View Full Version : 2010 State of the Union Address
IMO, the president is delivering a speech worthy of comparison to Franklin Pierce's fourth state of union address that he sent to congress in 1856 <<LINK (http://www.infoplease.com/t/hist/state-of-the-union/68.html)>>.
Evidenced by their sporadic and uncertain applause, the Democrats in the audience (other than Ms. Pelosi and Mr. Biden, who are giddy) seem as skeptical as the Republicans across the aisle.
The artful insult; I think we have the initial stages of a new thread category...

Man really going for the heart-strings at the moment. I think I threw up in my mouth.
Among my issues with this president is that he wants it both ways. The speech he just delivered offered numerous examples of this dynamic.
He wants politicians to rise above partisanship, but never turns down an opportunity to take a jab at Republicans.
He wants to hold those who "game the system" accountable when it is an established fact that his presidential campaign sought to do just that.
He presumes to lecture congress on how it should to its job and yet talks about the Constitution and separation of powers.
He wants to be known as a great speaker and hard worker and then delivers a terrible speech that displays a lack of critical editing and clearly needed more rehearsal.

I made the mistake of having supper to this. whatever one would care to call it.
The word Bullsh*t came to my mouth more than once.
The Republican response is great!
I don't understand how he can propose fiscal conservation and at the same time urge congress to quickly pass another stimulus plan. Furthermore, how can he freeze all government spending in 2011 outside of those he mentioned, but at the same time talk about new programs that don't seem to fit under any of said categories?

Furthermore, how can he freeze all government spending in 2011 outside of those he mentioned, but at the same time talk about new programs that don't seem to fit under any of said categories?FWIW, I noticed those same contradictions--as did those who (politely) scoffed at him when he gave himself yet more wiggle room. The freeze won't go into effect until next year. Plenty of time to spend until then.

Obama's freeze is a horribly callous joke. After increasing the eligible areas by double digits, he now promises a freeze them. That just establishes the new base line at an unconscionable high mark.
It's like an alcoholic increases his alcohol consumption by 25% and when confronted by his family graciously agrees to freeze it at the current rate of consumption.
What's with that?

Nothing pertinent to add here. I agree with most of what has been said...
But, WOW, Pelosi has GIGANTIC hands. Like, freakishly large... She looked like she was clapping with fins!
I KNEW she wasn't from this planet...
All combat troops out of Iraq by August? Wow.
Has anyone told Buck this thing might be over before he gets to a team?
We may need him back here in the USA more.
(fm my own dumb assumtion) BHO may be learning that words do not make the man.
I was wrong. He hasn't learned a thing.
He presumes to lecture congress on how it should to its job and yet talks about the Constitution and separation of powers.
Don't forget that he took a direct stab at the supreme court too.
To me, the speech was tepid political pablum - at best - and both the POTUS and Congress (surprisingly, in an election year) appeared to be only half-heartedly engaged in the entire prime time special put on for the American voting and tax paying audience.
I am certainly glad I do not have to manage this apparently soon to be re-emerging issue anymore (attchd pic) - however - I must give him credit for recognizing the value of and explicit proposal to ease the lending of $$ to encourage small business community development in the country.
And so it goes...

Glad to have missed it..I was on the radio playing with mores code most of the night, in fact heard a lot of folks on last night.. Talked to one guy in PA, that has not been on for about a year, but because of the one.. He got on.
Then the fracken DC news carried a lot about, so I just went to bed...
Damm he is controlling my life .. ;)

I am not asking for any specifics, just opinions, but is it realistic to think this is going to happen? Is it more likely that this was just a promise to please his followers, much like his promise over a year ago to close GITMO in a year?

fng13The president left himself considerable wiggle room politically by saying that "combat troops" would be out by the end of August.
This distinction is like the one he made earlier this month when his administration handed out a no-bid contract (http://professionalsoldiers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27318) unrelated to the nation's defense.
The president will be able to say of the remaining soldiers that their roles center around force protection and support, not combat. And from there, he can tell his supporters that he has done what he said he would do.
My $0.02.

Yep...welcome to the nebulous world of being labeled as being in an 'advisory capacity' for the purposes of political weasle-ability and voter sensibility - and remember, it's an election year for Congress.

He is like a bumble bee in the spring. Going from one issue to another, sprinkling just enough Obama dust to effect really nothing.
At the risk of being simplistic, IMHO why worry about Obama doing much of anything, his MO seems consistently predictable...
1) Read pretty words from the tele-prompters.
2) Discuss his biography.
3) Do nothing substantive either way, other than still criticize Bush with adolescent angst, 1/4 through his first term.
4) Repeat.
It takes courage to lead, and this man has none, zero, zilch. Which is why both the left and the right are marginalizing him. He might well go down as the biggest zero POTUS in history.

It was disappointing that BHO's campaigning speech skills (i.e. likableness to the masses) suddenly returned.
Also having the equivalent of a "laugh reel" in the applause of reps, chiming in on cue like on the Letterman show, is inappropriate. Silent pauses in monologs are important to absorb and reflect on the information of the last statement.

This!
It also bothers me how staged all of the reactions were. It makes the entire speech seem so disingenuous. Also, his remarks about how he sympathizes with the common man seem laughable to me. As it does when most politicians try to use such appeal to the masses. I very much doubt that the majority of them know the hardship of the common man. I do not think that not being able to by that brand new lexus this year or a country home due to the recession counts as knowing the difficulties by families losing their homes or jobs.

Actually, quite a few liberals found a lot to criticize about the speech. I have this image of Obama out on a limb sawing it off between himself and the trunk. Go Obama!

Nope - not even close. And look at all that I've accomplished for the US as a result. :)
Was your assumption based on the assumption that I would feel differently if the speaker was from the GOP?
Or just: "That's the way it is done; so why try to improve the old way of doing things"?
Looks like the market responded well to his speech. Just like it has seemed to do as of late.

One of the best things I heard last night came from an audience member of the FoxNews sponsored focus group conducted by Frank Luntz:
one Philadelphia focus group member said this speech shows Obama is the greatest conservationist on earth — he recycles all his campaign speeches.

Well, I too watched the speech, I am reminded of being in church on a Sunday as a youth in a Baptist (African American) Church where all I could think about is "when is he gonna be finished" Where the preacher kept asking the congregation to give more because there was not enough in the collection plate. To me, even though there were some "ok" points, it was addressed at trying to get everyone to see that "Its not all my fault, they are not playing fair". Would I like to see America concerned with America and the growth of this nation...hell yeah. But it's going to take more than a few words aimed solely at the Republican Party (which he glared at all night with sarcasm), to make that happen.

I guess I just keep hoping that I will hear a powerful politician give a genuine speech in my lifetime. I got lots of time though so it might happen.:D
Although one that does come to mind is President Bush's address to nation after 9/11

As much as I disagree with pretty much everything single decision the current administration has taken, Frank Luntz is a moronic manipulator and any focus group results by him should never be used as a reference.

I hope that I do not have to take it any further than that. Word to the wise.
