Hey all, congrats and good luck. I finished in Apr. 06 as an 18x. Just remember: 1) Don't quit;
2) Student company is the worst get done fast and avoid that place like the plague;
3) Watch out for a TAC named Seymor if he is still there;
4) Keep your mouth shut and let the prior service NCO's lead the way because they have seniority and when you are where they are you aren't going to want to listen to punk kids ruin your leadership. You might have all the right answers but his are right too and he's under way more pressure than you are. 5) We need you but not if you think that its all sexy becuase it isn't and your in for a shock;
6) Don't listen to Joe rumor...he doesn't know jack about anything. Just let the Q unfold day by day and let the idiots talk about it while you live it. I've been on an ODA for 10 months and I have yet to spend a day when something came up that we didn't see comming and had to deal with so practice staying flexible there rather than being out of your element when you get to Grp.

Most of all GOOD LUCK! Hopefully you won't need it.

Good evening. My name is Justin, I graduated high school last year and after much effort--and the intervention of two senior SF NCO's and an individual at USAREC HQ, for whom I am eternally appreciative--I received an 18X enlistment contract yesterday morning, with a tentative ship date of 21 May 2007, two days after my 18th birthday. I would just like to say thank you to all the Quiet Professionals for sharing their input, particularly Warrior-Mentor, Team Sergeant, and longtab.

Now back to lurking.

Not to break the flow of the subject, but I figured this would be a good place to ask. Any of you QPs done any time as a recruiter, career counselor, or retnetion NCO? I've got a question I'd like to PM you about extending/reenlisting. Thanks a lot.

I went to meps a few days ago with the plan on enlisting with an 18x option. My recruiter told me I was good to go and that I would have no problems. Needless to say my recruiter was wrong (big suprise there).

My particular problem is that I have a waiver for a broken wrist that has kept me from getting airborne as apart of my contract. My wrist is actually fine now but I still have some pins that were used to hold the bone in place. The pins can be removed. I was told by the counselor that I could later volunteer for Airborne once I was in basic. He sent a waiver request to Ft. Benning to see if I could still be offered Airborne in my contract. So far I'm being told that I have a 50/50 shot at the waiver going through. Seeing as how the injury isn't in my lower extremeties and that I have full function and mobility.

In the mean time, I was wondering if any QP's might have any suggestions for alternate MOS's that would serve as a good segway to SF? I am currently considering 98x. I am trying to come up with a good quality contingency that will compliment SF training just as well as infantry training. Do any readers have any recomendations?

Not to hijack, and I'm certainly not a QP, but as someone who has worked with 98 series folks, don't do it. If you want to find something that will ease you into SF, go with a combat arms MOS like 11 series or even Cav Scout. Sure you might learn a language with the 98 series, but most of your time will be spent in a dark room doing "secret" stuff. I won't go into it since some is classified, but you won't be doing much tactical work unless you get lucky.

Good luck.

Look at the MOSes on an ODA and pick the one you want, then select the non-SF CMF that corresponds to it.

18B-11B, 18C-12B, etc.

I would not count on anything that is not written down. These "someone will take care of you later" promises never seem to work out.

If it were me, I would refuse to sign unless I got what I wanted. See another recruiter if necessary. If three or four tell you no, then you might be getting close to the truth.

You might also consider a Rep-63 enlistment with a National Guard SF unit.

Good luck.

I want to go into the 18x program in March 2008, I am wondering how soon/late should I go to a recruiter and get the ball rolling, I am prior enlisted USMC Infantry, so I won't have to do OSUT, from what my friend said that is almost at Robbin Sage, I will go straight to Airborne, then SOPC. I don't want to go to the recruiter too early so they don't try to get me to go earlier, because I have a wedding Feb. 16th, but I want enough time for processing. Thank you for the help...

As soon as you want to. They are going to try to talk you into shipping when they want you to not when you want to go. Just be firm with the career counselor and things will go your way.

As for the OSUT issue, I had a prior service 0311 in my OSUT class so anything is possible.

