The March issue of "Hemmings Classic Car" #66, www.hemmings.com, ( covers American made classic autos) carried articles on several original autos. These were not restored vehicles. All were in original paint, interior, drive train and suspension work using original parts, and engine decals. The list of covered vehicles included: 1932 Ford roadster with flathead V8 with 96K miles, 1937 Packard with inline 8 with 40K miles, 1971 Plymouth 'Cuda with 25K miles, 1930 Oakland roadster V8, 1948 Chrysler business coupe ( with a trunk large enough to carry an A-Team) with 16K miles, 1960 dual quad Corvette roadster, 1967 Cadillac Eldorado with 43K miles, 1954 Hudson Hornet twin carb drop top with 15K miles, 1971 Ram Air Mustang with 550K miles, 1961 Imperial Crown needing Hi-test gas and 104 octane booster/tank with 185K miles, 1956 Dodge Royal Lancer with 25.4K miles, and a 1962 T-bird with 51.8K miles.

A few of the owners included a history of the polishes and waxes used, as well as guidance for interior care.

It seems like it would take some thoughtful maintenance to keep a car in working condition for that amount of time. I was skeptical and checked it out on snopes and nothing came up. I can't understand why the rubber wouldn't be rotted away, maybe being in darkness prevented that from happening.

a perfect Sunday afternoon
Finding a nice shady spot for your cool car (my "cool car" was my black, Alpha Romeo Graduate, rag-top) listening to tunes or the ball game and applying two coats of paste wax while MRFL worked on her tan.:D

I did not say, or mean to imply, original tires. That having been said, the 'Cuda and Eldorado had factory space saver tires in the trunk. The Dodge Royal Lancer was purchased by it's current owner in 1980 with the factory tires still on.

Lucas Tires, www.LucasClassicTires.com, and Coker Tires, www.COKERTIRE.com, market tires for classic imported and domestic autos from the 1900's, Model T's, etc, and up. Both may be able to provide some insight on just how long auto tires will last. Sunlight (UV rays) will degrade tires.

While I appreciate the fact that we have here a wonderful example of American craftsmanship, an automotive piece of history, I'm sad that it was never driven, never taken to a high school football game, a drive-in movie with the GF, picnics with the kids, buddies at the lake, fishing poles and cold beer in the trunk.

It was never given to the next generation to run around town in on a Saturday night, never raced at a green light, never allowed to run down a lonely highway.

On the other hand, I wish it was mine.

sorry RF I wasn't clear, I snoped this concerning the 1950 Chevy..

"Simply put, this is a true 100% factory original survivor (that includes the air in the tires). This ol' Chevy now has 437 original miles and is most likely the world's lowest mileage 1950 Chevy."

How could air stay in tires for 59 years?

.....How could air stay in tires for 59 years?

It was refreshed from time to time with a shot from an air pump?

Great memories, Dozer.

If GM started remaking these I'd sure buy one. Not sure where they'd get the US Steel, rubber, talent, etc. Also not sure where I'd come up with the $50k it'd probably cost.

Thanks, dadof18x'er.

This always brings back memories of my Dad's 1943 Dodge Pickup (Navy Surplus) and my red 1951 Jeep Station Wagon, blue 1957 Chevy Station Wagon, green 1948 Jeep Universal, black 1962 Corvette, and yellow 1966 Rambler 660 Classic. {BIG SIGH}

'56 Chevy Bel Air Sedan. (This is not a pic of the car but the exact paint scheme. Mine had small hubcaps not the fancy wheels.)

Anybody remember the DeSoto put in a "time capsule"; 1957 in Oklahoma if I recall correctly?

These cars make me a little bit jealous and a whole lot amazed. I'm in the process (several years in the process) of rehabbing my 73 Roadrunner that I finagled my dad in to giving me as a dowry. It doesn't look like much yet but it sure does purr.
Thanks for sharing the links!!
