic reforms.
Tuesday's demonstration began in front of the local security headquarters after Libyan troops raided the house of rights advocate Fathi Tarbel in Benghazi and took him away, according to a Switzerland-based activist Fathi al-Warfali.
Tarbel was released after meeting with a powerful Libyan security official, Abdullah al-Sanousi, but the protesters proceeded to march through the coastal city to the main downtown plaza, he said.
Independent comfirmation was not possible as the government keeps tight control over the media, but video clips posted on the Internet showed protesters carrying signs and chanting: "No God but Allah, Moammar is the enemy of Allah" and "Down, down to corruption and to the corrupt."
Police and armed government backers quickly clamped down, firing rubber bullets and dousing protesters with water cannons.
Another video with the same date people running away from gunfire while shots are heard. A young man in a white, bloodstained robe was then shown being carried by protesters.
A Libyan security official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to release the information, said 14 people, including 10 policemen, were injured. He said protesters were armed with knives and stones.
The outbreak of protests in Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, Bahrain and Iran has roiled the Middle East and brought unprecedented pressure on leaders like Qaddafi who have held virtually unchecked power for decades.
It also has posed new challenges for the United States, which has strategic interests in each of the countries. President Barack Obama conceded Tuesday he is concerned about the region's stability and prodded governments to get out ahead of the change.
Libya's official news agency did not carry any word of the anti-government protests. It reported only that supporters of Qaddafi were demonstrating Wednesday in the capital, Tripoli, as well as Benghazi and other cities.
JANA, the official news agency, quoted a statement from the pro-Qaddafi demonstrators as pledging to "defend the leader and the revolution." The statement described the anti-government protesters as "cowards and traitors."
The government also planned to free Wednesday 110 Islamic militants who were members of a group plotting to overthrow Qaddafi, although it was not clear if the previously scheduled release would occur.
Seif al-Islam Qaddafi, the leader's son, has orchestrated the release of members of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, which is suspected of having links to Al Qaeda, in the past as part of a reconciliation plan.
Qaddafi, long reviled in the West, has been trying to bring his country out of isolation, announcing in 2003 that he was abandoning his program for weapons of mass destruction, renouncing terrorism and compensating victims of the 1986 La Belle disco bombing in Berlin and the 1988 bombing of a Pan Am airliner over Lockerbie, Scotland.
Those decisions opened the door for warmer relations with the West and the lifting of U.N. and U.S. sanctions, but Qaddafi continues to face allegations of human rights violations in the North African nation.
The activist's arrest followed the collapse of talks between the government and a committee representing families of hundreds of inmates killed when security forces opened fire during 1996 riots at Abu Salim, Libya's most notorious prison. The government has begun to pay families compensation, but the committee is demanding prosecution of those responsible.
Al-Warfali said the demonstration continued until 4 a.m. Wednesday, calling it "an unprecedented state of agitation."

Perhaps we could forward him some sleeping tents ?
Gadhaffi is merely a figurehead - has been since El Dorado Canyon and the Libyan power elite realized he was gonna get them all killed or thrown out of power if they let him continue playing his crazy games - the real power lies in a consortium of power-brokers who choose to remain out of view and let Ghadaffi the 'puppet' be the public face of Libya.
This will be an interesting situation to watch. ;)