I am now talking to the recruiter trying to get all my ducks in a row to ship in March and it is sounding like they are no longer offering the 18x program for prior service. Looks like I will have to go the long route to go selections. I am prior service Marine Corps Infantry so I will basically just check in to an infantry unit I believe.

A couple questions:
-How long will I need to be in a conventional unit before requesting SFAS orders?
-Will it help asking to be stationed on Ft. Bragg? (Something about stabilization?)
-Since this is one time that I will have the ball in my court for a while; are there some things I should demand on my contract (i.e. Airborne)?

Any advice is greatly appreciated, I just found out last night I can not do 18x and was a little devastated at first since I really don’t want to go to a conventional unit, deploy before I have a chance of going to selection and have my dreams pushed back another year plus. I have no problem with deploying, I have already been to Iraq three times, but I am determined in my goals with Special Forces.

Thank you for any advice!

Jake

Jake,
A few years back I found myself in a similiar situation. If you are as determined to go to SFAS as you say, here is a route you could take. Here is my recommendation.

-Attempt to get airborne, and or Fort Bragg as your first duty station, last time I checked there was a 1 yr time in station requirement that could delay your Q course date, IF you get selected.

-As soon as you can go to an SF brief to get more details on the dates, then, take his instructions from there.

Keep in mind, if you do not meet the requirements for SF or dont make it, you will be where you are.

Good Luck

Update:
With the help of a couple members of this site I was directed to a man in USAREC and he set the recruiters and station commander straight. 18x is still available for prior service, and I hope nobody else has this issue. If any other prior service personnel run into this issue I will be more than happy to pass on the email address of man that helped me out, and forward the actual regulations stating acceptance into the program. I am going to MEPS next month, and I should ship late February.

Happy Hunting....

I am still active duty Navy with SERE, EAOS is 20NOV08; swear into the Army and ship out on 21NOV08. Another plus is that I got to keep my rank of E-6. Again I would like to express my appreciation for all the QP's advice and most of all Warrior-Mentor for his invaluable book. For anyone still interested in going SF, you will only set yourself up for success by purchasing their book. My biggest recommendation for anyone interested is to remain positive, apply common courtesy priciples when dealing with the recruiters and counselors, and things will work out provided you meet the basic requirements.

Well the FBI check isn't in yet, but to avoid any possible problems with a clearance she and I parted ways...

not saying the clearance was the only problem;)

That is to say, no waiver necessary and I'm sure that I'll see you at Bragg in no time at all. I think I owe you a beer.

Seeing as our dates for OSUT and jump school are the same (on our initial contracts) I am guessing they are different in ATRRS (see above). Check your ATRRS and see if that is the case.

I am very impressed with the recruiting procedure. Job consoling & complete physical in one day, completed both, signed contract, and awarded E4. Start to finish took me around 5 weeks of contact with my local recruiter and a few phone calls while still AD USAF.

Well Gentlemen,

Not sure where to put this but...

It's with a heavy heart that I hang up my hat in regards to pursuing a career in Special Forces. I always said I would not quit until the door was absolutely closed and after the initial med discharge and another three years of doing everything with-in my grasp to combat the ITB injury I have decided the journey is over.

Far from wasted time however, I learned a hell of a lot from a rare bread of men, and had the chance to help out a little here and there as well, which I will always see as a very real honor.

I'd like to specifically thank those on this site who taught me so much by their example, wisdom, and at times rightly so strict hand.

My prayers will always be with the lads who continue to carry on the fight.

Best regards and thank you TS for the site, a true resource!

Sean out

Careers are interesting things, chances are you will have 5 before your time is up.

Know this little brother, you're a true champion to attempt such an endeavor to become SF. We have seen first hand the many efforts of those who reported for Special Forces training who all left better men beit, they finished or not.

Am I a failure because I was not selected or apointed to run AT&T as the new CEO, (not true, I applied on line, open source), or I missed being elected County Commissioner back home four years ago. What of my family who has seen me fail at most attempts to advance my career.

What I continue to learn is this, I'm surprised what a few good people can accomplish when we collectively work togehter. I'm a big fan of the team, put enough smart guys in the same room, and they'll put a man on the moon.

