FBI arrest four in alleged plot to bomb Bronx synagogues, shoot down plane

The FBI busted a homegrown terror cell late Wednesday night as the men sneaked around a Jewish temple in Riverdale planting what they thought were packages of C-4 explosives, sources told the Daily News.
The four men also allegedly had what they believed was a working Stinger missile in their car: officials said they wanted to shoot down a plane near Stewart Air National Guard Base.
Sources said the four men were arrested after a year long investigation that began when an informant connected to a mosque in Newburg said some militants wanted to buy eplosives.
FBI agents posing as militants sold them what they thought were C-4 and a plane-downing Stinger missile.
The weaponry was all phony.
The men were arrested as they planted fake bombs in front of the Riverdale Temple in the Bronx and under cars parked in front of the synagogue.
They also allegedly planned to blow up a second synagogue, the Riverdale Jewish Center.
Witnesses said an NYPD vehicle blocked a black SUV outside the temple and then officers broke in the windows and handcuffed the four men inside the car.
All four men were US-born.
Arrested was alleged ringleader James Cromitie of Newburgh, the son of an Afghan immigrant and his wife.
Cromitie served a long stretch in prison in the past.
Alleged henchment David Williams, Onta Williams and Leguerre Payen were busted with him.
Sources said the three were jailhouse converts to Islam.
"This shows the real risks we face from homegrown terror and jailhouse converts, and the need for constant vigilance," said Rep. Pete King (R-NY).
The four alleged terrorists are expected to be arraigned Thursday in White Plains federal court.

...or how much easier it would be to break them out (from a logistical point of view) vs. Gitmo?
...or how much easier it would be to break them out (from a logistical point of view) vs. Gitmo?
We were building this new High Security facility years ago down in TX just south of Austin.
It is a beautiful facility. It has the newest Dorms, the best Gyms and educational facilities West of the Mississippi. They have the newest re-educational programs and they even have a small water park to help relieve the stress of the inmates. There is also a Hog Farm and Vegetable Farm as part of the facility so that there is little or no cost for food as they raise everything they need there.
There has never been a escape or even an attempted escape since the Facility was built. The facility also is the cheapest in the US for the cost per inmate.
Those Texans have devised the best Prison and I think we should send the GITMO boys up there and let the Texans show the rest of the US how to deal with dangerous Terrorist.
The trick is in the in-processing of the inmates.
Step 1 - Jo Bob calls the roster when they get off the bus and signs them in to the facility.
Step 2 - Bo gives the new inmates their in-doc brief and tells them what will be allowed and what will not.
Step 3 - Jo Bob handles the Delousing of the inmates. It is a simple process and the inmates seam to like it.
First they strip down and are issued a bathing suit as they have to take a shower, be inspected and be deloused as needed. Then as they have had a stressful day they are moved over to the water park and allowed 2 turns going down the big Water Tube. It is great as it is 4 stories high and is a lot of fun. Well Jim Bob makes sure they are orderly and no one cuts in line and order is maintained as this is a Texas Correctional facility. After all inmates have made their 1st slide on the Great Allah Ride as Jim Bob like to call it he goes down to the water shed and turns off the Wood Chipper and lets the Hogs in to clean up the park before it open for the weekend for the Public so they can cover operational cost of the facility. The Warden sells 1/2 price spicy sausages and Beer at 15 cents a bottle.
Don't you just love Texas ingenuity in cutting cost and curbing crime.:D.

You know closing Gitmo would be a great idea if you are employed by the federal Gov or subcontract for them...
Just think, we spread out 250 of the worlds most hardcore islamic cowards in our prisons, prisons full of jihad wanna-be's and BINGO we turn out our own home-grown islamic jihadist by the thousands!!! ('cept these guys will know the difference between real C-4 and the fake stuff, and they will not think twice about getting a few AK's and going to the local school or mall, not to mention how to set up real, home-grown islamic jihadist "cells".) It will be "24" for real!
DHS will have those terror threats alerts in all colors and start selling individual DHS "Alert Bracelets" that change color everytime a "home grown" islamic coward blows up a local elementry school.
Yup, a grand idea if you work in the "private security" industry! You'll never look for work again!
Keep a DHS/ATF/FBI/sub-contractor employed, CLOSE GITMO!
First off I'd like to say thanks to the FEEB, and other folks who put the kybosh and smack down out on these scumbags. At least they didn't send a memo via messenger pigeon first and actually took action on the threat.
That being said could some of the QP's here educate me as to why myself and fellow Americans are actually paying for our mortal enemies to continue to exist. If they've been milked dry of their intel, and they no longer serve any utility to our cause why are they still breathing, being given subsistence and clean copies of the Quaran on a regular basis again?? I'm asking because the list the pros don't equal the cons on my list of benefit vs reward..

