I won't lie, I knew America was a constintutional Republic, but really didn't know much about its differences with democracy.

Agreed, truly OUTSTANDING, and scary at the same time, anyone think the description of the fall of Rome sounded much like our current political environment? :(

FWIW - we are not a 'pure' democracy but a democratically constituted republic (which is what is taught in high school civics or government classes if the teacher is a good one and manages to keep the students awake, off their i-Phones, and participatory), we are not an empirical nation, and similarities in Historical events do not offer a guarantee of a repetition of results.