Sean, stay with us, participate were you can. Keep you weapon ready, read every Richard, TS, Warrior Mentor post, ask questions, stay true to you convictions, love your family, call you folks, visit an old friend, learn to cook, build something cool.

Because you reported for duty, you're ok by me, and welcome by my fire anytime.

Wet Dog, over...

I posted earlier which resulted in several young 18xer's PM'ing, asking if the 18X program is going away. SF command will do what is in the best interest of SF missions world wide. SF will open new doors, close some, and open doors again all in the best interest of the command.

Some soldiers enlist with the idea of Special Forces, or no Army at all. Such thinking is not in the best interest of SF or the US Army in general. What if you failed, got hurt, missed training, or unable to complete Special Forces training, do you just say, "Hell with this, I'm going home!" If that is the case, then don't even show up. Stay home and do something else.

I had several friends who for whatever reason failed SF. None of them were ever bitter, one became a Rigger, another a weapons armorer. And you know what, they were the best riggers and armorers I ever met. They had army pride. Another ETS'd, finshed college, then Law school, returned to the army with JAG, and had a lot of fun with the 18th ABN Corp., and 82nd ABN Div. After 6 years of college he missed the life. He finshed his assignments then entered the reserves to be closer to family.

You will never know where your careers will take you, have maturity in decision making, have confidence in your choices.

SFQC has gone from as little as 250 graduates per year to exceeding, I've heard 750 per year.

To all -

Who's to say what the future may bring, just stay focused on the 25M target.

My training was interrupted not once, but three times. When I entered the army, I was a SF baby, a REP63. When I finished ABN trng, I was held over three weeks mowing lawns at Ft. Benning waiting for orders. When I arrived Ft. Bragg, I was out of cycle and ended up pulling SWC duty 6 months, then again, in my career, one year waiting for yet another course.

Do you believe in your calling as a SF soldier? Then surrender the fear and go be a great soldier.

I welcome any response.

Wet Dog:

Thank you for the words of wisdom. I do firmly believe that my calling in life is to serve as a Special Forces soldier. I am convinced that I have the intelligence and maturity to be an asset on an ODA and that I could take a message to Garcia. That being said, I realize that my amateur self-analysis means little to nothing; and if the SFAS cadre disagree, then I would gladly serve in whatever capacity I am placed in until I receive another opportunity to prove myself.

Whenever I tell my friends and family that I am enlisting and what I am enlisting for, one of their first questions is, “What if you don’t make it?” I personally see this as a win-win situation. If I do “make it” I will earn the opportunity to serve as a Special Forces soldier, but if I do not, I will have the opportunity to learn some vital skills that will probably make me more of an asset on an ODA, should I obtain another opportunity to attend selection and the Q course.

On the other hand, I intend to make the most of my time before I ship out in order to temper my mind and body. I have about six months before I leave, and I am going to use it to the fullest to improve myself. So my strategy in all of this is to prepare as best as I can to be the best soldier possible, no matter where I end up serving.

I apologize for the long-winded response; this has been on my mind for some time.

Thanks for posting.

WD,

You hit the nail on the head. I have hit a shoulder setback while stationed at Fort Living Room. My brother preached to me over and over again, that the goal is to be the best at what ever I do and focus on the 25m target. He told me that I should just get my foot in the door first (as a 68w or 11b) to see if I even liked the army, let alone SF. I think a lot of 18xer's sign up, having no real idea what SF is, or what they are getting into. It's a uphill battle, and the odds are stacked against you. Going 18x you take a giant leap, instead of going 11b and progressing to Airborne, and if you like it progress to SF or Ranger.

The two sides of the coin that I find myself at is, 1) 18x is a great opportunity for a civilian to join the ranks of SF. The odds are stacked against you, but if you decide this route, then mentally you must have a zen like focus. If at one point you doubt, and think "what if I dont...." then you are not prepared (speaking for myself). But failure trying to make SF is not failure at all, you get to join the ranks of Airborne or Leg troopers. 2) You join the Army as 11b or 68w or whatever, and gradually work your way up. You're progress isn't as fast as 18x, but you progress in stages none the less. Eventually you will make it to your goal, or you can decide that being Airborne is where your home is.