If the "one" is so adamant about closing Gitmo then I have a solution, 50% of the islamic terrorists go to prisons in Chicago, 25% Hawaii and the rest in Calif. Really doesn't matter , 75% of them will be released in five years and working for ACORN.
You sheeple that voted for the "one" and "change" well here it comes....
I noticed the "one" said "some will go to a SuperMax facility.... How many Mr "one", how many?? And the hundreds of others??? Maybe a nice little prisons all over the United States of America where they can "force multiply"??? And teach the true way of the koran, islam, IED's, beheading infidels, blowing up schools, recruiting more islamic cowards....
America you bought and paid for this one..... when the "one" closes Gitmo and moves the terrorists you can start counting until we have our first home grown "real" islamic cowards committing acts of terror right here in America.
Well done you democrats, well done.

There is a SuperMax here in the blue state of Colorado. I heard something on Hugh Hewitt about them coming here.

There has been a host of murders of Philadelphia police officers in the past two years. Investigators have tenatively uncovered one common denominator among the doers of these cowardly murders....interest in or conversion to the religion of islam while incarerated. Is this a trend or just coincidence?

There's only one problem....there's only 1 bed left at our SuperMax. Just heard this on the morning news.
If Barry wants to move these guys here, they'll have to bulid an extension to house them.
I wonder if Texas will release the plans for their water park and pig farm to us. :munchin

I can see Letterman now -
Hey, whatever happened to all those terrorists from Guantanamo? They went to Texas and the hogs ate 'em.
Īle du Diable is empty - as are many of the gulags. I'm sure there are NGOs looking for the possibility of such a contract. ;)

It's going to get a whole lot worse if/when "The Community Organizer" closes Gitmo. Like I said Gitmo has the hard-core individuals and I'd place a wager only about 5 are headed to "SuperMax".
As most LEO's know prison is an education for the amateur criminal.
Cops usually deal with criminals and crazies, if "The Community Organizer" moves the islamic fascists the LEO's with add a new element to their list "crusaders".
One can negotiate with criminals and crazies, they have a profit motive and really don't want to die for their "cause". Not so for the islamic fascist "crusaders".
Funny how DHS has not written a threat analysis "paper" on what will happen when "the one" decides not to close Gitmo but with his "Community Organizer" powers just "moves" the prisoners to American prisons instead.
Shit will hit the fan.

Gates defends decision to close Guantanamo prison
AP, 21 May 2009
Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the Obama administration had no choice but to order the shutdown of the prison at Guantanamo because "the name itself is a condemnation" of U.S. anti-terrorism strategy.
In an interview broadcast Friday on NBC's "Today" show, Gates called the facility on the island of Cuba "probably one of the finest prisons in the world today." But at the same time, he said it had become "a taint" on the reputation of America.

Why not have the GITMO miscreants repopulate Johnston atoll. That's be a fitting place for them to cool their heels and develop that cool glow in the dark look. It would even help us track them if in the misguided judgment they are 'rehabilitated' and we ever let them loose again. :D:munchin

Little did they know the plastic explosives packed into their car bombs and the plane-downing Stinger missile in their backseat were all phony - supplied by undercover agents posing as Pakistani militants linked to Al Qaeda.
The problem I have with this case - and all the others that have occured since 9/11 is that we (the USA) seem incapable of catching anybody that is remotely a serious threat, that is not a complete idiot.
Richard Reid the shoe bomber - Idiot.
The elderly JFK Bombers - more Idiots.
There have been others - more Idiots - and now these four guys - latest bunch of idiots.
I don't doubt their evil intentions - but unless we (our own FBI) wouldn't provide them with the explosives, the weapons, and the training they need, they would not know how to blow anything up and would not know where to get it.
If some day - we actually catch some real terriorist in action, before they actually announce themselves by blowing somehting up (which is unlikely - the real ones are too smart to get caught apparently), we can then be proud of ourselves - we won't need to hype the story for Fox News - it will be real. But until that happens - I guess arresting idiots is at least surving a useful purpose.

