I am neither 18x or Rep63 but I think posting here is still in the spirit of the thread (please delete or move otherwise).
This past Monday I swore sworn in to the ARNG (B co 1st Bn 20th SFG) as a prior-service NQP program soldier. The ship date is indefinite but probably May, depending on when they can line me up for PLDC, Abn, etc.

Luckily I have a bottle of advil in the cabinet downstairs. And I'm sure it would be a great exercise in learning to be the grey man. Just checking in. I'm currently in SFQC 1A. We're headed toward our 3rd week; more Land Nav. I'm under Sergeants XXXXX and XXXXXXX. Both seem very fair and decent men.
Basic and Airborne were a joke in comparison (as we're reminded by the cadre almost daily). I really enjoy being here (minus the gig-pit :boohoo ). If this is just a taste of how the SF community is, I'm glad I chose it. Thanks to everyone on this board for your advice, its been helpful in deed.

They sorta group em together. I was in a Co that had a platoon and a half of 18xers. But the other Co that graduated with us was ALL 18Xers... 4 platoons, 200-something 18Xers. I guess our platoon(s) were the excess...
As for Reception, I know it was only a week for us. You're on a schedule, so they zip you in and out. I know there were guys I talked to who were there upwards of 5 weeks. But I guess it depends.

I was in a company at OSUT with two full platoons of 18x's. It shouldn't take you more than a week at reception, unless some paperwork or administrative bs is out of order...and if it really just takes you a week to get out of shape, you better stop reading this and do more PT and hope you don't get stuck there. They don't allow running or PT while your'e there, so you have to do it when your stuck in your bay awaiting the next accountability formation (weekends). They do have a Fat, Tired, and Useless, er, I mean, a Fitness Training Unit for those who can't pass the simplest of PT tests.

Thanks to all on this board, especially the cadre that trained me. I was always fortunate to be connected with cadre and more experienced students that could mentor me in the ways I needed. Rep 63's:
I think it was in 1963 that the B team I was assigned to in the 12th SFG(A) stationed at NAS Sandpoint (Seattle) got it's first group of REP 63's. As a diver I was assigned as the "lifeguard" in the swim test for these people. At first we tested them in the swim pool at the NAS but later (Scheduling problems.) we tested them in Lake Washington. Most of them failed the swim test. (Had to rescue a few.)
I don't recall the number who came into the program; however, I do remember the number who made it through the whole program... One! I'm still in touch with him now. :D
Most of these people were trying to avoid service in Vietnam by getting into the reserve; however, at that time it was hard to find a Reserve slot. The SF Reserve was still pretty open at that time, thus we got a few that were willing to try anything to avoid Vietnam service until they found out what it really took to be SF. :munchin

I'll see you there, I'm shipping out on an 18X contract on June 7th. My recruiter is doing what he can to extend me so that I can "enjoy" my 21st on the 10th. Any idea what they do for birthdays at reception, if anything?

The NCOs there get together and buy you a cake, which you get to eat while the NCOIC sings Happy Birthday with the Colonel.
Then they PT you and call you names until you puke it all up.
Sorry, but the Army does not recognize your birthday as a holiday.
Welcome to the big green machine.

You could run the "belt line". I've seen that happen before. Let one guy know and then it becomes public. In this case it's already happened.

Count on wasting away in 30th AG for at least two weeks, an 8-day stay is what every new private dreams of. It's not immposible just very rare (unless things have changed since summer '03). That place is just terrible. Don't get in any fights and wash your hands constantly, the Sand Hill plague is mean son of a bitch. Took me six weeks to kick it.

Swindelous - I would be happy to call my brother and ask him for you. He's the 1SG for a BCT Company in Ft. Maybe we could arrange to have the b'day experience follow you through the rest of your training too! Never forget - It's a small world. Peregrino

As with the first reply in this thread, I will also say that this may not apply as I am not actually either an 18X or a REP-63. But, based on the fact that the aforementioned note was never kicked back then, I guess, I can be counted in as well...
I pretty much posted a similar bio in the intro thread but now I have just found this one so... I am a prior service F.O., did a couple of tours in Iraq, dig the life, and now I am an NQP at 3/20th SFG. My SFAS date isn't in set in concrete yet, but it will likely be the January '06 class, based on all now-available variables.