Personally, I think some 18xer's that are joining lately have a screwed sense of reality. They want a quick route instead of the best route for themselves to their goals. To me, being SF isn't about the Hollywood image shooting a gun from the hip, its about the brotherhood, its about helping those that cant help themselves, making the world a better place one hell hole at a time. Its about living in 3rd world countries, eating, drinking, and sharing a bed with the populace of those 3rd world countries 6-9 months at a time. Personally, I just see a lot of young 20 something year old's entering 18x with no clue what it even means to be SF.

This is just my opinion, take it for what its worth.

P.S. Warning to future 18xer's, don't confuse cocky arrogance for real confidence.

I can't emphasize enough how steep the learning curve was. I was a REP 63 who was lucky enough (and I DO MEAN lucky) to be invited to an active duty team. I thought that I was ready to go after SFQC but had YEARS of learning to do on just the conventional Army stuff. TTPs aren't something you just read in a book and apply. Infantry tactics, our trade and craft with the indig, has to be mastered. Once you get about 5 years under your belt, you're probably about there. If you come to SF "flat-footed" with no background, you're already behind.

That, and other things need to be factored into someone's decision to come to SF. I appreciate your honest self assessment. BTW, cocky arrogance will get you nowhere. Those guys assessing you can see the difference in a second.

Best of luck. I hope it works out for you!

Good evening gentlemen. I was hoping to gather some advice and possibly some points of contact from anyone that can either relate or help. Any assistance at all would be greatly appreciated.
I am currently in the Navy right now for the next few days at least. I have been on a couple of combat deployments as an FMF corpsman and want more than anything to operate and go downrange with Quiet Professionals such as yourselves as a Green Beret particularly an 18D.
I have submitted my Blue to Green package a while ago waiting to hear from MEPS to recently hear from a recruiter not even my own that a new message has come out today at exactly 1200 locking out E-4 and E-5 prior service members from joining the Army, especially18X not being an option. Just so happened to happen last minute just prior from my separation date. I understand that the recruiters receive these messages and have to abide by them, however, had the package been accepted from MEPS when the October message was effective and after my package was submitted this shouldn’t have been a problem however, not the case. There are exceptions for everything, hoping this case be one of them. I have researched and exhausted every means to help my situation within my resources. I don’t dread on the situation, but it is certainly arduous to help a situation in which is out of your hands.
I’ve heard of some people in the past having a point of contact that can basically help them as a prior service member receive the 18X contract and understand that may be unlikely but possible. A particular example is a post made by user BR9545:

"Good Morning Gentlemen,

I have an update for any other lurkers or regulars who might be in the situation described above. Several weeks ago I befriended two Colonels from the SOCOM COC. I explained my situation (stated above) to which their reply was "It shouldnt be like that" and that as soon as they returned to the office this would be run to ground. I have since been corresponding with one of the Colonels, a SORC recruiter, and a MR. xxxxx from the HRC. The word is, if your COC of command is willing to release you then you can go 18X via BtG. Now as per the SORC, the pipeline will not differ from the initial entry 18X other than you will attend the 4 week warror transition course instead of BCT. 11B OSUT, Airborne, etc, etc will remain the same for you (unless you are a former 03' Marine). So this being said, the BtG option solely teeters on YOUR branch and COC releasing you from your EAOS. If that is an issue, then the SORC stated that it would just be easier to ETS, and go to your hometown recruiter as a prior service and join up 18X. If MEPS gives you flak, and you definatley qualify, then SORC said they will get involved. Its not a perfect solution, but it is a workable path. As Hooahman stated, the NGSF is available for you, but personally I want Active duty. So you make your decision. If you need specific contacts for anyone stated above then feel free to PM me. I dont feel comfortable putting names out on the net. This is the "word" I got. HTH

Very Respectfully,
BR9545"

I’m not expecting anyone to all of a sudden bend over backwards for me being someone whom of which you don’t know nor you can vouch for, however, I assure you I will be a great value to the Special Forces community being given the opportunity I can and will then prove such.
Thank you for the opportunity to post this message and for any assistance or feedback you provide.

Very Respectfully,

Jet