The jihadi virus in our jails.................
Michelle Malkin - Syndicated Columnist - 5/22/2009 8:15:00 AMBookmark and Share
President Obama's speech on homeland security was 6,072 words long. Curiously, he chose not to spare an "a," "and" or "uh" on the New York City terror bust that dominated headlines the morning of his Thursday address. Did the teleprompter run out of room?
After a yearlong investigation launched by the Bush administration, the feds cracked down on a ring of murder-minded black Muslim jailhouse converts preparing to bomb two Bronx synagogues and "eager to bring death to Jews." They also planned to attack a New York National Guard air base in Newburgh, NY, where the suspects lived and worshiped at a local mosque.
Not one word from the president on the jihadists' intended victims, motives or means.
No comfort for the reported targets in the Big Apple, still raw from the Scare Force One rattling that so vainly and recklessly simulated 9/11.
No condemnation for the accused plotters.
Why? Because doing so would force Obama to abandon his cottony "extremist ideology" euphemisms and confront the concrete truth. To borrow one of our obtuse president's favorite cliches, "let me be perfectly clear" about the reality Obama won't touch: America faces an ongoing Islamic jihad at home and abroad. Not merely "man-caused." But Koran-inspired. Yet, Obama refuses to spell out the centuries-old roots of the war that he claims he'll win faster, better and cleaner than any of his predecessors.
related article buttonMoreover, his push to transfer violent Muslim warmongers into our civilian prisons -- where they have proselytized and plotted with impunity -- will only make the problem worse. A brief refresher course for the left's amnesiacs about the festering jihadi virus in our jails and overseas:
In 2005, Bush administration officials busted a terrorist plot to attack infidels at military and Jewish sites in Los Angeles on the fourth anniversary of 9/11 or the Jewish holy days. It was devised by militant Muslim converts of Jam'iyyat Ul-Islam Is-Saheeh (Arabic for "Assembly of Authentic Islam") who had sworn allegiance to violent jihad at California's New Folsom State Prison.
Convicted terror conspirator Jose Padilla converted to Islam during a stint at a Broward County, FL, jail and reportedly fell in with terrorist recruiters after his release. Convicted "shoe bomber" Richard Reid converted to Islam with the help of an extremist imam in a British prison.
Aqil Collins, a self-confessed jihadist turned FBI informant, converted to Islam while doing time in a California juvenile detention center. At a terrorist camp in Afghanistan, he went on to train with one of the men accused of kidnapping and beheading Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl.
In East Texas, inmates were recruited with a half-hour videotape featuring the anti-Semitic rants of California-based Imam Muhammad Abdullah, who claims that the 9/11 terrorist attacks were actually carried out by the Israeli and U.S. governments.
Federal corrections officials told congressional investigators during the Bush years "that convicted terrorists from the 1993 World Trade Center bombing were put into their prisons' general population, where they radicalized inmates and told them that terrorism was part of Islam."
Despite the insistence of Obama and the Jihadi Welcome Wagon that our civilian prisons are perfectly secure, convicted terrorist aid Lynne Stewart helped jailed 1993 World Trade Center bombing/NY landmark bombing plot mastermind Omar Abdel-Rahman smuggle coded messages of Islamic violence to outside followers in violation of an explicit pledge to abide by her client's court-ordered isolation.
As I've reported previously, U.S. Bureau of Prison reports have warned for years that our civilian detention facilities are major breeding grounds for Islamic terrorists. There are still not enough legitimately trained and screened Muslim religious leaders to counsel an estimated 9,000 U.S. prison inmates who demand Islamic services. Under the Bush administration, the federal prison bureaucracy had no policy in place to screen out extremist, violence-advocating Islamic chaplains; failed to properly screen the many contractors and volunteers who help provide religious services to Islamic inmates; and shied away from religious profiling.
What's Obama's plan to prevent the jihadi virus from spreading? Washing hands and covering mouths won't work for this disease.........

I agree with all of what you say - I just don't beleve that we are very effective at it.
The logic of not being able to prove a positive with a negative should still apply. That is: We can't assume that the lack of major (or even minor) serious terriost activity in the USA, from foreign born, foreign trained, foreign funded terroists since 911 is proof that we are effective at finding and thwarting such activity. Nor can we assume that there is or is not a gag rule in effect ....etc. etc.
I do know, at least with the previous adminstration - they were desperate for a story to show that what they were doing was working, but all we ever got then - and apparently now - is "sting" operations.
Edit: I will give you - that this lack of activity is an apparent indication that what ever we are doing is working as a preventive measure.