I was referencing "Little late, little old, but why not"- meaning I the last post was in December so my post was a little late and the thread was "old", but why not post. I wasn't applying the late, old, why not attitude towards myself. Yeah, that would be a piss-poor attitude. Sorry for the confusion.
I am not an 18x, but this thread appears to be the proper place to post my update.
Last Saturday I finished up my medical with MEPS, and was sworn into the Colorado ARNG (5th Bn. 19th SFG) as a prior-service NQP.

Hey guys, I graduated in September, am now overseas and have recently been messaging with some REP-63s and 18Xs who've had all kinds of questions. I just thought I'd toss a couple of those answers out here in case others of you out there might have similar questions. Again I'm an FNG on a team and do not claim to know much, but I do know what it's like to be a new 18X/REP-63 on a team and to go from the course right into a deployment.
The best advice I can give is to remember during the course that the skills you learn now may some day directly contribute to your and your teammates' survival. Strange as it may sound this applies equally if not more so to OSUT as it does to all the "high speed" SF skills you'll learn in the Q course. I remember the class we had in OSUT on the Mark 19, I thought hey I'm going SF and this is a regular infantry weapon so I don't really need to remember this stuff. Well guess what my position is on my team when we convoy: Mark 19 gunner. And we convoy a lot. I felt like a turd when I didn't know my head from my ass with that weapon. Pay attention and try to retain as much as possible, you never know when you'll need it.
The other big lesson I've learned is that I'm only a medic when medical shit is going down, otherwise I'm the junior-junior weapons guy, engineer, intel guy, commo guy and grunt laborer. There is so much stuff that has to be done on a team that everyone has to pitch in and help with everybody else's job as much as possible. This is especially true for the medics because at least where I am there is not much medicine to be done. I arrived on the team knowing medicine cold, but because I was a REP-63 I knew very little about other things like heavy weapons, demo and commo equipment. It was a steep learning curve. This goes back to retaining as much as possible during the pipeline.
A lot has been written about physical training prior to shipping for OSUT, but I'll just throw in my take on it: Train for the APFT because that's what you'll be doing most during OSUT. You ruck enough during OSUT to prep you for SOPC and then you do plenty during SOPC to prep you for SFAS. Just getting through those phases and moving right into the next will keep you in shape and give you a huge advantage, especially at selection, versus the guys that come from the regular Army. Remember that a lot of these guys who seem out of shape compared to you have just come from fighting a war and were not afforded the luxury of a regular pt schedule.
Finally, never forget why you're in the pipeline: to fight in the war on terror as an SF soldier. Make no mistake about it, if you get through you will go to war. This applies to Guard guys (like me) as much as to the active guys. I told myself I understood that when I signed up, but I don't think I really did. Never forget it. I'm stoked as hell to be here, being on a team at war is the best experience of my life. Life at SWC sucks a lot of the time and there's very little you can do about it, but life on a team is a whole different story. Don't let SWC get you down, especially you medics!
Feel free to PM me with any specific questions, I'll reply as I'm able. Hope this helps. Later, Pete

I also wish the best of luck to anyone who will attempt to achieve greatness from that little paper with 18x on it. I just hope people will be as willing to help me as I am to help others. With great teamwork, everything can be accomplished better, faster, and thoroughly. I will be sure to track progress for all to see. Thanks Again.
I haven't signed on here for awhile, but I wanted to drop a note to say thanks to all the SF types on this board. I am an X-Ray who just graduated the Q-course a few months ago. I have only posted here a handful of times, but over time (starting before I even began the whole 18X thing) I have gleaned an incredible amount of info from the experienced guys around here. I'm glad to report that I got my renegotiation done today.:lifter
After a worthless visit to one doctor, I tracked down one of the docs for the local college football team. I figured he should be pretty good. At first, I couldn't get an appointment because he was booked solid. I tracked down his e-mail address and sent him a message thinking he’d never read it. Luckily, I was wrong and he saw me three days later. Talk about service.
Besides being a top-notch doc himself, he is good friends with an Air Force doc who has worked with quite a few PJ and Recon guys with broken collarbones. He took some time to look me over to see if anything indicated I would have issues with rucking. He said I should be good to go. The bone smoothed over nicely and has healed solid.
Like everyone on here said, I was just better off doing what the doc said and healing up. You can’t rush it. I'm just glad to have a solid date and I'm anxious to get started. Until the 3rd I'll just continue keep the head down, PT like mad (safely), and stay off the mountain bike. :D

I posted over in the 20th Group thread that I was hired but thought I would post over here now that I have been to a few drills.
Without a doubt this was the best decision I have ever made in my life. For those of you that lurk here and read the posts and wonder what it would be like to wear the Green Beret, I tell you this. Pick it up.
When I go to drill every month I'm surrounded two groups of men that strengthen my resolve and push me to improve myself mentally and physically. The Qualified guys who push us to not only meet the standard but set it, and the other Non-Quals in the program that share my drive and determination to live the dream of being SF.
If for some reason I am not what Special Forces is looking for and I don't get selected, I will consider myself honored to have had the opportunity to be trained by and train along side some of the finest soldiers to ever put on any uniform.
Do not let fear of failure keep you from attempting to walk the path.

Now I'm officially done with Phase II... bring on the Delta Course.D
You are not done with anything, you have gotten through a piece of the 'official' training, you need to keep those skills honed while you learn more. Become a sponge. Your brain is going to be abused, put up wet, wrung out, and abused some more in the D course. Perfect is just about good enough, your Team's health depends on you doing your primary job right, your life depends on knowing the skills you were taught in Phase II.
The entire time you are in SFQC, and God willing, SF, you will be learning; you will never be 'done' with anything, but constantly improving yourself, your skills, and your Teammate's skills.
I wish I could get you to write an essay on why what I just wrote is so important to all of you SF Candidates. No worries, if what I wrote doen't sink in and rattle a nerve, your instructors and your Team Daddy will reinforce it.
Prester John

Can I re-phrase? Or is it too late to attempt to get back into the circle? :D
I couldn't agree with you more in what you said. I guess I was simply trying to put a status on my progress. Maybe, "I just met the requirements of the second phase of the Q course, and am now looking forward to maintaining, developing, and honing the skills learned there." would have been a better statement?

It took 7 months but I finally got it. 18X, 20061227. Grade waiver was approved so I get to keep my E5 and when I get to Benning I get to see if I'm repeating OSUT or not! :D
Thanks again for the words of wisdom and allowing me to lurk here and learn. Enjoy your holidays.
Mike

Thank you. Yes, I have been selected, I just mean that no matter what, thus far, we are still known as the "18Xs" is all.
Again, thanks for everything PS.com

Just received my contract on January 8, 2007. Just purchased "Get Selected for Special Forces" and look forward to information it will provide me. Thank you all for your contributions to these forums, I've learned a lot and plan to learn a lot more prior to my departure date.

Good Luck to you guys. You will hear a lot of tips of the trade on this site and take them all to heart. It is you guys that got to gut it out. Good luck to you and I hope to see you and shake your hands in about a year when you sign into a group.

I was an 18X, I was just selected in the Nov/Dec class to become and 18E. I wanted to thank Reaper and many others who through this forum have contributed greately to my success. To any who read this, know that reading the many threads on the forum will help you if you do your research. The most improtant thing is to never give up, Never! I can now look forward to the long road ahead ....and learning Russian. So once again thanks to all who made it possible for an ignorant 18X to learn a thing or two.

Good evening. My name is Justin, I graduated high school last year and after much effort--and the intervention of two senior SF NCO's and an individual at USAREC HQ, for whom I am eternally appreciative--I received an 18X enlistment contract yesterday morning, with a tentative ship date of 21 May 2007, two days after my 18th birthday. I would just like to say thank you to all the Quiet Professionals for sharing their input, particularly Warrior-Mentor, Team Sergeant, and longtab.
Now back to lurking.
Cast or tab,