Eric Gorski and Rachel Zoll - Associated Press Writers - 5/23/2009 4:40:00 AMBookmark and Share
NEW YORK - The arrest of four Muslim ex-convicts in an alleged homegrown terror plot in the Bronx is renewing fears about the spread of Islamic extremism in the nation's prisons.
At least two of the four men suspected of plotting to bomb synagogues and shoot down military airplanes converted to Islam behind bars. The alleged mastermind is also a convert, and the fourth man identified himself as a Muslim when he entered prison.
But this week's foiled plot is not the first terror scheme implicating Muslim convicts, and it comes despite reports of progress in screening chaplains and materials on Islam in the prison system.
"Basically, the threat is real," said Paul Rogers, past president of the American Correctional Chaplains Association. "Prisons have unstable people and people who are on the edge of a lot of different things. The radical elements of any religion can be emphasized."
Those fears were heightened this week as lawmakers debated the fate of detainees if President Barack Obama shutters the prison at Guantanamo Bay.
FBI Director Robert Mueller said terror suspects brought to the U.S. could end up "radicalizing others" or plan attacks on the country. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Obama would do nothing to endanger the public and decried "fear-mongering about this."
The four defendants in the New York terror case had been in and out of prison.
Laguerre Payen said he converted to Islam in prison, but a Muslim prayer leader who counseled him when he got out said he had a poor understanding of the faith. Onta Williams had registered as a Baptist in prison, but his uncle said he converted to Islam inside. David Williams and James Cromitie had registered as Muslim in
prison, according to correction officials.
Payen appears to be a Haitian citizen, while the three others are Americans. The Williamses are not related.
Mitch Silber, a top New York Police Department intelligence analyst, said inmates converting to Islam are so common that he and his colleagues call it "Prislam." Though many drop the faith once they are out, for some "the conversion sticks" and can fuel anger toward the United States, said Silber, co-author of the 2007 NYPD report "Radicalization in the West: The Homegrown Threat."
Just as young people can be radicalized by "cut-and-paste" readings of the Quran on the Internet, new inmates may get a distorted view of Islam from gang leaders or other influential inmates, according to "Out of the Shadows: Getting Ahead of Prison Radicalization," a 2006 report by the George Washington University Homeland Security Policy Institute and the University of Virginia Critical Incident Analysis Group.
Several imams used the term "Jailhouse Islam" to describe a form of Islam in prison that incorporates gang loyalty and violence, the report said.
Many states are doing a better job of screening the reading material that comes into prisons, Rogers said. But other problems arise when there are no qualified chaplains or volunteers.
"Sometimes inmates rely on other inmates, and it's sort of the prison way," Rogers said. "They turn to someone they trust, their 'celly' or someone in their cellblock, and put them on a pedestal as someone who has more knowledge about the religion. He could be spreading knowledge, or could be spreading ignorance."
Inmates who were radicalized in prison include:
- Jose Padilla, a former Chicago gang member, who converted to Islam behind bars and was recruited at a mosque to become a mujahedeen fighter, authorities said. Prosecutors accused him of plotting to detonate a radioactive "dirty bomb," but he was convicted of unrelated terror support charges.
- Richard Reid, a British citizen and follower of Osama bin Laden, who was a prison convert in England and became involved with militants after he was freed. He pleaded guilty in 2002 to trying to blow up a trans-Atlantic flight with explosives hidden in his shoes. He is now serving a life sentence at a maximum-security prison in Florence, Colo.
- A group of prisoners in California who converted to Islam and were arrested in 2005 on charges of plotting behind bars to attack military sites, synagogues and other targets.
Islam took hold in U.S. prisons in the 1940s, when members of the Nation of Islam were held for refusing to fight in World War II. Malcolm X was one of their most famous prison recruits.
The religion spread when Muslim inmates successfully sued for more freedom to practice their faith. Get-tough sentencing laws enacted in the 1980s filled prisons with large numbers of blacks and led to another spike in conversion. By this time, many blacks who once were in the Nation of Islam embraced mainstream Islam instead.
Associated Press Writers Michael Hill in Newburgh, N.Y., and Tom Hays in New York contributed to this story. Gorski reported from Denver and Zoll from New York.
